कृपश्च कृतवर्माच भगदत्तश्च वीर्यवान् । विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ चित्रसेनश्च संयुगे
Kripa, Kritavarma, the mighty Bhagadatta, Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti, and Citraseṇa joined the battle.
दुर्मर्षणो विकर्णश्च सिन्धुराजश्च वीर्यवान्। भीमं ते विव्यधुस्तूर्णं शल्यहेतोररिन्दमाः
Durmarshana, Vikarṇa, and the mighty Sindhu king—all these slayers of foes swiftly attacked Bhima for Shalya's sake.
स च तान्प्रति विव्याध पञ्चभिः पञ्चभिः शरैःक । शल्यं विव्याध सप्तत्या पुनश्च दशभिः शरैः
In return, he struck each of them with five arrows; he struck Shalya with seventy arrows, and then again with ten more.
तं शल्यो नवभिर्भित्त्वा पुनर्विव्याध पञ्चभिः । सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन गाढं विव्याध मर्मणि
Shalya pierced him with nine arrows, then struck him again with five; and with a broad-headed shaft, he deeply wounded Bhima's charioteer in a vital spot.
विशोकं प्रेक्ष्य निर्भिन्नं भीमसेनः प्रतापवान् । मद्रराजं त्रिभिर्बाणैर्बाह्वोरुरुसि चार्पयत्
Beholding Vishoka struck down, the mighty Bhimasena pierced the king of Madra with three arrows in his arms and thighs.
तथेतरान्महेष्वासांस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरजिह्मगैः । ताजयामास समरे सिंहवाद्विननाद च
In the same way, he struck other great bowmen in battle with three straight-flying arrows each, roaring like a lion.
ते हि यत्ता महेष्वासाः पाण्डवं युद्धकोविदम् । त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरकुण्ठाग्रैर्भृशं मर्मस्वताडयन्
Those great bowmen, skilled in war, then struck the Pandava with three sharp arrows each, aiming fiercely at his vital points.
सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासो भीमसेनो न विव्यथे । पर्वतो वारिधाराभिर्वर्षमाणैरिवाम्बुदैः
Though deeply wounded, the mighty bowman Bhimasena was not shaken, like a mountain unmoved by torrents of rain from the clouds.
स तु क्रोधसमाविष्टः पाण्डवानां महारथः । मद्रेश्वरं त्रिभिर्बाणैर्भृशं विद्ध्वा महायशाः
Then, seized by wrath, the great chariot-warrior of the Pandavas, famed for his valor, struck the lord of Madra hard with three arrows.
कृपं च नवभिर्बाणैर्भृशं विद्ध्वा समन्ततः । प्रग्ज्योतिषं शतैराजौ राजन्विव्याध सायकैः
He struck Kripa all around with nine arrows, and in the battle, O King, he wounded the ruler of Pragjyotisha with hundreds of shafts.
ततस्तु सशरं चापं सात्वतस्य महात्मनः । क्षुरप्रेण सुतीक्ष्णेन चिच्छेद कृतहस्तवत्
Then, with a razor-headed arrow, sharp as a blade, he swiftly cut down the bow of the noble Satyaki, as if it were held in his hand.
तथान्यद्धनुरादाय कृतवर्मा वृकोदरम् । आजघान भ्रुवोर्मध्ये नाराचेन परंतपः
Then Kritavarma, the scorcher of foes, taking up another bow, struck Vrikodara between the brows with a steel-tipped arrow.
भीमस्तु समरे विद्ध्वा शल्यं नवभिरायसैः । भगदत्तं त्रिभिश्चैव कृतवर्माणमष्टभिः
But Bhima, in battle, struck Shalya with nine iron arrows, Bhagadatta with three, and Kritavarma with eight.
द्वाभ्यां द्वाभ्यां तु विव्याध गौतमप्रभृतीन्रथान् । तेऽपि तं समरे राजन्विव्यधुर्निशितैः शरैः
He struck Kripa and the other chariot-warriors with two arrows each; and they, O King, in turn wounded him in battle with keen shafts.
स तथा पीड्यमानोऽपि सर्वशस्त्रैर्महारथैः । मत्वा तृणेन तांस्तुल्यान्विचचार गतव्यथः
Though thus harassed by all those great chariot-warriors with their weapons, he considered them as straw and moved about untroubled.
