भगदत्तस्तु राजानं द्रुपदं नतपर्वभिः। सनियन्तृध्वजरथं विव्याध पुरुषर्षभः
Bhagadatta, the best of men, struck King Drupada, along with his charioteer, banner, and chariot, with curved arrows.
द्रुपदस्तु ततः क्रुद्धो भगदत्तं महारथम्। आजघानोरसि क्षिप्रं शरेणानतपर्वणा
Then Drupada, enraged, swiftly struck the great chariot-warrior Bhagadatta on the chest with a straight-flying arrow.
युद्धं योधवरौ लोके सौमदत्तिशिखण्डिनौ। भूतानां त्रासजननं चक्रातेऽस्त्रविशारदौ
Saumadatti and Śikhaṇḍin, both masters of weapons, fought a battle that inspired terror among all beings.
भूरिश्रवा रणे राजन्याज्ञसेनिं महारथम्। महता सायकौघेन च्छादयामास वीर्यवान्
In battle, the valiant Bhūriśravā covered the great chariot-warrior Yājñaseni with a mighty torrent of arrows.
शिखण्डी तु ततः क्रुद्धः सौमदत्तिं विशाम्पते। नवत्या सायकानां तु कम्पयामास भारत
Then Śikhaṇḍin, enraged, shook Saumadatti with ninety arrows, O Bhārata.
राक्षसौ रौद्रकर्माणौ हेडिम्बालम्बुसावुभौ। चक्रातेऽत्युद्भुतं युद्धं परस्परजयैषिणौ
The two fierce Rākṣasas, Hidimba’s son and Alambusa, both eager for victory, fought an extraordinary duel.
मायाशतसृजौ दृप्तौ मायाभिरितरेतरम्। अन्तर्हितौ चेरतुस्तौ भृशं विस्मयकारिणौ
Proud and conjuring hundreds of illusions, they moved about, each hidden from the other, astonishing all who beheld them.
चेकितानोऽनुविन्देन युयुधे चातिभैरवम्। यथा देवासुरे युद्धे बलशक्रौ महाबलौ
Cekitāna fought Anuvinda in a most dreadful battle, like mighty Indra and Bali in the war between gods and demons.
लक्ष्मणः क्षत्रदेवेन विमर्दमकरोद्भृशम्। यथा विष्णुः पुरा राजन्हिरण्याक्षेण संयुगे
Lakshmana fiercely engaged in combat with the warrior king, just as Vishnu once did with Hiranyaksha in battle, O King.
ततः प्रचलिताश्वेन विधिवत्कल्पितेन च। रथेनाभ्यपतद्राजन्सौभद्रं पौरवो पौरवो नदन्
Then, with a properly yoked and moving horse, the Paurava, roaring, rushed toward Saubhadra in his chariot, O King.
ततोऽभ्ययात्स त्वरितो युद्धाकाङ्क्षी महाबलः। तेन चक्रे महद्युद्धमभिमन्युररिन्दमः
Thereafter, eager for battle and possessing great strength, he swiftly approached; Abhimanyu, destroyer of foes, fought a great battle with him.
पौरवस्त्वथ सौभद्रं शरव्रातैरवाकिरत्। तस्यार्जुनिर्ध्वजं छत्रं धनुश्चोर्व्यामपातयत्
Then the Paurava showered Saubhadra with volleys of arrows; Arjuna's son struck down his banner, umbrella, and bow to the ground.
सौभद्रः पौरवं त्वन्यैर्विद्ध्वा सप्तभिराशुगैः। पञ्चभिस्तस्य विव्याध हयान्सूनं च सायकैः
Saubhadra pierced the Paurava with seven swift arrows, and with five more struck his horses and his charioteer with shafts.
ततः प्रहर्षयन्सेनां सिंहवद्विनदन्मुहुः। समादत्तार्जुनिस्तूर्णं पौरवान्तकरं शरम्
Then, repeatedly roaring like a lion and delighting the army, Arjuna's son quickly took up a deadly arrow to destroy the Paurava.
