स लक्ष्मणस्येष्वसनं छित्त्वा लक्ष्म च भारत। लक्ष्मणे शरजालानि विसृजन्बह्वशोभत
Then, O Bharata, having cut Lakshmana's bow and his mark, he shone greatly as he released volleys of arrows at Lakshmana.
ततोऽभिमन्युः कर्माणि कुर्वन्तं चित्रयोधिनम्। आर्जुनिः कृतिनं शूरं लक्ष्मणं समयोधयत्
After that, Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna, a skilled and valiant warrior, engaged Lakshmana, who was performing great deeds in battle.
स सम्प्रहारस्तुमुलस्तयोरासीन्महात्मनोः। श्रोतॄणामीक्षितॄणां च भृशं प्रीतिविवर्धनः
That fierce encounter between those two great souls brought much joy to the listeners and onlookers.
विकर्णस्तु महाप्राज्ञो याज्ञसेनिं शिखण्डिनम्। पर्यवारयदायान्तं युवानं समरे युवा
Then Vikarna, highly wise and himself a youth, confronted the youthful Shikhandin, son of Yajnaseni, as he advanced in battle.
ततस्तमिषुजालेन याज्ञसेनिः समावृणोत्। विधूय तद्बाणजालं बभौ तव सुतो बली
Then Yajnaseni covered him with a network of arrows, but your powerful son, shaking off that shower, stood resplendent.
अङ्गदोऽभिमुखं वीरमुत्तमौजसमाहवे। द्रोणायाभिमुखं यान्तं शरौघेण न्यवारयत्
Angada, facing the valiant Uttamaujas in battle, checked him as he advanced toward Drona with a torrent of arrows.
स सम्प्रहारस्तुमुलस्तयोः पुरुषसिंहयोः। सैनिकानां च सर्वेषां तयोश्च प्रीतिवर्धनः
That fierce encounter between those two lion-like men increased the delight of all the soldiers and of the two themselves.
दुर्मुखस्तु महेष्वासो वीरं पुरुजितं बली। द्रोणायाभिमुखं यान्तं वत्सदन्तैरवारयत्
Durmukha, the mighty archer, checked the powerful Purujit, who was advancing toward Drona, with arrows tipped like calf's teeth.
स दुर्मुखं भ्रुवोर्मध्ये नाराचेनाभ्यताडयत्। तस्य तद्धि बभौ वक्त्रं सनालमिव पङ्कजम्
He struck Durmukha in the middle of the brows with a broad-headed arrow, and his face shone like a lotus with its stalk.
कर्णस्तु केकयान्भ्रातॄन्पञ्च लोहितकध्वजान्। द्रोणायाभिमुखं याताञ्शरवर्षैरवारयत्
Karna checked the five Kekaya brothers, bearers of red banners, as they advanced toward Drona, with a shower of arrows.
ते चैनं भृशसन्तप्ताः शरवर्षैरवाकिरन्। स च तांश्छादयामास शरजालैः पुनः पुनः
Greatly enraged, they covered him with a rain of arrows, and he, in turn, repeatedly enveloped them with volleys of arrows.
नैव कर्णो न ते पञ्च ददृशर्बाणसंवृताः। साश्वसूतध्वजरथाः परस्परशराचिताः

क्षेमधूर्तिबृहन्तौ तु भ्रातरौ सात्वतं युधि। द्रोणायाभिमुखं यान्तं शरैस्तीक्ष्णैस्ततक्षतुः
Kṣemadhurti and Bṛhanta, the two brothers, wounded Satyaki, who was advancing toward Drona, with sharp arrows in battle.
तयोस्तस्य च तद्युद्धमत्यद्भुतमिवाभवत्। सिंहस्य द्विपमुख्याभ्यां प्रभिन्नाभ्यां यथा वने
The battle between them and him was truly marvelous, like that of a lion with two powerful elephants, both maddened, in the forest.
