भीष्मस्याभिमुखान्यातान्वारयामासुराहवे । धृष्टद्युम्नस्तु सैन्यानि प्राक्रोशंस्तु पुनः पुनः
Those who advanced toward Bhishma were stopped in the battle, while Dhrishtadyumna repeatedly rallied the troops with loud cries.
अभ्यद्रवत संरब्धो भीष्ममेकं महारथः । एषोऽर्जुनो रणे भीष्मं प्रयाति कुरुनन्दनः
That great chariot-warrior, burning with fury, rushed alone at Bhishma; 'Here comes Arjuna toward Bhishma in battle, O joy of the Kurus!'
अभ्यद्रवत माभैष्ट भीष्मो हि प्राप्स्यते न वः । अर्जुनं समरे योद्धुं नोत्सहेतापि वासवः
'He is charging—do not fear! Even Indra could not withstand Arjuna in battle, let alone Bhishma, who will not prevail against you.'
किमु भीष्मो रणे वीरा गतसत्वोऽल्पजीवितः। इति सेनापतेः श्रुत्वा पाण्डवानां महारथाः
'What then of Bhishma in battle, O heroes, whose spirit is gone and whose life is nearly spent?' Hearing the general's words, the great chariot-warriors of the Pandavas—
अभ्यद्रवन्त संहृष्टा गाङ्गेयस्य रथं प्रति। आगच्छतस्तान्समरे वार्योघानचला इव
—charged joyfully toward the chariot of Ganga's son; as they advanced in battle, they seemed like unshakable waves of a river.
अवारयन्त संहृष्टास्तावकाः पुरुषर्षभाः । दुःशासनो महाराज भयं त्यक्त्वा महारथः
Your valiant men, delighted, blocked them; Duhshasana, O King, casting off fear, that great chariot-warrior—
भीष्मस्य जीविताकाङ्क्षी धनञ्जयमुपाद्रवत् । तथैव पाण्डवाः शूरा गाङ्गेयस्य रथं प्रति
—desiring to save Bhishma's life, rushed at Dhananjaya; likewise, the brave Pandavas advanced toward Ganga's son's chariot.
अभ्यद्रवन्त संग्रामे तव पुत्रान्महारथाः । तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम चित्ररूपं विशांपते
In the battle, your sons, the great chariot-warriors, charged at them; there, O lord of the people, we beheld a wondrous and marvelous sight.
दुःशासनरथं प्राप्य यत्पार्थो नात्यवर्तत । यथा वारयते वेला क्षुब्धतोयं महार्णवम्
When Partha reached Duhshasana's chariot, he did not turn away, just as the shore withstands the surging waters of the mighty ocean.
तथैव पाण्डवं क्रुद्धं तव पुत्रो न्यवारयत्। उभौ तौ रथिनां श्रेष्ठावुभौ भारतदुर्जयौ
In the same way, your son held back the enraged Pandava; both were foremost among chariot-warriors, both unconquerable, O Bharata.
उभौ चन्द्रार्कसदृशौ कान्त्या दीप्त्या च भारत। तथा तौ जातसंरम्भावन्योन्यवधकाङ्क्षिणौ
Both shone with radiance and brilliance like the moon and sun, O Bharata; thus, those two, now inflamed, each desired to slay the other.
समीयतुर्महासङ्ख्ये मयशक्रौ यथा पुरा। दुःशासनो महाराज पाण्डवं विशिखैस्त्रिभिः
They approached each other in the great battle, like Maya and Shakra once did; Duhshasana, O King, struck the Pandava with three arrows.
वासुदेवं च विंशत्या ताडयामास संयुगे। ततोऽर्जुनो जातमन्युर्वार्ष्णेयं वीक्ष्य पीडितम्
And he struck Vasudeva with twenty arrows in the fight; then Arjuna, seeing the Vrishni afflicted, grew angry.
दुःशासनं शतेनाजौ नाराचानां समार्पयत्। ते तस्य कवचं भित्त्वा पपुः शोणितमाहवे
Arjuna, enraged, showered Duhshasana with a hundred iron arrows in battle; those pierced his armor and drank his blood in the fray.
