ततस्तामेव शल्यस्य सौभद्रः परवीरहा। मुमोच भुजवीर्येण वैदूर्यविकृतां शिताम्
Then Saubhadra, destroyer of enemy heroes, hurled that very same sharp, cat's-eye-studded spear of Śalya with the strength of his arm.
सा तस्य रथमासाद्य निर्मुक्तभुजगोपमा। जघान सूतं शल्यस्य रथाच्चैनमपातयत्
That spear, like a released serpent, struck Śalya's chariot and killed his charioteer, knocking him from the chariot.
ततो विराटद्रुपदौ धृष्टकेतुर्युधिष्ठिरः। सात्यकिः केकया भीमो धृष्टद्युम्नशिखण्डिनौ
Then Virāṭa, Drupada, Dhṛṣṭaketu, Yudhiṣṭhira, Sātyaki, the Kekayas, Bhīma, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, and Śikhaṇḍin—
यमौ च द्रौपदेयाश्च साधुसाध्विति चुक्रुशुः। बाणशब्दाश्च विविधाः सिंहनादाश्च पुष्कलाः
The twins, the sons of Draupadī, all cried out, 'Well done! Well done!' and there arose many sounds of arrows and mighty lion-roars.
प्रादुरासन्हर्षयन्तः सौभद्रमपलायिनम्। तन्नामृष्यन्त पुत्रास्ते शत्रोर्विजयलक्षणम्
They appeared, rejoicing, as Saubhadra fled; your sons could not endure the mark of victory belonging to the enemy.
अथैनं सहसा सर्वे समन्तान्निशितैः शरैः। अभ्याकिरन्महाराज जलदा इव पर्वतम्
Then all of them suddenly showered sharp arrows from every side upon him, O King, like clouds upon a mountain.
तेषां च प्रियमन्विच्छन्सूतस्य च पराभवम्। आर्तायनिरमित्रघ्नः क्रुद्धः सौभद्रमभ्ययात्
Seeking what pleased them and the defeat of the charioteer, the enraged Amitraghnā, son of Ārtāyana, advanced toward Saubhadra.
तद्बलं सुमहद्दीर्णं त्वदीयं प्रेक्ष्य वीर्यवान्। दधारैको रणे पाण्डून्वृषसेनोऽस्त्रमायया
Seeing your vast and shattered force, the valiant Vṛṣasena alone held off the Pāṇḍavas in battle by means of his weapons and skill.
शरा दश दिशो मुक्ता वृषसेनेन संयुगे। विचेरुस्ते विनिर्भिद्य नरवाजिरथद्विपान्
Ten arrows released by Vṛṣasena in combat pierced through men, horses, chariots, and elephants, and roamed the directions.
तस्य दीप्ता महाबाणा विविश्चेरुः सहस्रशः। भानोरिव महाराज घर्मकाले मरीचयः
His blazing great arrows entered in thousands, O King, like sunbeams in the heat of summer.
तेनार्दिता महाराज रथिनः सादिनस्तथा। निपेतुरुर्व्यां सहसा वातभग्ना इव द्रुमाः
Struck by him, O King, the charioteers and horsemen suddenly fell to the earth like trees broken by the wind.
हयौघांश्च रथौघांश्च गजौघांश्च महारथः। अपातयद्रणे राजञ्शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः
That great chariot-warrior, in battle, brought down masses of horses, chariots, and elephants, O King, by the hundreds and thousands.
दृष्ट्वा तमेकं समरे विचरन्तमभीतवत्। सहिताः सर्वराजानः परिवव्रुः समन्ततः
Seeing him alone moving fearlessly in battle, all the kings together surrounded him from every side.
नाकुलिस्तु शतानीको वृषसेनं समभ्ययात्। विव्याध चैनं दशभिर्नाराचैर्मर्मभेदिभिः
Nakula, the commander of a hundred divisions, advanced against Vṛṣasena and struck him with ten arrows that pierced his vital points.
तस्य कर्णात्मजश्चापं छित्त्वा केतुमपातयत्। तं भ्रातरं परीप्सन्तो द्रौपदेयाः समभ्ययुः
The son of Karṇa, having cut Nakula's bow, brought down his banner; then, desiring to aid their brother, the sons of Draupadī rushed forward.
