ततो द्रोणोऽतिसंक्रुद्धो विसृजञ्शतशः शरान्। चेदिपाञ्चालपाण्डूनामकरोत्कदनं महत्
Then Drona, exceedingly enraged, released hundreds of arrows and wrought great destruction among the Cedis, Panchalas, and Pandavas.
तस्य ज्यातलनिर्घोषः शुश्रुवे दिक्षं मारिष। वज्रसंह्रादसङ्काशस्त्रासयन्मानवान्बहून्

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे जिष्णुर्जित्वा संशप्तकान्बहून्। अभ्ययात्तत्र यत्रासौ द्रोणः पाण्डून्प्रमर्दति

ताञ्शरौघान्महावर्ताञ्शोणितोदान्महाहदान्। तीर्णः संशप्तकान्हत्वा प्रत्यदृश्यत फल्गुनः
Having crossed those torrents of arrows, those great whirling floods of blood, after slaying the Samsaptakas, Phalguna was seen there.
तस्य कीर्तिमतो लक्ष्म सूर्यप्रतिमतेजसः। दीप्यमानमपश्याम तेजसा वानरध्वजम्
We beheld the banner of the monkey, blazing with the radiance of the illustrious Arjuna, whose splendor rivaled the sun.
संशप्तकसमुद्रं तमुच्छोष्यास्त्रगभस्तिभिः। स पाण्डवयुगान्तार्कः कुरूनप्यभ्यतीतपत्
Having dried up that ocean of Samsaptakas with the rays of his weapons, that Pandava, like the sun at the end of an age, scorched even the Kurus.
प्रददाह कुरून्सर्वानर्जुनः शस्त्रतेजसा। युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि धूमकेतुरिवोत्थितः
Arjuna burned all the Kurus with the brilliance of his weapons, like a comet arisen at the end of an age consuming all beings.
तेन बाणसहस्रौधैर्गजाश्वरथयोधिनः। ताड्यमानाः क्षितिं जग्मुर्मुक्तकेशाःशरार्दिताः
Struck by thousands of his arrows, elephants, horses, chariots, and warriors, their hair disheveled and pierced by shafts, fell to the earth.
केचिदार्तस्वनं चक्रुर्विनेशुरपरे पुनः। पार्थबाणहताः केचिन्निपेतुर्विगतासवः
Some uttered cries of pain, others fell silent; some, struck by Partha's arrows, dropped lifeless to the ground.
तेषामुत्पतितान्कांश्चित्पतितांश्च पराङ्मुखान्। न जघानार्जुनो योधान्योधव्रतमनुस्मरन्
Arjuna did not slay those warriors among them who had risen up or who had fallen and turned away, remembering the warrior's code.
ते विकीर्णरथाश्चित्राः प्रायशश्च पराङ्मुखः। कुरवः कर्णकर्णेति हाहेति च विचुक्रुशुः
Those Kurus, their chariots scattered and in disarray, most of them turning away, cried out, 'Karna! Karna!' and wailed in distress.
तमाधिरथिराक्रन्दं विज्ञाय शरणैषिणाम्। मा भैष्टेति प्रतिश्रुत्य ययावभिमुखोऽर्जुनम्
Hearing the cries of those seeking refuge, the son of Adhiratha reassured them, saying, 'Do not fear,' and advanced to face Arjuna.
स भारतरथश्रेष्ठः सर्वभारतहर्षणः। प्रादुश्चक्रे तदाग्नेयमस्त्रमस्त्रविदां वारः
That foremost of Bharata chariot-warriors, the delight of all the Bharatas, then unleashed the Agneya weapon, the best among those skilled in arms.
तस्य दीप्तशरौघस्य दीप्तचापधरस्य च। `वारुणेन तदस्त्रेण विधूयाथ धनञ्जयः'। शरौघाञ्शरजालेन विदुधाव धनञ्जयः
When that blazing shower of arrows was released by him, holding his shining bow, Dhananjaya dispelled it with the Varuna weapon, countering the torrent of arrows with a net of his own.
तथैवाधिरथिस्तस्य बाणाज्ज्वलिततेजसः। अस्त्रमस्त्रेण संवार्य प्राणदद्विसृजञ्शरान्
Likewise, Adhirathi, warding off his blazing arrows with a weapon of his own, released his shafts in return.