तं तु सन्धितमाज्ञाय सायकं घोरदर्शनम्। द्वाभ्यां शराभ्यां हार्दिक्यश्चिच्छेद सशरं धनुः
Recognizing that terrible arrow, already fitted to the bow, Hardikya cut the bow and arrow with two shafts.
तदुत्सृज्य धनुश्छिन्नं सौभद्रः परवीरहा। उद्बबर्ह सितं खङ्गमाददनाः शरावरम्
Abandoning his broken bow, Saubhadra, slayer of enemy heroes, raised a shining sword and took up a splendid shield.
स तेनानेकतारेण चर्मणा कृतहस्तवत्। भ्रान्तासिना चरन्मार्गान्दर्शयन्वीर्यमात्मनः
With that many-strapped shield in hand, he moved about with his whirling sword, displaying the prowess of his own strength.
भ्रामितं पुनरुद्धान्तमाधूतं पुनरुत्थितम्। चर्मनिस्त्रिंशयो राजन्निर्विशेषमदृश्यत
The shield and sword, spinning, raised, and shaken, appeared indistinguishable, O King.
स पौरवरथस्येषामाप्लुत्य सहसा नदन्। पौरवं रथमास्थाय केशपक्षे परामृशत्
He suddenly leapt onto the Paurava's chariot, roaring, and, mounting the chariot, seized the Paurava by the hair.
जघानास्य पदा सूतमसिना पातयद्धृजम्। विक्षोभ्याम्भोनिधिं तार्क्ष्यस्तं नागमिव चाक्षिपत्
He struck the charioteer with his foot and felled him with his sword, and, like Garuda disturbing the ocean, hurled the Paurava from the chariot.
तमागलितकेशान्तं ददृशुः सर्वपार्थिवाः। उक्षाणमिव सिंहेन पात्यमानमचेतसम्
All the kings saw him with his hair disheveled, being thrown down unconscious, like a bull struck by a lion.
तमार्जुनिवशं प्राप्तं कृष्यमाणमनाथवत्। पौरवं पातितं दृष्ट्वा नामृष्यत जयद्रूथः
Seeing the Paurava, helpless and dragged under Arjuna's power, Jayadratha could not bear it.
स बर्हिबर्हावततं किङ्किणीशतजालवत्। चर्म चादाय खङ्गं च नदन्पर्यपतद्रथात्
Taking up a shield adorned with peacock feathers and a net of bells, and his sword, roaring, he leapt from his chariot.
ततः सैन्धवमालोक्य कार्ष्णिरुत्सृज्य पौरवम्। उत्पपात रथात्तूर्णं श्येनवन्निपपात च
Then, seeing the Sindhu king, Krishna's son abandoned the Paurava and quickly jumped from his chariot, swooping down like a hawk.
प्रासपट्टिशनिस्त्रिंशाञ्छत्रुभिः सम्प्रचोदितान्। चिच्छेद चासिना कार्ष्णिश्चर्मणा संरुरोध च
Krishna's son cut with his sword the spears, lances, and swords hurled by the enemy, and blocked them with his shield.
स दर्शयित्वा सैन्यानां स्वबाहुबलमात्मनः। तमुद्यम्य महाखङ्गं चर्म चाथ पुनर्बली

The two, armed with swords, tusks, and claws, met each other and fought fiercely, like a tiger and a lion, delighted in battle.
सम्पातेष्वभिघातेषु निपातेष्वसिचर्मणोः। न तयोरन्तरं कश्चिद्ददर्श नरसिंहयोः
As they struck, attacked, and battered each other's shields, no one could see any gap between those two lion-like men.
अवक्षेपोऽसिनिर्हादः शस्त्रान्तरनिदर्शनम्। बाह्यान्तरनिपातश्च निर्विशेमदृश्यत
The downward blows, the clashing of swords, the display of weapon-skills, and the strikes both outward and inward were seen clearly.
