अपीडयेतां समरे त्रिगर्तानां महद्बलम् । सुशर्माणि रणे पार्थं शरैर्नवभिराशुगैः
Suśarman, with the great force of the Trigartas, pressed hard against Partha in battle, striking him with nine swift arrows.
ननाद बलवन्नादं त्रासयानो महद्बलम् । अन्ये च रथिनः शूरा भीमसेनधनञ्जयौ
He roared a mighty roar, terrifying the great army; and other heroic chariot-warriors attacked Bhimasena and Dhananjaya.
विव्यधुर्निशितैर्बाणै रुक्मपुङ्खैरजिह्मगैः । तेषां च रथिनां मध्ये कौन्तेयौ भरतर्षभौ
They struck with sharp, straight-flying arrows tipped with gold; and in the midst of those chariot-warriors, the sons of Kunti, bulls among men, stood firm.
क्रीडमानौ रथोदारौ चित्ररूपौ व्यदृश्यताम् । आमिषेप्सू गवां मध्ये सिंहाविव मदोत्कटौ
Those two, Arjuna and Bhima, appeared as if playing, standing tall on their chariots, resplendent in form, like two fierce lions among cattle seeking prey.
छित्त्वा धनूंषि शूराणां शरांश्च बहुधा रणे । पातयामासतुर्वीरौ शिरांसि शतशो नृणाम्
Cutting down the bows of the heroes and their arrows in many ways in battle, the two mighty warriors caused hundreds of men's heads to fall.
रथाश्च बहवो भग्ना हयाश्च शतशो हताः। गजाश्च सगजारोहाः पेतुरुर्व्यां महाहवे
Many chariots were shattered, hundreds of horses slain, and elephants with their riders fell to the earth in that great conflict.
रथिनः सादिनश्चापि तत्रतत्र निषूदिताः। दृश्यन्ते बहवो राजन्वेषमानाः समन्ततः
Chariot-warriors and horsemen were struck down here and there; many could be seen, O King, wandering all around in search of escape.
हतैर्गजपदात्योघैर्वाजिभिश्च निषूदितैः। रथैश्च बहुधा भग्नैः समास्तीर्यत मेदिनी
The earth was strewn with slain elephants, foot-soldiers, horses cut down, and many broken chariots.
छत्रैश्च बहुधा च्छिन्नैर्ध्वजैश्च विनिपातितैः । अङ्कुशैरपविद्धैश्च परिस्तोमैश्च भारत
It was covered with many broken umbrellas, fallen banners, discarded goads, and heaps of ornaments, O Bharata.
केयूरैरङ्गदैर्हारै राङ्कवैर्मृदितैस्तथा । उष्णीषैर्ऋष्टिभिश्चैव चामरव्यजनैरपि
With armlets, bracelets, necklaces, torn garments, turbans, spears, and yak-tail fans crushed and scattered as well.
तत्रतत्रापविद्धैश्च बाहुभिश्चन्दनोक्षितैः । ऊरुभिश्च नरेन्द्राणां समास्तीर्यत मेदिनी
Here and there, arms smeared with sandalwood and thighs of kings lay strewn, covering the earth.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम रणे पार्थस्य विक्रमम् । शरैः संवार्य तान्वीरान्यज्जघान महाबलः
There we witnessed a wondrous feat of Partha in battle: with his arrows, the mighty one covered those heroes and struck them down.
पुत्रस्तु तव तं दृष्ट्वा भीमार्जुनपराक्रमम् । गाङ्गेयस्य रथाभ्याशमुपजग्मे महाबलः
Your son, seeing the valor of Bhima and Arjuna, approached the chariot of Bhishma, the son of Ganga, with great force.
कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च सैन्धवश्च जयद्रथः । विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ नाजहुः संयुगं तदा
Kṛpa, Kṛtavarman, and Jayadratha the Sindhu king, along with Vindya and Anuvindya of Avanti, did not abandon the fight at that time.
ततो भीमो महेष्वासः फल्गुनश्च महारथः । कौरवाणां चमूं घोरां भृशं दुद्रुवतू रणे
Then Bhima, wielder of the great bow, and Phalguna, the mighty charioteer, fiercely drove back the dreadful Kaurava army in battle.