राजानं तु तथाम्बष्ठमेकं युद्धाभिनन्दिनम्। चेदिराजः शरानस्यन्क्रुद्धो द्रोणादवारयत्
But the king of the Cedis, angered, checked with his arrows the king of the Ambasthas, who delighted in battle, as he was advancing against Drona.
ततोऽम्बष्ठोऽस्थिभेदिन्या निरभिद्यच्छलाकया। स त्यक्त्वा सशरं चापं रथाद्भूमिमुपागमत्
Then the Ambastha was struck by a bone-piercing shaft; abandoning his bow and arrows, he descended from his chariot to the ground.
वार्धक्षेमिं तु वार्ष्णेयं कृपः शारद्वतः शरैः। अक्षुद्रः क्षुद्रकैर्बाणैः क्रुद्धरूपमवारयत्
Kripa, son of Sharadvat, with his arrows, though not small himself, checked the Vrishni warrior Satyaki, who was advancing with fierce, though lesser, shafts.
युध्यन्तौ कृपवार्ष्णेयौ येऽपश्यंश्चित्रयोधिनौ। ते युद्धासक्तमनसो नान्यं बुबुधिरे क्रियाम्
Those who saw Kripa and Satyaki fighting, both skilled in wondrous combat, became so absorbed in the battle that they noticed nothing else.
सौमदत्तिस्तु राजानं मणिमन्तमतन्द्रितम्। पर्यवारयदायान्तं यशो द्रोणस्य वर्घयन्
King Saumadatti, undistracted, blocked the advancing King Manimat, seeking to enhance Drona’s fame.
स सौमदत्तेस्त्वरितश्चित्रेष्वसनकेतने। पुनः पताकां सूतं चच्छत्रं चापातयद्रथात्
Then, swiftly, in that striking contest, Saumadatti brought down the banner, the charioteer, and the parasol from Manimat’s chariot.
अथाप्लुत्य रथात्तूर्णं यूपकेतुरमित्रहा। साश्वसूतध्वजरथं तं चकर्त वरासिना
Then Yūpaketu, destroyer of foes, quickly leapt from his chariot and, with a fine sword, cut down that chariot along with its horses, driver, and banner.
रथं च स्वं समास्थाय धनुरादाय चापरम्। स्वयं यच्छन्हयान्राजन्व्यधमत्पाण्डवीं चमूम्
Mounting his own chariot and taking up another bow, he himself drove his horses, O King, and struck down the Pandava army.
पाण्ड्यमिन्द्रमिवायान्तमसुरान्प्रति दुर्जयम्। समर्थः सायकौघेन वृषसेनो न्यवारयत्
Vṛṣasena, capable and unassailable, checked the advancing Pāṇḍya, who was like Indra coming against the Asuras, with a torrent of arrows.
अथाजगाम हैडिम्बो महामायो महाबलः। पितॄणां हितमन्विच्छन्दहन्कौरववाहिनीम्
Then Haiḍimba, of great illusion and great strength, came seeking the welfare of his fathers, attacking the Kaurava army.

मुसलैर्मुद्गरैश्चक्रैर्न्भिण्डिपालपरश्वथैः। पांसुवाताग्निसलिलैर्भस्मलोष्ठतृणद्रुमैः
With pestles, mallets, wheels, slings, axes, dust, wind, fire, water, ashes, clods, grass, and trees,
आतुदन्प्ररुजन्भञ्जन्निघ्नन्विद्रावयन्क्षिपन्। सेनां विभीषयन्नायाद्दोणप्रेप्सुर्घटोत्कचः
Striking, wounding, breaking, killing, routing, and hurling, terrifying the army, Ghaṭotkaca advanced, seeking Drona.
तं तु नानाप्रहरणैर्नानायुद्धविशेषणैः। राक्षसं राक्षसः क्रुद्धः समाजघ्ने ह्यलम्बुसः
Then Alambusa, the Rakshasa, enraged, attacked that Rakshasa with various weapons and diverse modes of combat.
