स तु लब्ध्वान्तरं नागस्त्वरितो रथमण्डलात्। निष्पतन्सततं सर्वान्परिचिक्षेप पार्थिवान्
The elephant, finding an opening, swiftly broke out from the circle of chariots and continually scattered all the kings.
ते त्वाशुगतिना तेन त्रास्यमाना नरर्षभाः। तमेकं द्विरदं सङ्ख्ये मेनिरे शतशो द्विपान्
Those bull-like men, terrified by its speed, thought that single elephant in battle to be a hundred elephants.
ते गजस्थेन काल्यन्ते भगदत्तेन पार्थिवाः। ऐरावतस्थेन यथा देवराजेन दानवाः
Those kings are being struck down by Bhagadatta, mounted on his elephant, just as the Daityas were by the lord of the gods riding Airavata.
तेषां प्रद्रवतां भीमः पाञ्चालानामितस्ततः। गजवाजिकृतः शब्दः सुमहान्समजायत

तस्याभिद्रवतो वाहान्हस्तमुक्तेन वारिणा। सिक्त्वा व्यत्रासयन्नागस्ते पार्थसहरंस्ततः
As he charged, the elephant, spraying water from its trunk, terrified the horses of the Pandava army.
ततस्तमभ्ययात्तूर्णं रुचिपर्वा कृतीसुतः। समघ्नञ्छरवर्षेण रथस्योऽन्तकसन्निभः
Then, the valiant son of Kritavarma, Ruciparvan, swiftly approached and struck the enemy's chariot, resembling Death, with a shower of arrows.
ततः स रुचिपर्वाणं शरेणानतपर्वणा। सुपर्वा पर्वतपतिर्निन्ये वैवस्वतक्षयम्
Then Suparvan, lord of the mountains, with an arrow whose joints were unbroken, sent Ruciparvan to the abode of Yama.

When that hero fell, Saubhadra, the son of Draupadi, Cekitana, Dhrishtaketu, and Yuyutsu attacked the elephant.
त एनं शरधाराभिर्धाराभिरिव तोयदाः। सिषिचुर्भैरवान्नादान्विनदन्तो जिघांसवः
They drenched him with streams of arrows, like clouds pouring down, roaring fiercely as they sought to slay him.
ततः पार्ष्ण्यङ्कुशाङ्गुष्ठैः कृतिना चोदितो द्विपः। प्रसारितकरः प्रायात्स्तब्धकर्णेक्षणो द्रुतम्
Then, urged on by the skilled driver with goad and heel and thumb, the elephant, with outstretched trunk and rigid ears and eyes, quickly advanced.
सोऽधिष्ठाय पदा वाहान्युयुत्सोः सूतमारुजत्। युयुत्सुस्तु रथाद्राजन्नपाक्रामत्त्वरान्वितः

