अन्तर्धानं चामपात्रे दुग्धा पुण्यजनैर्विराट्। दोग्धा वैश्रवणस्तेषां वत्सश्चासीद्वृषध्वजः
The virtuous people milked disappearance in a golden vessel; Vaishravana was the milker, and Vrishadhvaja was the calf.
पुण्यगन्धान्पद्मपात्रे गन्धर्वाप्सरसोऽदुहन्। वत्सश्चित्ररथस्तेषां दोग्धा विश्वरुचिः प्रभुः
The Gandharvas and Apsaras milked fragrant essences in a lotus vessel; Chitraratha was their calf, and Vishvaruchi the lord was the milker.
स्वधां रजतपात्रेषु दुदुहुः पितरश्च ताम्। वत्सो वैवस्वतस्तेषां यमो दोग्धान्तकस्तदा
The ancestors milked the offering of Svadha in silver vessels; Vaivasvata was their calf, and Yama, called Antaka, was the milker.
एवं निकायैस्तैर्दुग्धा पयोऽभीष्टं हि सा विराट्। यैर्वर्तयन्ति ते ह्यद्य पात्रैर्वत्सैश्च नित्यशः
Thus, by these groups, the desired milk was drawn from Virat; those who live today continue to do so with vessels and calves, always.
यज्ञैश्च विविधैरिष्ट्वा पृथुर्वैन्यः प्रतापवान्। सन्तर्पयित्वा भूतानि सर्वैः कामैर्मनःप्रियैः
Having worshipped with various sacrifices, Prithu, son of Vena, mighty in splendor, satisfied all beings with desires pleasing to their hearts.
हैरण्यानकरोद्राजा ये केचित्पार्थिवा भुवि। तान्ब्राह्मणेभ्यः प्रायच्छदश्वमेधे महामखे
The king made golden images of all the earthly rulers; he gave them to the Brahmins at the great horse sacrifice.
स षष्टिं गोसहस्राणि षष्टिं नागशतानि च। सौवर्णानकरोद्राजा ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च तान्ददौ
That king made sixty thousand golden cows and sixty hundred golden elephants, and gave them to the Brahmins.
इमां च पृथिवीं सर्वां मणिरत्नविभूषिताम्। सौवर्णीमकरोद्राजा ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च तां ददौ
He made the entire earth, adorned with jewels and gems, into a golden form, and gave it to the Brahmins.
स चेन्ममार सृञ्जय चतुर्भद्रतरस्त्वया। पुत्रात्पुण्यतरस्तुभ्यं मा पुत्रमनुतप्यथाः। अयज्वानमदक्षिण्यमभि श्वैत्येत्युदाहरत्
If Sṛñjaya dies, O you who are more blessed than fourfold fortunate, your son is more virtuous than you; do not grieve for your son. They call one who does not sacrifice or give gifts 'white' (impure).
सहस्रं मुसलेनाहन्सहस्रमसिनाऽवधीत्। उद्बन्धनात्सहस्रं च सहस्रमुदके कृतम्
He killed a thousand with a mace, a thousand with a sword, a thousand by binding, and a thousand by drowning.
दन्तान्भङ्क्त्वा सहस्रस्य भिन्नकर्णांस्तथाऽकरोत्। ततः सप्तसहस्राणां कुटुधृपमपाययत्
He broke the teeth of a thousand, and made them with split ears; then he made seven thousand drink the poison of the club.
शिष्टान्वध्वा च हत्वा वै तेषां मृर्ध्नि विभिद्य च। गुणावतीमुत्तरेण खाण्डवाद्दक्षिणेन च। गिर्यन्ते शतसाहस्रा हैहयाः समरे हताः
Having slain the survivors and split their heads, to the north of Gunavati and south of Khandava, a hundred thousand Haihayas were killed in battle.
सरथाश्वगजा वीरा निहतास्तत्र शेरते। पितुर्वधामर्षितेन जामदग्न्येन धीमता
Heroes with chariots, horses, and elephants lay slain there, by the wise Jamadagni's son, angered by his father's death.
निजघ्ने दशसाहस्रान्रामः परशुना तदा। न ह्यमृष्यत ता वाचो यास्तैर्भृशमुदीरिताः
Rama then struck down ten thousand with his axe; he could not endure the harsh words spoken by them.
भृगौ रामाभिधावेति यदाक्रन्दन्द्विजोत्तमाः। ततः काश्मीरदरदान्कुन्तिक्षुद्रकमालवान्
When the best of Brahmins cried out, 'Bhargava, Rama is attacking!' he then struck the Kashmiras, Daradas, Kuntis, Shudrakas, and Malavas.
