तावकाश्च महाराज जयं लब्ध्वा महाहवे। पाण्डवेयान्रणे जघ्नुर्द्रवमाणान्समन्ततः
Your men, O great king, having gained victory in the great battle, struck down the fleeing sons of Pāṇḍu on all sides.
ते दानवा इवेन्द्रेण वध्यमाना महात्मना। पाञ्चालाः केकया मात्स्याः समकम्पन्त भारत
Like the Dānavas being slain by mighty Indra, the Pāñcālas, Kekayas, and Matsyas trembled, O Bhārata.
समनुप्राप्तकृच्छ्रोऽहं मोहं परममागतः। भीष्मद्रोणौ हतौ श्रुत्वा नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे
I have come into great distress and utter delusion; having heard that Bhīṣma and Droṇa are slain, I no longer wish to live.
यन्मां क्षत्ताऽब्रवीत्तात प्रपश्यन्पुत्रगृद्धिनम्। दुर्योधनेन तत्सर्वं प्राप्तं सूत मया सह
What Vidura told me, seeing my desire for my son, all that has now come to pass, O Sūta, through Duryodhana and myself.
नृशंसं तु परं तात त्यक्त्वा दुर्योधनं यदि। पुत्रशेषं चिकीर्षेयं कृत्स्नं न मरणं व्रजेत्
If, abandoning Duryodhana, I had sought to preserve the remnant of my sons, O dear one, I would not have come to such utter ruin.
यो हि धर्मं परित्यज्य भवत्यर्थपरो नरः। सोऽस्माच्च हीयते लोकात्क्षुद्रभावं च गच्छति
For the man who abandons righteousness for the sake of gain falls from both this world and the next, and comes to a base condition.
अद्य चाप्यस्य राष्ट्रस्य कृतोच्छेदस्य सञ्जय। अवशेषं न पश्यामि ककुदे मृदिते सति
Now, O Sañjaya, with the destruction of this kingdom, I see no remnant left, since the chief has been crushed.
कथं स्यादवशेषो हि धुर्ययोरभ्यतीतयोः। यौ नित्यमुपजीवामः क्षमिणौ पुरुषर्षभौ
How could there be any remnant when those two leaders, whom we always depended on, the patient bulls among men, have perished?
व्यक्तमेव च मे शंस यथा युद्धमवर्तत। केऽयुध्यन्के व्यपाकुर्वन्के क्षुद्राः प्राद्रवन्भयात्
Tell me clearly how the battle unfolded—who fought, who withdrew, and which cowards fled in fear.
धनुञ्जयं च मे शंस यद्यच्चक्रे रथर्षभः। तस्माद्भयं नो भूयिष्ठं भ्रातृव्याच्च वृकोदरात्
Tell me also of Dhanañjaya, the bull among charioteers—what did he do? For our greatest fear was from him and from Vṛkodara, our enemy.
यथाऽसीच्च निवृत्तेषु पाण्डवेयेषु सञ्जय। मम सैन्यावशेषस्य सन्निपातः सुदारुणः
O Sanjaya, when the sons of Pandu had withdrawn, how did the dreadful gathering of my remaining army take place?
कथं च वो मनस्तात निवृत्तेष्वभवत्तदा। मामकानां च ये शूराः के कांस्तत्र न्यवारयन्
And at that time, dear one, when they had withdrawn, how did your minds fare? Which of my warriors stood firm and who held them back there?
तं धर्मराजो बहुभिर्मर्मभिद्भिरवाकिरत्। मद्रेशस्तं चतुःषष्ट्या शरैर्विद्ध्वाऽनदद्भृशम्
Then the king of dharma showered him with many piercing arrows, and the king of Madra struck him with sixty-four shafts, roaring fiercely.
तस्य नानदतः केतुमुच्चकर्त च कार्मुकम्। क्षुराभ्यां पाण्डवो ज्येष्ठस्तत उच्चुक्रुशुर्जनाः
As he roared, the eldest Pandava cut down his banner and bow with two razor-sharp arrows, and then the warriors raised a great shout.
तथैव राजा बाह्लीको राजानं द्रुपदं शरैः। आद्रवन्तं सहानीकः सहानीकं न्यवारयत्
Likewise, King Bahlika checked King Drupada, who was advancing with his troops, by covering him with arrows.
