सात्यकिं रभसं युद्धे द्रौणिर्ब्राह्मणपुङ्गवः । आजघानोरसि क्रुद्धो नाराचेन परंतपः
Drona's son, the foremost among Brahmins, struck Satyaki, who was fierce in battle, in the chest with a razor-sharp arrow, enraged and scorching his foe.
शैनेयोऽपि गुरोः पुत्रं सर्वमर्मसु भारत। अताडयदमेयात्मा नवभिः कङ्कपत्रिभिः
But Satyaki, of unconquerable spirit, struck the preceptor's son, O Bharata, in all his vital points with nine arrows tipped with vulture feathers.
अश्वत्थामा तु समरे सात्यकिं नवभिः शरैः । त्रिंशता च पुनस्तूर्णं बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत्
Ashvatthama, in that battle, pierced Satyaki with nine arrows, and then swiftly struck his arms and chest with thirty more.
सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासो द्रोणपुत्रेण सात्यकिः । द्रोणपुत्रं त्रिभिर्बाणैराजघान महायशाः
Satyaki, the mighty archer, though severely wounded by Drona's son, struck Drona's son in return with three arrows, his fame resounding.
पौरवो धृष्टकेतुं च शरैराच्छाद्य संयुगे । बहुधा दारयांचक्रे महेष्वासं महारथः
The Paurava, great chariot-warrior, covered Dhrishtaketu with arrows in the battle, and pierced the mighty archer in many ways.
तथैव पौरवं युद्धे धृष्टकेतुर्महारथः। त्रिंशता निशितैर्बाणैर्विव्याधाशु महाभुजः
Likewise, Dhrishtaketu, the great chariot-warrior with mighty arms, swiftly struck the Paurava in battle with thirty sharp arrows.
पौरवस्तु धनुश्छित्त्वा धृष्टकेतोर्महारथः । ननाद बलवन्नादं विव्याध च शितैः शरैः
But the Paurava, great chariot-warrior, cut down Dhrishtaketu's bow, roared loudly, and pierced him with sharp arrows.
सोऽन्यत्कार्मुकमादाय पौरवं निशितैः शरैः । आजघान महाराज त्रिसप्तत्या शिलीमुखैः
Taking up another bow, Dhrishtaketu struck the Paurava, O great king, with seventy-one keen-tipped shafts.
तौ तु तत्र महेष्वासौ महामात्रौ महारथौ । महता शरवर्षेण परस्परमवर्षताम्
Then those two mighty archers, great-souled and great chariot-warriors, showered each other with a great rain of arrows.
अन्योन्यस्य धनुश्छित्त्वा हयान्हत्वा च भारत। विरथावसियुद्धाय समीयतुरमर्षणौ
Having cut each other's bows and slain each other's horses, O Bharata, the two, filled with wrath, approached for a sword fight on foot.
आर्षभे चर्मणी चित्रे शतचन्द्रपुरस्कृते । तारकाशतचित्रे च निस्त्रिंशौ सुमहाप्रभौ
With splendid swords and beautiful shields adorned with a hundred moons and decorated with a hundred stars, both shone with great brilliance.
प्रगृह्य विमलौ राजंस्तावन्योन्यमभिद्रुतौ । वासितासंगमे यत्तौ सिंहाविव महावने
Grasping their spotless swords, O King, those two rushed at each other, intent on the contest, like lions in a great forest.
मण्डलानि विचित्राणि गतप्रत्यागतानि च। चेरतुर्दर्शयन्तौ च प्रार्थयन्तौ परस्परम्
They moved in intricate circles, advancing and retreating, displaying their skill and challenging each other.
पौरवो धृष्टकेतुं तु शङ्खदेशे महासिना । ताडयामास संक्रुद्धस्तिष्ठतिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्
The Paurava, enraged, struck Dhrishtaketu on the shoulder with his great sword, and shouted, 'Stand, stand!'
चेदिराजोऽपि समरे पौरवं पुरुषर्षभम् । आजघान शिताग्रेण जत्रुदेशे महासिना
The king of the Cedis, too, in battle, struck the Paurava, bull among men, on the collarbone with his sharp-edged sword.
