दुहितृत्वं च मे गच्छ एवमेतन्महाशरम्। नियच्छेयं त्वदर्थाय उद्यतं घोरदर्शनम्
Assume the role of my daughter, and in this way, O great arrow, I shall restrain for your sake this terrible and fearsome weapon that has been raised.
सर्वमेतन्महाराज विधास्यासि परन्तप। वत्सं त्वं पश्य राजन्वै क्षरेयं येन वत्सला
O great king, scorcher of foes, you will accomplish all this; see, O king, the calf by whom the cow is milked.
समां तु कुरु सर्वज्ञ मां तु धर्मभृतां वर। यथा विष्यन्दमानं वै क्षीरं सर्वत्र भावये
Make me equal, O knower of all, O best among upholders of righteousness; just as milk flows everywhere, so may I be made to pervade.
तत उत्सारयामास शिलाजालानि सर्वशः। पृथुर्वैन्यस्तदा राजा तेन शैला विवर्धिताः
Then King Prithu, son of Vena, cleared away all the rocky barriers; thus, by him, the mountains were increased.
न हि पूर्वनिसर्गे वै विषमे वसुधातले। प्रविभागः पुराणां वा ग्रामाणां वा महीपते
For, in the former creation, O king, there was no division of ancient lands or villages upon the uneven surface of the earth.
न सस्यानि न गोरक्ष्यं न कृषिर्न वणिक्पथः। वैन्यात्प्रभृति राजेन्दर सर्वस्यैतस्य सम्भवः
There were no crops, no cattle to tend, no agriculture, nor trade routes; from the time of Vainya, O king, all these came into being.
यत्रयत्र च साम्यं तु भूमावासीत्किलानघ। तत्रतत्र प्रजास्तात निवासमभिरोचयन्। कृच्छ्रेण च महाराज इत्येवमनुशुश्रुम
Wherever there was level ground on the earth, O sinless one, there the people, O dear one, chose to dwell; but with great difficulty, O king, so we have heard.
तथेत्युक्त्वा पुनर्वैन्यो गृहीत्वाऽऽजगवं धनुः। शरांश्चाप्रतिमान्घोरांश्चिन्तयित्वाऽब्रवीन्महीम्
Having said 'so be it,' Vainya again took up his resounding bow and, after contemplating terrible and unmatched arrows, addressed the earth.
एह्येहि वसुधे क्षिप्रं क्षरैभ्यः काङ्क्षितं पयः। मच्छसनातिगां वै त्वां प्रमथिष्याम्यहं शरैः
Come, come quickly, O Earth, yield the desired milk from your streams; if you do not obey my command, I will shatter you with arrows.
तथोक्ता साऽत्मनः श्रेयश्चिन्तयित्वाऽब्रवीत्पृथुम्
Thus addressed, she, considering her own welfare, spoke to Prithu.
ततो दास्याम्यहं भद्र सर्वं यस्य यथेप्सितम्। दुहितृत्वे च मां वीर सङ्कल्पयितुमर्हसि
Then I shall give, O fortunate one, whatever each desires; and, O hero, you should consider me as your daughter.
तथेत्युक्त्वा पृथुः सर्वं विधानमकरोद्वशी। ततो भूतनिकायास्तां वसुधां दुदुहुस्तदा
Having said 'so be it,' Prithu, the sovereign, made all the arrangements; then the hosts of beings milked the earth.
तां वनस्पतयः पूर्वं समुत्तस्थुर्दुधुक्षवः। साऽतिष्ठद्वत्सला वत्सं दोग्धृपात्राणि चेच्छती
First, the trees arose, wishing to milk her; she stood affectionately, desiring a calf and vessels for milking.
वत्सोऽभूत्पुष्पितः सालः प्लक्षो दोग्धाऽभवत्तदा। छिन्नप्ररोहणं दुग्धं पात्रमौदुम्बरं शुभम्
A blossoming sal tree became the calf, the plaksha tree was the milker; the sap from cut shoots was the milk, and the vessel was a beautiful fig-wood bowl.
उदयः पर्वतो वत्सो मेरुर्दोग्धा महागिरिः। रत्नान्योषधयो दुग्धं पात्रमस्तमयं तथा

In a gourd vessel, poison was milked from the earth; Dhritarashtra was the milker, and Takshaka was the calf.
सप्तर्षिभिर्ब्रह्म दुग्धा तथा चाक्लिष्टकर्मभिः। दोग्धा बृहस्पतिः पात्रं छन्दो वत्सश्च सोमराट्
The seven sages, pure in action, milked Brahma; Brihaspati was the milker, the vessel was the meter, and the king Soma was the calf.
अन्तर्धानं चामपात्रे दुग्धा पुण्यजनैर्विराट्। दोग्धा वैश्रवणस्तेषां वत्सश्चासीद्वृषध्वजः
The virtuous people milked disappearance in a golden vessel; Vaishravana was the milker, and Vrishadhvaja was the calf.

The Gandharvas and Apsaras milked fragrant essences in a lotus vessel; Chitraratha was their calf, and Vishvaruchi the lord was the milker.
स्वधां रजतपात्रेषु दुदुहुः पितरश्च ताम्। वत्सो वैवस्वतस्तेषां यमो दोग्धान्तकस्तदा
The ancestors milked the offering of Svadha in silver vessels; Vaivasvata was their calf, and Yama, called Antaka, was the milker.
एवं निकायैस्तैर्दुग्धा पयोऽभीष्टं हि सा विराट्। यैर्वर्तयन्ति ते ह्यद्य पात्रैर्वत्सैश्च नित्यशः
Thus, by these groups, the desired milk was drawn from Virat; those who live today continue to do so with vessels and calves, always.
यज्ञैश्च विविधैरिष्ट्वा पृथुर्वैन्यः प्रतापवान्। सन्तर्पयित्वा भूतानि सर्वैः कामैर्मनःप्रियैः
Having worshipped with various sacrifices, Prithu, son of Vena, mighty in splendor, satisfied all beings with desires pleasing to their hearts.
हैरण्यानकरोद्राजा ये केचित्पार्थिवा भुवि। तान्ब्राह्मणेभ्यः प्रायच्छदश्वमेधे महामखे
The king made golden images of all the earthly rulers; he gave them to the Brahmins at the great horse sacrifice.
स षष्टिं गोसहस्राणि षष्टिं नागशतानि च। सौवर्णानकरोद्राजा ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च तान्ददौ
That king made sixty thousand golden cows and sixty hundred golden elephants, and gave them to the Brahmins.
इमां च पृथिवीं सर्वां मणिरत्नविभूषिताम्। सौवर्णीमकरोद्राजा ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च तां ददौ
He made the entire earth, adorned with jewels and gems, into a golden form, and gave it to the Brahmins.
स चेन्ममार सृञ्जय चतुर्भद्रतरस्त्वया। पुत्रात्पुण्यतरस्तुभ्यं मा पुत्रमनुतप्यथाः। अयज्वानमदक्षिण्यमभि श्वैत्येत्युदाहरत्
If Sṛñjaya dies, O you who are more blessed than fourfold fortunate, your son is more virtuous than you; do not grieve for your son. They call one who does not sacrifice or give gifts 'white' (impure).
सहस्रं मुसलेनाहन्सहस्रमसिनाऽवधीत्। उद्बन्धनात्सहस्रं च सहस्रमुदके कृतम्
He killed a thousand with a mace, a thousand with a sword, a thousand by binding, and a thousand by drowning.