पुत्रस्तु तव सम्भ्रान्तः सौभद्रस्याप्लुतो रथम्। स कुञ्जरस्थो विसृजन्निषूनरिषु पार्थिवः। बभौ रश्मीनिवादित्यो भुवनेषु समुत्सृजन्
Your son, alarmed, leapt onto Saubhadra's chariot; and, standing on the elephant, the king released arrows at the enemy, shining like the sun casting its rays upon the worlds.
तमार्जुनिर्द्वादशभिर्युयुत्सुर्दशभिः शरैः। त्रिभिस्त्रिभिर्द्रौपदेया धृष्टकेतुश्च विव्यधुः
Arjuna struck him with twelve arrows, Yuyutsu with ten, the sons of Draupadi with three each, and Dhrishtaketu also pierced him.
चेकितानः चतुःषष्ट्या सोत्तरायुधिकं पुनः। प्रत्यविध्यत्ततः सर्वान्भगदत्तस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिः
Cekitana struck him again with sixty-four arrows, each with a sharp head; then Bhagadatta struck them all back with three arrows each.
सोऽतियत्नार्पितैर्बाणैराचितो द्विरदो बभौ। संस्यूत इव सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिर्जलदो महान्
That elephant, covered with arrows shot with utmost effort, shone like a great cloud woven with the rays of the sun.
नियन्तुः शिल्पयत्नाभ्यां प्रेरितोऽरिशरार्दितः। परिचिक्षेप तान्नागः स रिपून्सव्यदक्षिणम्
Driven by the skill and effort of its driver, and tormented by enemy arrows, the elephant attacked those foes to its left and right.
गोपाल इव दण्डेन यथा पशुगणान्वने। सङ्कालयति तां सेनां भगदत्तस्तथा मुहुः
Just as a cowherd with a stick gathers his herd in the forest, so Bhagadatta repeatedly drove together that army.
क्षिप्रं श्येनाभिप्रन्नानां वायसानामिव स्वनः। बभूव पाण्डवेयानां भृशं विद्रवतां स्वनः
The sound of the fleeing Pandavas was like the loud cry of crows attacked by a swift hawk.
स नागराजः प्रवराङ्कुशाहतः पुरा सपक्षोऽद्रिवरो यथा नृप। भयं तदा रिपुषु समादधद्भृशं वणिग्जनानां क्षुभितो यथाऽर्णवः
That king of elephants, struck by the foremost goad, was like a great mountain with wings in ancient times, O king; at that moment, he inspired great fear among the enemies, like the agitated ocean among merchants.
ततो ध्वनिर्द्विरदरथाश्वपार्थिवै र्भयाद्रवद्भिर्जनितोऽतिभैरवः। क्षितिं वियद् द्यां विदिशो दिशस्तथा समावृणोत्पार्थिवसंयुगे ततः
Then, a most terrifying sound arose from the elephants, chariots, horses, and kings, who were fleeing in fear; that tumult filled the earth, the sky, the heavens, the intermediate regions, and all directions during the kings' battle.
स तेन नागप्रवरेण पार्थिवो भृशं जगाहे द्विषतामनीकिनीम्। पुरा सुगुप्तां विबुधैरिवाहवे विरोचनो देववरूतिनीमिव
With that foremost elephant, the king forcefully penetrated the enemy ranks, just as Virocana once attacked the well-guarded army of the gods in battle.
भृशं ववौ ज्वलनसखो वियद्रजः समावृणोन्मुहुरपि चैव सैनिकान्। तमेकनागं गणशो यथा गजान् समन्ततो द्रुतमथ मेनिरे जनाः
A strong wind, the friend of fire, blew up dust from the sky, repeatedly covering the soldiers; and the people thought that single elephant, rushing everywhere, was like a herd of elephants.
क्षोभयन्तं तदा सेनां द्विरदं नलिनीमिव। धनञ्जयं भूतगणाः साधुसाध्वित्यपूजयन्
As Dhananjaya disturbed the army like an elephant a lotus pond, the hosts of spirits praised him, exclaiming 'Well done! Well done!'
दृष्ट्वा तत्कर्म पार्थस्य वासवस्येव माधवः। विस्मयं परमं गत्वा प्राञ्जलिस्तमुवाच ह
Seeing that deed of Partha, Madhava was filled with the utmost wonder, as if it were Indra's own, and with joined palms he spoke to him.
कर्मैतत्पार्थ शक्रेण यमेन धनदेन च। दुष्करं समरे यत्ते कृतमद्येति मे मतिः
O Partha, this act you have performed today in battle seems to me as difficult as those accomplished by Indra, Yama, or Kubera.
युगपच्चैव सङ्ग्रामे शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। पतिता एव मे दृष्टाः संशप्तकमहारथाः
In this very battle, I have seen hundreds and thousands of great chariot-warriors among the Saṃśaptakas fall at once.
संशप्तकांस्ततो हत्वा भूयिष्ठा ये व्यवस्थिताः। भगदत्ताय याहीति कृष्णं पार्थोऽभ्यनोदयत्
Having slain the Saṃśaptakas, those who still remained, Partha urged Krishna onward, saying, 'Now, let us go to Bhagadatta!'
यत्तदानामयज्जिष्णुर्भरतानामपापिनाम्। धनुः क्षेमकरं सङ्ख्ये द्विषतामश्रुवर्धनम्
That bow which Jishnu wielded then for the sinless Bharatas, bringing safety in battle and causing tears among the enemies—