धृष्टद्युम्नश्च भीमश्च सात्यकिश्च महारथः। विव्यधुः कर्णमासाद्य त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरजिह्मगैः
Dhritadyumna, Bhima, and the great chariot-warrior Satyaki, having approached Karna, struck him each with three straight-flying arrows.
अर्जुनास्त्रं तु राधेयः संवार्य शरवृष्टिभिः। तेषां त्रयाणां चापानि चिच्छेद विशिखैस्त्रिभिः
But Radheya, countering Arjuna's weapon with a shower of arrows, cut down the bows of those three with three keen shafts.
ते निकृत्तायुघाः शूरा निर्विषा भुजगा इव। रथशक्तीः समुत्क्षिप्य भृशं सिंहा इवानदन्
Those heroes, their bows cut down, like venomless serpents, seized their chariot-lances and roared fiercely like lions.
ता भुजाग्रैर्महावेगा निसृष्टा भुजगोपमाः। दीप्यमाना महाशक्त्यो जग्मुराधिरथिं प्रति
Those great lances, hurled with force from their hands and resembling serpents, blazed as they sped toward Adhirathi.
ता निकृत्य शरव्रातैस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरजिह्मगैः। ननाद बलवान्कर्णः पार्थाय विसृजञ्शरान्
Karna, powerful, cut down those lances with showers of arrows, three by three, and roared as he released his shafts at Partha.
अर्जुनश्चापि राधेयं विद्ध्वा सप्तभिराशुगैः। कर्णादवरजं बाणैर्जघान निशितैः शरैः
Arjuna struck Radheya with seven swift arrows, and with sharp shafts he slew Karna’s younger brother.
ततः शत्रुंजयं हत्वा पार्थः षङ्भिरजिह्मगैः। जहार सद्यो भल्लेन विपाटस्य शिरो रथात्
Then, having killed Shatrunjaya with six straight-flying arrows, Partha immediately severed Vipata’s head from his chariot with a broad-headed shaft.
पश्यतां धार्तराष्ट्राणामेकेनैव किरीटिना। प्रमुखे सूतपुत्रस्य सोदर्या निहतास्त्रयः
As the sons of Dhritarashtra looked on, the diademed one, with a single attack, slew three brothers in front of Karna, the son of the charioteer.
ततो भीमः समुत्पत्य स्वरथाद्वैनतेयवत्। वरासिना कर्णपक्षाञ्जधान दश पञ्च च
Then Bhima, leaping from his own chariot like Garuda, struck down fifteen of Karna’s supporters with his excellent sword.
पुनस्तु रथमास्थाय धनुरादाय चापरम्। विव्याध दशभिः कर्णं सूतमश्वांश्च पञ्चभिः
Mounting his chariot again and taking up another bow, he pierced Karna with ten arrows, the charioteer with five, and the horses as well.
धृष्टद्युम्नोऽप्यसिवरं चर्म चादाय भास्वरम्। जघान चन्द्रवर्माणं बृहत्क्षत्रं च नैषधम्
Dhrishtadyumna too, taking up his excellent sword and shining shield, struck down Chandravarman and Brihatkshatra, the prince of the Nishadas.
ततः स्वरथमास्थाय पाञ्चाल्योऽन्यच्च कार्मुकम्। आदाय कर्णं विव्याध त्रिसप्तत्या नदन्रणे
Then the Panchala prince, mounting his chariot and taking another bow, wounded Karna with seventy-one arrows, roaring in the battle.
शैनेयोऽप्यन्यदादाय धनुरिन्दुसमद्युतिः। सूतपुत्रं चतुःषष्ट्या विद्ध्वा सिंह इवानदत्
Satyaki, radiant as the moon, took up another bow and, like a lion, roared as he struck the son of the charioteer with sixty-four arrows.
भल्लाभ्यां साधु मुक्ताभ्यां छित्त्वा कर्णस्य कार्मुकम्। पुनः कर्णं त्रिभिर्बाणैर्बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत्
With two well-aimed, broad-headed arrows, he cut down Karna’s bow, and then struck Karna three times on the arms and chest with arrows.
ततो दुर्योधनो द्रोणो राजा चैव जयद्रथः। निम़ज्जमानं राधेयमुज्जह्रुः सात्यकार्णवात्
Then Duryodhana, Drona, and King Jayadratha rescued Radheya, who was sinking under Satyaki’s assault.
