Among those of immeasurable energy, their wrathful bodies were seen, like the best of winged serpents in the sky, eager for battle.
With Bhīma, Karṇa, Kṛpa, Droṇa, Drauṇi, Pārṣata, and Sātyaki, that region of battle shone like the rising of the sun and time.
Just as the sun rises after the dreadful destruction of creatures, so too did the rise of the heroes occur, O best among men.
Then there was a tumultuous battle, with mighty warriors striking each other down, like the gods fighting powerful demons.
After that, the army of Yudhishthira, with a roar like a stormy ocean, destroyed your forces, causing the great chariot-warriors to flee.
Seeing that force shattered and severely crushed by the enemy, Drona spoke: 'Enough of fleeing, O heroes!'
Bharadvaja's son was filled with anger and valor; he took up his bow from the quiver, tightened its string, and, holding his great bow and arrows, spoke to his charioteer.
Charioteer, drive to where the king stands, shining with his white umbrella, holding the royal insignia, the ruler of righteousness.
This Kaurava army is breaking apart in many places; I will steady it by confronting Yudhishthira in battle.
For, O child, neither the Pandavas nor the kings of Matsya and Panchala, nor all the Somakas together, can withstand me when I rain down weapons in battle.
Arjuna, by my grace, has mastered mighty weapons; but, O child, neither he, nor Bhima, nor Satyaki can stand against me.
By my favor, Arjuna has attained supreme skill in archery; only he knows my weapon, and so does Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Prishata.
This is not the time to protect life, O child, for those who seek victory; go forth, aiming for glory and triumph.
Thus urged, the charioteer carried Drona forward.
Then, with skillful handling and encouragement, he gladdened the horses, driving the radiant chariot with its banner.
The Karushas, Matsyas, Chedis, Satyvatas, Pandavas, and Panchalas together surrounded him.
Then the red-horsed, enraged, like a four-tusked elephant, entered the Pandava ranks and rushed toward Yudhishthira.
Yudhishthira struck him with sharp arrows tipped with vulture feathers; Drona broke his bow and swiftly approached him.
The prince, famed among the Panchalas, protected Yudhishthira from Drona's advance, like the shore holding back the lord of rivers.
Seeing Drona, the foremost of Brahmins, checked by the prince, there arose lion-like shouts and cries of 'Bravo, bravo!'
Then the prince, enraged, struck Drona in the chest with an arrow in the great battle, roaring again and again like a lion.
And the mighty prince, having restrained Drona in combat, stood firm, tireless, his hand skilled, showering thousands of arrows.
That heroic prince, devoted to noble vows, expert in mantras and weapons, protected by a circle, was fiercely attacked by the eminent Brahmin.
Having reached the center of the armies, moving in all directions, Bharadvaja, the foremost of Brahmins, became the protector of your forces.
He pierced Shikhandin with twelve arrows, Uttamaujas with twenty, Nakula with five, and Sahadeva with seven.
He struck Yudhishthira with twelve arrows, the sons of Draupadi each with three, Satyaki with five, and the Matsya king with ten arrows.
He agitated the warriors in battle, charging at the foremost, advancing with the desire to reach Kunti's son, Yudhishthira.
Then, O king, Yugandhara, enraged, resisted Bharadvaja, the great chariot-warrior, like the wind stirs the ocean.
Having struck Yudhishthira with arrows whose shafts were smooth, he felled Yugandhara from his chariot with broad-headed shafts.
Having conquered him, Bharadvaja, of great energy and mind, advanced, seeking to reach Kunti's son, Yudhishthira.