अङ्गवङ्गकलिङ्गांश्च विदेहांस्ताम्रलिप्तकान्। रक्षोवाहान्वीतिहोत्रांस्त्रिगर्तान्मार्तिकावतान्
He struck the Angas, Vangas, Kalingas, Videhas, Tamraliptakas, Rakshovahas, Vitihotras, Trigartas, and Martikavatas.
शिबीनन्यांश्च राजन्यान्देशान्देशान्सहस्रशः। निजघान शितैर्बाणैर्जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान्
The mighty son of Jamadagni struck down thousands of other royal warriors and kings of the Śibis in many lands with his sharp arrows.
कोटीशतसहस्राणि क्षत्रियाणां सहस्रशः। इन्द्रगोपकवर्णस्य बन्धुजीवनिभस्य च
Hundreds of millions of Kṣatriyas, countless in number, whose blood was the color of indragopa insects and bandhujīva flowers,
रुधिरस्य परीवाहैः पूरयित्वा सरांसि च। सर्वानष्टादश द्वीपान्वशमानीय भार्गवः
Bhārgava filled the lakes with streams of their blood, and, having brought all the eighteen islands under his control,
ईजे क्रतुशतैः पुण्यैः समाप्तवरदक्षिणैः। वेदीमष्टनलोत्सेधां सौवर्णां विधिनिर्मिताम्
He performed hundreds of sacred sacrifices, complete with the best gifts, upon a golden altar constructed according to the prescribed rites, eight measures high.
सर्वरत्नशतैः पूर्णां पताकाशतमालिनीम्। ग्राम्यारण्यैः पशुगणैः सम्पूर्णां च महीमिमाम्
He filled it with hundreds of all kinds of jewels, adorned it with hundreds of banners, and made this earth abundant with herds of domestic and wild animals.
रामस्य जामदग्न्यस्य प्रतिजग्राह कश्यपः। ततः शतसहस्राणि द्विपेन्द्रान्हेमभूषणान्
Kaśyapa accepted the earth from Rāma, son of Jamadagni, along with hundreds of thousands of lordly elephants adorned with golden ornaments.
निर्दस्युं पृथिवीं कृत्वा शिष्टेष्टजनसङ्कुलाम्। कश्यपाय ददौ रामो हयमेधे महामखे
Having made the earth free of outlaws and filled with virtuous and worthy people, Rāma gave it to Kaśyapa at the great horse sacrifice.
त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवीं कृत्वा निःक्षत्रियां प्रभुः। इष्ट्वा क्रतुशतैर्वीरो ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ह्यमन्यत
The lordly hero made the earth free of Kṣatriyas twenty-one times, performed hundreds of sacrifices, and then considered the Brāhmaṇas as his kin.
सप्तद्वीपां वसुमतीं मारीचोऽगृह्णत द्विजः। रामं प्रोवाच निर्गच्छ वसुधातो ममाज्ञया
The Brāhmaṇa Marīci took possession of the earth with her seven continents, and said to Rāma, 'Depart from the earth at my command.'
स कश्यपस्य वचनात्प्रोत्सार्य सरिताम्पतिम्। इषुपाते युधां श्रेष्ठः कुर्वन्ब्राह्मणशासनम्
Obeying Kaśyapa's words, the best of warriors, upholding the command of the Brāhmaṇas, withdrew the lord of rivers and departed.
अध्यावसद्गिरिश्रेष्ठं महेन्द्रं पर्वतोत्तमम्। एवं गुणशतैर्युक्तो भृगूणां कीर्तिवर्धनः
He dwelt upon the greatest of mountains, Mahendra, chief among peaks, thus increasing the fame of the Bhṛgu lineage with his hundreds of virtues.
जामदग्न्यो ह्यतियशा मरिष्यति महाद्युतिः। त्वया चतुर्भद्रतरः पुण्यात्पुण्यतरस्तव
Jāmadagnya, of great splendor and exceeding fame, will die; but you, Sṛñjaya, are even more blessed, your merit surpassing his.
अयज्वानमदक्षिण्यं मा पुत्रमनुतप्यथाः। एते चतुर्भद्रतरास्त्वया भद्रशताधिकाः। मृता नरवरश्रेष्ठ मरिष्यन्ति च सृञ्जय
Do not grieve for a son who did not sacrifice or give gifts; these, and those even more blessed than these, O best of men, have died and will die, O Sṛñjaya.
रूपं चाप्रतिमं तस्य त्रिदशैश्चापि दुर्लभम्। अपश्यतो हि वीरस्य का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे
His form is incomparable, rare even among the gods; how can my heart find peace, having seen such a hero?