ते चापि रथिनां श्रेष्ठा भीमाय निशिताञ्शरान् । प्रेषयामासुरव्याग्राः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः
Then those tiger-like best of chariot-warriors, in hundreds and thousands, sent sharp arrows at Bhima.
तस्य शक्तिं महावेगां भगदत्तो महारथः। चिक्षेप समरे वीरः स्वर्णदण्डां महमते
Bhagadatta, the great chariot-warrior, hurled at him in battle a mighty spear with a golden shaft, swift as thought.
तोमरं सैन्धवो राजा पट्टसं च महाभुजः । शतघ्नीं च कृपो राजञ्छरं शल्यश्च संयुगे
The Sindhu king, strong-armed, cast a javelin and a sword; Kripa, O King, hurled a mace, and Shalya an arrow in the fight.
अथेतरे महेष्वासाः पञ्च पञ्च शिलीमुखान् । भीमसेनं समुद्दिश्य प्रेषयमासुरोजसा
Then the other great bowmen, with all their strength, each sent five winged arrows at Bhimasena.
तोमरं च द्विधा चक्रे क्षुरप्रेणानिलात्मजः । पट्टसं च त्रिभिर्बाणैश्चिच्छेद तिलकाण्डवत्
The son of the wind-god cut the javelin in two with a razor-headed arrow, and split the sword into pieces with three arrows, as if it were a sesame stalk.
स बिभेद शतघ्नीं च नवभिः कङ्कपत्रिभिः । मद्रराजप्रयुक्तं च शरं छित्त्वा महारथः
He shattered the mace with nine vulture-feathered arrows, and the great chariot-warrior cut down the arrow launched by the king of Madra.
शक्तिं चिच्छेद सहसा भगदत्तेरितां रणे। तथेतराञ्शरान्घोराञ्शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः
He swiftly cut the spear hurled by Bhagadatta in battle, and likewise those other terrible arrows with his own, whose heads were bent like the crescent moon.
भीमसेनो रणश्लाघी त्रिधैकैकं समाच्छिनत्। तांश्च सर्वान्महेष्वासांस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरताडयत्
Bhimasena, proud of his prowess in battle, cut down each opponent three times, and struck all those great archers with three arrows each.
ततो धनञ्जयस्तत्र वर्तमाने महारणे । आजगाम रथेनाजौ भीमं दृष्ट्वा महारथम्
Then Dhananjaya arrived there, as the great battle raged, coming onto the field in his chariot, having seen Bhima, the mighty charioteer.
निघ्नन्तं समरे शत्रून्योधयानं च सायकैः । तौ तु तत्र महात्मानौ समेतौ वीक्ष्य पाण्डवौ
Seeing Bhima slaying enemies in combat and scattering the warriors with arrows, those two great-souled Pandavas met there.
न शशंसुर्जयं तत्र तावकाः पुरुषर्षभाः । अथार्जुनो रणे भीमं योधयन्तं महारथान्
The foremost men among your forces did not proclaim victory there; then Arjuna saw Bhima fighting the mighty charioteers in battle.
भीष्मस्य निधनाकाङ्क्षी पुरस्कृत्य शिखण्डिनम्। आससाद रणे वीरांस्तावकान्दश भारत
Desiring Bhishma's death, Arjuna, placing Shikhandi in front, approached the heroic warriors of your side, O Bharata, in battle.
ये स्म भीमं रणे राजन्योधयन्तो व्यवस्थिताः। बीभत्सुस्तानथाविध्यद्भीमस्य प्रियकाम्यया
Those kings who had stood against Bhima in battle, Bhībhatsu then pierced them, wishing to please Bhima.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा सुशर्माणमचोदयत् । अर्जुनस्य वधार्थाय भीमसेनस्य चोभयोः
Then King Duryodhana urged Susharman to kill both Arjuna and Bhimasena.
सुशर्मन्गच्छ शीघ्रं त्वं बलौघैः परिवारितः । जहि पाण्डुसुतावेतौ धनञ्जयवृकोदरौ
Susharman, go swiftly, surrounded by your troops; slay these two sons of Pandu, Dhananjaya and Vrikodara.
