सौमदत्तिस्तु राजानं मणिमन्तमतन्द्रितम्। पर्यवारयदायान्तं यशो द्रोणस्य वर्घयन्
King Saumadatti, undistracted, blocked the advancing King Manimat, seeking to enhance Drona’s fame.
स सौमदत्तेस्त्वरितश्चित्रेष्वसनकेतने। पुनः पताकां सूतं चच्छत्रं चापातयद्रथात्
Then, swiftly, in that striking contest, Saumadatti brought down the banner, the charioteer, and the parasol from Manimat’s chariot.
अथाप्लुत्य रथात्तूर्णं यूपकेतुरमित्रहा। साश्वसूतध्वजरथं तं चकर्त वरासिना
Then Yūpaketu, destroyer of foes, quickly leapt from his chariot and, with a fine sword, cut down that chariot along with its horses, driver, and banner.
रथं च स्वं समास्थाय धनुरादाय चापरम्। स्वयं यच्छन्हयान्राजन्व्यधमत्पाण्डवीं चमूम्
Mounting his own chariot and taking up another bow, he himself drove his horses, O King, and struck down the Pandava army.
पाण्ड्यमिन्द्रमिवायान्तमसुरान्प्रति दुर्जयम्। समर्थः सायकौघेन वृषसेनो न्यवारयत्
Vṛṣasena, capable and unassailable, checked the advancing Pāṇḍya, who was like Indra coming against the Asuras, with a torrent of arrows.
अथाजगाम हैडिम्बो महामायो महाबलः। पितॄणां हितमन्विच्छन्दहन्कौरववाहिनीम्
Then Haiḍimba, of great illusion and great strength, came seeking the welfare of his fathers, attacking the Kaurava army.
गदापरिघनिस्त्रिंशपट्टसायोघनोपलैः। कडङ्गरैर्भुशुण्डीभिः प्रासैस्तोमरसायकैः
With maces, iron clubs, swords, scimitars, heavy clubs, spiked maces, lances, javelins, and arrows,
मुसलैर्मुद्गरैश्चक्रैर्न्भिण्डिपालपरश्वथैः। पांसुवाताग्निसलिलैर्भस्मलोष्ठतृणद्रुमैः
With pestles, mallets, wheels, slings, axes, dust, wind, fire, water, ashes, clods, grass, and trees,
आतुदन्प्ररुजन्भञ्जन्निघ्नन्विद्रावयन्क्षिपन्। सेनां विभीषयन्नायाद्दोणप्रेप्सुर्घटोत्कचः
Striking, wounding, breaking, killing, routing, and hurling, terrifying the army, Ghaṭotkaca advanced, seeking Drona.
तं तु नानाप्रहरणैर्नानायुद्धविशेषणैः। राक्षसं राक्षसः क्रुद्धः समाजघ्ने ह्यलम्बुसः
Then Alambusa, the Rakshasa, enraged, attacked that Rakshasa with various weapons and diverse modes of combat.
तयोस्तदभवद्युद्धं रक्षोग्रामणिमुख्ययोः। तादृग्यादृक्पुरावृत्तं शम्बरामरराजयोः
There arose a battle between those two foremost leaders of the Rakshasas, like that which once took place between Shambara and the king of the gods.
एवं द्वन्द्वशतान्यासन्रथवारणवाजिनाम्। पदातीनां च भद्रं ते तव तेषां च सङ्कुले
Thus, hundreds of duels occurred among chariots, elephants, horses, and foot soldiers, both among your men and theirs, O blessed one, in that tumult.
नैतादृशो दृष्टपूर्वः सङ्ग्रामो नैव च श्रुतः। द्रोणस्याभावभावे तु प्रसक्तानां परस्परम्
Never before had such a battle been seen or heard of, as when, in Drona’s presence or absence, they fiercely engaged one another.
इदं घोरमिदं चित्रमिदं रौद्रमिति प्रभो। तत्र युद्धान्यदृश्यन्त प्रततानि बहूनि च
There, O lord, many battles were seen, spread out and manifold—some dreadful, some wondrous, some terrible.