तद्युद्धमभवद्धोरं वृद्धयोः सहसेनयोः। यथा महायूथपयोर्द्विपयोः सम्प्रभिन्नयोः
That battle between the two aged kings with their armies was fierce, like the clash of two mighty, enraged elephants leading their herds.
विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ विराटं मत्स्यमार्च्छताम्। सहसैन्यौ सहानीकं यथेन्द्राग्नी पुरा बलिम्
Vindya and Anuvindya of Avanti attacked Virata, king of the Matsyas, with their armies, just as Indra and Agni once attacked Bali.
तदुत्पिञ्जलकं युद्धमासीद्देवासुरोपमम्। मत्स्यानां केकयैः सार्धमभीताश्वरथद्विपम्
That tumultuous battle, with fearless horses, chariots, and elephants, between the Matsyas and the Kekayas, was like the conflict of gods and asuras.
नाकुलिं तु शतानीकं भूतकर्मा सभापतिः। अस्यन्तमिषुजालानि यान्तं द्रोणादवारयत्
Bhutakarman, the chief of the assembly, checked Shatanika, Nakula's son, who was hurling volleys of arrows and advancing toward Drona.
ततो नकुलदायादस्त्रिभिर्भल्लैः सुसंशितैः। चक्रे विबाहुशिरसं भूतकर्माणमाहवे
Then Nakula's descendant, with three well-aimed broad-headed arrows, struck down Bhutakarman's arms and head in the battle.
सुतसोमं तु विक्रान्तमायान्तं तं शरौघिणम्। द्रोणायाभिमुखं वीरं साल्वो बाणैरवारयत्
The valiant Salva checked Sutasoma, who was advancing with a shower of arrows toward Drona.
स तु भीमरथः साल्वमाशुगैरायसैः शितैः। षड्भिः साश्वनियन्तारमनयद्यमसादनम्
But Bhimaratha, with six swift and sharp iron arrows, sent Salva, along with his horses and charioteer, to the abode of Yama.
श्रुतकीर्तिं समायान्तं मयूरसदृशैर्हयैः। चित्रसेनो महाराज तव पौत्रं न्यवारयत्
Chitrasena, O great king, checked Shrutakirti, your grandson, as he advanced with horses like peacocks.
तमार्जुनिः शरैश्चक्रे पितृव्यं जर्झरच्छविम्। शरैश्च द्रौपदीपुत्रं चित्रसेनः समावृणोत्
Arjuna's son pierced Chitrasena, his uncle, with arrows, making his body ragged, and Chitrasena in turn covered the son of Draupadi with arrows.
किरन्तं शरजालानि प्रभिन्नमिव कुञ्जरम्। श्रुतकर्माणमायान्तं दौश्शासनिरवारयत्
Duhshasana's son checked Shrutakarman, who was advancing, scattering volleys of arrows like a maddened elephant.
तौ पौत्रौ तव दुर्धर्षौ परस्परवधैषिणौ। पितॄणामर्थसिद्ध्यर्थं चक्रतुर्युद्धमुत्तमम्
Those two, your unconquerable grandsons, each seeking the other's death, fought a splendid battle for the sake of their fathers' success.
तिष्ठन्तमग्रे तं दृष्ट्वा प्रतिविन्ध्यं महाहवे। द्रौणिर्मानं पितुः कुर्वन्मार्गणैः समवारयत्
Seeing Prativindhya standing at the front in the great battle, Drona's son, to uphold his father's honor, checked him with arrows.
तं क्रुद्धं प्रतिविव्याध प्रतिविन्ध्यः शितैः शरैः। सिंहलाङ्गूललक्ष्माणं पितुरर्थे व्यवस्थितम्
Prativindhya, enraged, struck Drona's son, who bore the mark of a lion's tail and stood for his father's cause, with sharp arrows.
प्रवपन्निव बीजानि बीजकाले कृषीवलः। द्रौणायनिर्द्रौपदेयं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत्
Just as a farmer sows seeds at the proper season, Drona's son showered the son of Draupadi with a rain of arrows.
यस्तु शूरतमो राजन्नुभयोः सेनयोर्मतः। तं पटच्चरहन्तारं लक्ष्मणः समवारयत्
O King, Lakshmana, the slayer of shields, checked him who was considered the bravest among both armies.
