चित्रसेनो विकर्णश्च तथा दुर्मर्षणो युवा। दशैते तावका योधा भीमसेनमयोधयन्
Citrasena, Vikarna, and the young Durmarshana—these ten warriors of yours attacked Bhimasena.
महत्या सेनया युक्ता नानादेशसमुत्थया । भीष्मस्य समरे राजन्प्रार्थयाना महद्यशः
With a great army drawn from many regions, seeking great fame in battle under Bhishma, O king.
शल्यस्तु नवभिर्बाणैर्भीमसेनमताडयत् । कृतवर्मा त्रिभिर्भाणैः कृपश्च नवभिः शरैः
Shalya struck Bhimasena with nine arrows, Kritavarma with three, and Kripa with nine sharp shafts.
चित्रसेनो विकर्णश्च भगदत्तश्च मारिष । दशभिर्दशभिर्बाणैर्भीमसेनमताडयन्
Citrasena, Vikarna, and Bhagadatta, O great one, each struck Bhimasena with ten arrows.
सैन्धवश्च त्रिभिर्बाणैर्भीमसेनमडायत् । विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ पञ्चभिः पञ्चभिः शरैः
The Sindhu king struck Bhimasena with three arrows, and Vind and Anuvinda of Avanti with five each.
दुर्मर्षणस्तु विंशत्या पाण्डवं निशितैः शरैः। स तान्सर्वान्महाराज राजमानान्पृथक्पृथक्
Durmarshana struck the Pandava with twenty keen arrows; but Bhimasena, O king, faced all those proud warriors one by one.
प्रवीरान्सर्वलोकस्य धार्तराष्ट्रान्महारथान् । जघान समरे वीरः पाण्डवः परवीरहा
The heroic Pandava, destroyer of enemy warriors, struck down the mighty chariot-warriors of the Dhartarashtra clan, the foremost of all the world's fighters, in battle.
सप्तभिः शल्यमाविध्यत्कृतवर्माणमष्टभिः । कृपस्य सशरं चापं मध्ये चिच्छेद भारत
With seven arrows he pierced Shalya, with eight he struck Kritavarma, and in the midst of battle, O Bharata, he cut down Kripa's bow along with its arrows.
अथैनं च्छिन्नधन्वानं पुनर्विव्याध सप्तभिः । विन्दानुविन्दौ च तथा त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरताडयत्
Then, as Kripa stood with his bow severed, he struck him again with seven arrows; likewise, he hit Vinda and Anuvinda with three arrows each.
दुर्मर्षणं च विंशत्या चित्रसेनं च पञ्चभिः । विकर्णं दशभिर्बाणैः पञ्चभिश्च जयद्रथम्
He struck Durmarshana with twenty arrows, Citraseṇa with five, Vikarṇa with ten arrows, and Jayadratha with five.
विद्ध्वा भीमोऽनदद्धृष्टः सैन्धवं च पुनस्त्रिभिः । अथान्यद्धनुरादाय गौतमो रथिनां वरः
Having wounded them, Bhima roared boldly and struck the Sindhu king again with three arrows; then, Gautama, the foremost of charioteers, took up another bow.
भीमं विव्याध संरब्धो दशभिर्निशितैः शरैः। स विद्धो दशभिर्बाणैस्तोत्रैरिव महाद्विपः
In anger, Gautama pierced Bhima with ten sharp arrows; wounded by those ten shafts, Bhima resembled a great elephant struck by goads.
ततः क्रुद्धो महाराज भीमसेनः प्रतापवान् । गौतमं ताडयामास शरैर्बहुभिराहवे
Then, O great king, the mighty Bhimasena, enraged, struck Gautama with many arrows in that battle.
सैन्धवस्य तथाऽश्वांश्च सारथिं च त्रिभिः शरैः । प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय कालान्तकसमद्युतिः
With three arrows he sent the horses and charioteer of the Sindhu king to the realm of death, his radiance like Time at the end of all things.
हताश्वात्तु रथात्तूर्णमवप्लुत्य महारथः । शरांश्चिक्षेप निशितान्भीमसेनस्य संयुगे
Leaping swiftly from his chariot, now without horses, the great chariot-warrior hurled sharp arrows at Bhimasena in the battle.