तेन नागेन सन्त्रस्ता पाण्डवानामनीकिनी। सहसाऽभ्यद्रवद्राजन्यत्र तस्यौ वृकोदरः
By that elephant, the Pandava army was thrown into panic; suddenly, Bhima rushed toward it.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा हतं मत्वा वृकोदरम्। भगदत्तं सपाञ्चाल्यः सर्वतः समवारयत्
Then King Yudhishthira, thinking Bhima had been slain, surrounded Bhagadatta on all sides with the Panchalas.
तं रथं रथिनां श्रेष्ठाः परिवार्य परन्तपाः। अवाकिरञ्शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः
The foremost of chariot-warriors, destroyers of foes, encircled that chariot and showered it with sharp arrows by the hundreds and thousands.
स विघातं पृषत्कानामङ्कुशेन समाहरन्। क्षणेन पाण्डुपाञ्जालान्व्यधमत्पर्वतेश्वरः
He struck down the flights of arrows with his goad, and in a moment, the lord of the mountains scattered the Pandavas and Panchalas.
तदद्भुतमपश्याम भगदत्तस्य संयुगे। तथा वृद्धस्य चरितं कुञ्जरेण विशाम्पते
We beheld a wonder in that battle: the deeds of Bhagadatta, aged as he was, performed with his elephant, O king of men.
ततो राजा दशार्णानां प्राग्ज्योतिषमुपाद्रवत्। तिर्यग्यातेन नागेन समदेनाशुगामिना
Then the king of the Dasharnas charged at Bhagadatta, riding his swift-moving, intoxicated elephant at an angle.
तयोर्युद्धं समभवन्नागयोर्भीमरूपयोः। सपक्षयोः पर्वतयोर्यथा सद्रुमयोः पुरा
A battle arose between those two elephants, both of terrifying form, like two winged mountains of old, covered with trees.
प्राग्ज्योतिषपतेर्नागः सन्निवृत्त्यापसृत्य च। पार्श्वे दशार्णाधिपतेर्भित्त्वा नागमपातयत्
The elephant of the lord of Pragjyotisha, by turning and retreating, struck the side of the Dasharna king's elephant and brought it down.
तोमरैः सूर्यरश्म्याभैर्भगदत्तोऽथ सप्तभिः। जघान द्विरदस्थं तं शत्रुं प्रचलितासनम्
Then Bhagadatta, with seven lances shining like sunbeams, struck his enemy seated on the elephant, causing him to lose his seat.
व्यवच्छिद्य तु राजानं भगदत्तं युधिष्ठिरः। रथानीकेन महता सर्वतः पर्यवारयत्
But Yudhishthira cut off Bhagadatta from the king, and with a great array of chariots, surrounded him on all sides.
स कुञ्जरस्थो रथिभिः शुशुभे सर्वतो वृतः। पर्वते वनमध्यस्थो ज्वलन्निव हुताशनः
He, mounted on his elephant and surrounded by chariot-warriors, shone like blazing fire in the midst of a forest on a mountain.
मण्डलं सर्वतः श्लिष्टं रथिनामुग्रधन्विनाम्। किरतां शरवर्षाणि स नागः पर्यवर्तत
That elephant, encircled on all sides by fierce bowmen forming a tight ring, turned about as they poured down showers of arrows.
ततः प्राग्ज्योतिषो राजा परिगृह्य महागजम्। प्रेषयामास सहसा युयुधानरथं प्रति
Then the king of Pragjyotisha, seizing his great elephant, suddenly drove it against Yuyudhana's chariot.
आपतन्तं च सम्प्रेक्ष्य नागं सात्वतपुङ्गवः। अविध्यत्पञ्चभिर्बाणैः शितैराशीविषोपमैः
And seeing the elephant charging, the foremost of the Satvatas pierced it with five sharp arrows, like venomous serpents.
शिनेः पौत्रस्य तु रथं परिगृह्य महाद्विपः। अभिचिक्षेप वेगेन युयुधानस्त्वपाक्रमत्
But the great elephant, seizing the chariot of Shini's grandson, hurled it with force, and Yuyudhana leapt away.
बृहतः सैन्धवानश्वान्समुत्थाप्यथ सारथिः। तस्थौ सात्यकिमासाद्य सम्प्लुतस्तं रथं प्रति
Then the charioteer, urging on the great Sindhu horses, reached Satyaki and, leaping, stood before that chariot.