तावन्योन्यं महाराज समासाद्य महाहवे । अन्योन्यवेगाभिहतौ निपेततुररिंदमौ
Those two subduers of foes, O King, meeting each other in that great battle, struck down by each other's force, fell to the ground.
ततः स्वरथमारोप्य पौरवं तनयस्तव । जयत्सेनो रथेनाजावपोवाह रणाजिरात्
Then your son Jayatsena, mounting the Paurava on his own chariot, swiftly carried him away from the field of battle.
धृष्टकेतु तु समरे माद्रीपुत्रः प्रतापवान् । अपोवाह रणे क्रुद्धः सहदेवः पराक्रमी
But Sahadeva, son of Madri and mighty in valor, angrily carried Dhrishtaketu away from the battle.
चित्रसेनः सुशर्माणं विद्ध्वा बहुभिरायसैः । पुनर्विव्याध तं षष्ट्या पुनश्च नवभि शरैः
Citraseṇa struck Suśarmā with many iron arrows, then pierced him again with sixty, and once more with nine arrows.
सुशर्मा तु रणे क्रुद्धस्तव पुत्रं विशांपते । दशमिर्दशभिश्चैव विव्याध निशितैः शरैः
But Suśarmā, enraged in battle, pierced your son, O lord of the people, with ten sharp arrows and then with another ten.
चित्रसेनश्च तं राजंस्त्रिंशता नतपर्वभिः । आजघान रमे क्रुद्धः स च तं प्रत्यविध्यत
Citraseṇa, furious, struck that king with thirty well-feathered arrows in the battle, and he struck back at him in return.
भीष्मस्य समरे राजन्यशो मानं च वर्धयन् । सौभद्रो राजपुत्रं तु बृहद्बलमयोधयत्
To increase Bhīṣma’s fame and honor among kings in battle, Saubhadra engaged the royal prince Bṛhadbala.
पार्थहेतोः पराक्रान्तो भीष्मस्य निधनं प्रति। आर्जुनिं कोसलेन्द्रस्तु विद्ध्वा पञ्चभिरायसैः
For Pārtha’s sake, striving for Bhīṣma’s death, the king of Kosala struck Arjuna’s son with five iron arrows.
पुनर्विव्याध विंशत्या शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः । सौभद्रः कोसलेन्द्रं तु विव्याधाष्टभिरायसैः
Then again he pierced him with twenty well-feathered arrows, but Saubhadra struck the king of Kosala with eight iron arrows.
नाकम्पयत संग्रामे विव्याध च पुनः शरैः । कौसल्यस्य धनुश्चापि पुनश्चिच्छेद फाल्गुनिः
He did not falter in battle and struck him again with arrows; and Phālguni’s son cut down the bow of the Kosalan once more.
आजघान शरैश्चापि त्रिंशता कङ्कपत्रिभिः । सोऽन्यत्कार्मुकमादाय राजपुत्रो बृहद्बलः
He struck him with thirty arrows tipped with peacock feathers; then the royal prince Bṛhadbala took up another bow.
फाल्गुनिं समरे क्रुद्धो विव्याध बहुभिः शरैः । तयोर्युद्धं समभवद्भीष्महेतोः परंतप
Enraged, he struck Phālguni’s son in battle with many arrows; and between them, scorcher of foes, a fierce fight arose for Bhīṣma’s sake.
संरब्धयोर्महाराज समरे चित्रयोधिनोः । यथा देवासुरे युद्धे बलिवासवयोरभूत्
O king, the two, both furious and skilled in battle, fought as fiercely as Bali and Indra once did in the war between gods and asuras.
भीमसेनो गजानीकं योधयन्बह्वशोभत । यथा शक्रो वज्रपाणिर्दारयन्पर्वतोत्तमान्
Bhīmasena, fighting the elephant division, shone greatly, like Śakra, wielder of the thunderbolt, cleaving mighty mountains.
ते वध्यमाना भीमेन मात्गा गिरिसन्निभाः । निपेतुरुर्व्यां सहिता नादयन्तो वसुधराम्
Those elephants, mountain-like, being struck down by Bhīma, fell to the earth together, shaking the ground with their crash.