ततो बर्हिणवाजानामयुतान्यर्बुदानि च। धनञ्जयरथे तूर्णं पातयन्ति स्म भूमिपाः
Then, tens of thousands and hundreds of millions of peacock-crested arrows were swiftly shot by the kings at Dhananjaya's chariot.
ततस्तञ्शरजालेन सन्निवार्य महारथान् । पार्थः समन्तात्समरे प्रेषयामास मृत्यवे
Then, blocking those great warriors with a net of arrows, Partha sent them all around to death in the battle.
शल्यस्तु समरे जिष्णुं क्रीडन्निव महारथः । आजघानोरसि क्रुद्धो भल्लैः सन्नतपर्वभिः
But Shalya, the great charioteer, as if playing in battle, struck Jishnu in the chest in anger with broad-headed arrows.
तस्य पार्थो धनुश्छित्त्वा हस्तावापं च पञ्चभिः । अथैनं सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैर्भृशं विव्याध मर्मणि
Arjuna cut down his bow and, with five arrows, struck his hands; then, with sharp shafts, he deeply wounded him in the vital points.
अथान्यद्धनुरादाय समरे भारसाधनम् । मद्रेश्वरो रणे जिष्णुं ताडयामास रोषितः
Then, taking up another bow, strong for bearing the burden of battle, the king of the Madras, enraged, struck Jishnu in the fight.
त्रिभिः शरैर्महाराज वासुदेवं कच पञ्चभिः । भीमसेनं च नवभिर्बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत्
With three arrows, O King, he struck Vasudeva, and with five, Kaca; with nine, he pierced Bhimasena in the arms and chest.
ततो द्रोणो महाराज मागधश्च महारथः । दुर्योधनसमादिष्टौ तं देशमुपजग्मतुः
Then Drona, O King, and the mighty car-warrior, the king of Magadha, both commanded by Duryodhana, approached that place.
यत्र पार्थो महाराज भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः । कौरव्यस्य महासेनां जघ्नुतुः सुमहारथौ
There, O King, the great warriors Arjuna and Bhimasena, sons of Pandu, were slaughtering the great army of the Kauravas.
जयत्सेनस्तु समरे भीमं भीमायुधं युधि। विव्याध निशितैर्बाणैरष्टभिर्भरतर्षभ
In battle, Jayatsena struck Bhima, who wielded terrible weapons, with eight sharp arrows, O bull among the Bharatas.
तं भीमो दशभिर्विद्धा पुनर्वीव्याध पञ्चभिः । सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन रथनीडादपातयत्
Bhima, wounded by ten arrows, struck him back with five more, and with a broad-headed shaft, he brought down his charioteer from the chariot-seat.
उद्भ्रांतैस्तुरगैः सोऽथ द्रवमाणैः समन्ततः । मागधोऽपसृतो राजा सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः
Then, as his horses bolted wildly in all directions, the king of Magadha fled, in full view of the entire army.
द्रोणश्च विवरं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनं शिलीमुखैः । विव्याध बाणैर्निशितैः पञ्चषष्टिभिरायसैः
Drona, seeing an opening, struck Bhimasena with sixty-five sharp iron arrows.
तं भीमः समरश्लाघी गुरुं पितृसमं रणे। विव्याध पञ्चभिर्भल्लैस्तथा षष्ट्या च भारत
Bhima, proud in battle, struck his teacher, revered as a father, with five broad-headed arrows and then with sixty more, O Bharata.
अर्जुनस्तु सुशर्माणं विद्ध्वा बहुभिरायसैः। व्यधमत्तस्य तत्सैन्यं महाभ्राणि यथाऽनिलः
Arjuna, having struck Susharma with many iron arrows, scattered his great forces, as the wind scatters mighty clouds.
ततो भीष्मश्च राज च कौसल्यश्च बृहद्बलः । समवर्तन्त संक्रुद्धा भीमसेनधनञ्जयौ
Then Bhishma, the king, and Brihadbala of Kosala, enraged, turned against Bhimasena and Dhananjaya.