कर्णात्मजं शरव्रातैरदृश्यं चक्रुरञ्जसा। तान्नदन्तोऽभ्यधावन्त द्रोणपुत्रमुखा रथाः
With showers of arrows, they made Karṇa's son invisible; roaring, the chariot-warriors led by Droṇa's son charged at them.
छादयन्तो महाराज द्रौपदेयान्महारथान्। शरैर्नानाविधैस्तूर्णं पर्वताञ्जलदा इव
Covering the mighty sons of Draupadī with arrows of many kinds, swiftly, like clouds covering mountains, O King.
तान्पाण्डवाः प्रत्यगृह्णंस्त्वरिताः पुत्रगृद्धिनः। पाञ्चालाः केकया मत्स्याः सृञ्जयाश्चोद्यतायुधाः
The Pāṇḍavas, eager for their sons, received them quickly; the Pāñcālas, Kekayas, Matsyas, and Sṛñjayas, all with weapons raised.
तद्युद्धमभवद्धोरं सुमहद्रोमहर्षणम्। त्वदीयैः पाण्डुपुत्राणां देवानामिव दानवैः
That battle became fierce, immense, and hair-raising, between your men and the sons of Pāṇḍu, like gods and demons.
एवं युयुधिरे वीराः संरब्धाः कुरुपाण्डवाः। परस्परमुदीक्षन्तः परस्परकृतागसः
Thus the warriors, enraged, Kurus and Pāṇḍavas, fought, gazing at each other, each bearing offenses against the other.
तेषां ददृशिरे कोपाद्वपूम्ष्यमिततेजसाम्। युयुत्सूनामिवाकाशे पतत्त्रिवरभोगिनाम्
Among those of immeasurable energy, their wrathful bodies were seen, like the best of winged serpents in the sky, eager for battle.
भीमकर्णकृपद्रोणद्रौणिपार्षतसात्यकैः। बभासे स रणोद्देशः कालसूर्यैरिवोदितैः
With Bhīma, Karṇa, Kṛpa, Droṇa, Drauṇi, Pārṣata, and Sātyaki, that region of battle shone like the rising of the sun and time.
प्रजानां संक्षये घोरे यथा सूर्योदयो भवेत्। शूराणामुदयस्तद्वदासीत्पुरुषसत्तम
Just as the sun rises after the dreadful destruction of creatures, so too did the rise of the heroes occur, O best among men.
तदासीत्तुमुलं युद्धं निघ्नतामितरेतरम्। महाबलानां बलिभिर्दानवानां यथा सुरैः
Then there was a tumultuous battle, with mighty warriors striking each other down, like the gods fighting powerful demons.
ततो युधिष्ठिरानीकमुद्धूतार्णवनिःस्वनम्। त्वदीयमवधीत्सैन्यं संप्रद्रुतमहारथम्
After that, the army of Yudhishthira, with a roar like a stormy ocean, destroyed your forces, causing the great chariot-warriors to flee.
तत्प्रभग्नं बलं दृष्ट्वा शत्रुभिर्भृशमर्दितम्। अलं द्रुतेन वः शूरा इति द्रोणोऽभ्यभाषत
Seeing that force shattered and severely crushed by the enemy, Drona spoke: 'Enough of fleeing, O heroes!'
भारद्वाजममर्षश्च विक्रमश्च समाविशत्। समुद्धृत्य निषङ्गाच्च धनुर्ज्यामवमृज्य च। महाशरधनुष्पाणिर्यन्तारमिदमब्रवीत्
Bharadvaja's son was filled with anger and valor; he took up his bow from the quiver, tightened its string, and, holding his great bow and arrows, spoke to his charioteer.
सारथे याहि यत्रैष पाण्डरेण विराजता। ध्रियमाणेन च्छेण राजा तिष्ठति धर्मराट्
Charioteer, drive to where the king stands, shining with his white umbrella, holding the royal insignia, the ruler of righteousness.
तदेतद्दीर्यते सैन्यं धार्तराष्ट्रमनेकधा। एतत्संस्तम्भयिष्यामि प्रतिवार्य युधिष्ठिरम्
This Kaurava army is breaking apart in many places; I will steady it by confronting Yudhishthira in battle.
न हि मामभिवर्षन्तं संयुगे तात पाण्डवाः। मात्स्यपाञ्चालराजानः सर्वे च सहसोमकाः
For, O child, neither the Pandavas nor the kings of Matsya and Panchala, nor all the Somakas together, can withstand me when I rain down weapons in battle.