तस्य भीमो धनुर्मध्ये द्वाभ्यां चिच्छेद मारिष । भल्लाभ्यां भरतश्रेष्ठ सैन्धवस्य महात्मनः
Bhima, O best of the Bharatas, cut his bow in the middle with two arrows, and with two broad-headed shafts, he struck the great-souled Sindhu king.
स च्छिन्नधन्वा विरथो हताश्वो हतसारथिः । चित्रसेनरथं राजन्नारुरोह त्वरान्वितः
His bow cut, his chariot destroyed, his horses and charioteer slain, he quickly climbed onto Citraseṇa's chariot, O king.
अत्यद्भुतं रणे कर्म कृतवांस्तत्र पाण्डवः । महारथाञ्शरैर्विद्ध्वा वारयित्वा च मारिष
There, the Pandava performed a most astonishing feat in battle, O Māriṣa, striking and repelling the great chariot-warriors with his arrows.
विरथं सैन्धवं चक्रे सर्वलोकस्य पश्यतः । तदा न ममृषे शल्यो भीमसेस्य विक्रमम्
In the sight of all the world, he rendered the Sindhu king chariotless; at that, Shalya could not endure Bhimasena's prowess.
स संधाय शरांस्तीक्ष्णान्करमारपरिमार्जितान् । भीमं विव्याध समरे तिष्ठितिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्
Fitting sharp arrows polished by the craftsman, Shalya struck Bhima in battle and called out, 'Stand, stand!'
कृपश्च कृतवर्माच भगदत्तश्च वीर्यवान् । विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ चित्रसेनश्च संयुगे
Kripa, Kritavarma, the mighty Bhagadatta, Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti, and Citraseṇa joined the battle.
दुर्मर्षणो विकर्णश्च सिन्धुराजश्च वीर्यवान्। भीमं ते विव्यधुस्तूर्णं शल्यहेतोररिन्दमाः
Durmarshana, Vikarṇa, and the mighty Sindhu king—all these slayers of foes swiftly attacked Bhima for Shalya's sake.
स च तान्प्रति विव्याध पञ्चभिः पञ्चभिः शरैःक । शल्यं विव्याध सप्तत्या पुनश्च दशभिः शरैः
In return, he struck each of them with five arrows; he struck Shalya with seventy arrows, and then again with ten more.
तं शल्यो नवभिर्भित्त्वा पुनर्विव्याध पञ्चभिः । सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन गाढं विव्याध मर्मणि
Shalya pierced him with nine arrows, then struck him again with five; and with a broad-headed shaft, he deeply wounded Bhima's charioteer in a vital spot.
विशोकं प्रेक्ष्य निर्भिन्नं भीमसेनः प्रतापवान् । मद्रराजं त्रिभिर्बाणैर्बाह्वोरुरुसि चार्पयत्
Beholding Vishoka struck down, the mighty Bhimasena pierced the king of Madra with three arrows in his arms and thighs.
तथेतरान्महेष्वासांस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरजिह्मगैः । ताजयामास समरे सिंहवाद्विननाद च
In the same way, he struck other great bowmen in battle with three straight-flying arrows each, roaring like a lion.
ते हि यत्ता महेष्वासाः पाण्डवं युद्धकोविदम् । त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरकुण्ठाग्रैर्भृशं मर्मस्वताडयन्
Those great bowmen, skilled in war, then struck the Pandava with three sharp arrows each, aiming fiercely at his vital points.
सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासो भीमसेनो न विव्यथे । पर्वतो वारिधाराभिर्वर्षमाणैरिवाम्बुदैः
Though deeply wounded, the mighty bowman Bhimasena was not shaken, like a mountain unmoved by torrents of rain from the clouds.
स तु क्रोधसमाविष्टः पाण्डवानां महारथः । मद्रेश्वरं त्रिभिर्बाणैर्भृशं विद्ध्वा महायशाः
Then, seized by wrath, the great chariot-warrior of the Pandavas, famed for his valor, struck the lord of Madra hard with three arrows.
कृपं च नवभिर्बाणैर्भृशं विद्ध्वा समन्ततः । प्रग्ज्योतिषं शतैराजौ राजन्विव्याध सायकैः
He struck Kripa all around with nine arrows, and in the battle, O King, he wounded the ruler of Pragjyotisha with hundreds of shafts.