यथैव पन्नगा राजंस्तटाकं तृषितास्तथा।' दुःशासनस्त्रिभिः क्रुद्धः पार्थं विव्याध पत्रिभिः। ललाटे भरतश्रेष्ठ शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः
Just as thirsty serpents, O King, drink from a lake, so too; Duhshasana, furious, pierced Partha with three feathered arrows in the forehead, O best of Bharatas.
ललाटस्थैस्तु तैर्बाणैः शुशुभे पाण्डवो रणे। यथा मेरुर्महाराज शृङ्गैरत्यर्थमुच्छ्रितैः
With those arrows lodged in his forehead, Pandava shone in battle like Mount Meru, O King, with its exceedingly lofty peaks.
सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासः पुत्रेण तव धन्विना। व्यराजत रणे पार्थः किंशुकः पुष्पवानिव
Thus, greatly wounded by your son, the mighty archer, Partha gleamed in battle like a blossoming kimshuka tree.
दुःशासनं ततः क्रुद्धः पीडयामास पाण्डवः। पर्वणीव सुसंक्रुद्धो राहुः पूर्णं निशाकरम्
Then Pandava, enraged, tormented Duhshasana, just as Rahu, greatly agitated, afflicts the full moon.
पीड्यमानो बलवता पुत्रस्तव विशांपते । विव्याध समरे पार्थं कङ्कपत्रैः शिलाशितैः
Tormented by the mighty Pandava, your son, O lord of men, pierced Partha in battle with arrows tipped like the feathers of a vulture and sharpened on stone.
तस्य पार्थो धनुश्छित्वा रथं चास्य त्रिभिः शरैः । आजघान ततः पश्चात्पुत्रं ते निशितैः शरैः
Partha cut his bow and struck his chariot with three arrows; then, afterwards, he struck your son with sharp arrows.
सोऽन्यत्कार्मुकमादाय भीमस्य प्रमुखे स्थितः। अर्जुनं पञ्चाविंशत्या बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत्
Taking up another bow, he stood before Bhima and showered Arjuna with twenty-five arrows on his arms and chest.
तस्य क्रुद्धो महाराज पाण्डवः शत्रुतापनः । अप्रैषीद्विशिखान्घोरान्यमदण्डोपमान्बहून्
Then, O King, Pandava, destroyer of foes, enraged, sent many fierce arrows, dreadful as the rod of punishment.
अप्राप्तानेव तान्बाणांश्चिच्छेद तनयस्तव । यतमानस्य पार्थस्य तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
But your son cut down those arrows before they reached him, as Partha strove; that seemed wondrous indeed.
पार्थं च निशितैर्बाणैरविध्यत्तनयस्तव । ततः क्रुद्धो रणे पार्थः शरान्संधाय कार्मुके
And your son pierced Partha with sharp arrows; then, enraged in battle, Partha fitted arrows to his bow.
प्रेषयामास समरे स्वर्णपुङ्खाञ्छिलाशितान् । न्यमञ्जंस्ते महाराज तस्य काये महात्मनः
He sent forth, in battle, arrows with golden shafts and sharpened on stone; those lodged in the body of the great-souled one, O King.
यथा हंसा महाराज तटाकं प्राप्य भारत। पीडितश्चैव पुत्रस्ते पाण्डवेन महात्मना
Just as swans, O King, reach a lake, so too; your son was afflicted by the great-souled Pandava.
हित्वा पार्थं रणे तूर्णं भीष्मस्य रथमाव्रजत्। अगाधे मञ्जतस्तस्य द्वीपो भीष्मोऽभवत्तदा
Leaving Partha swiftly in battle, he approached Bhishma's chariot; as he sank in the deep, Bhishma became his island then.
प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञां पुत्रस्तव विशांपते । अवारयत्ततः शूरो भूय एव पराक्रमी
Then, regaining consciousness, your son, O lord of men, once again, heroic and valiant, blocked the enemy.
शरैः सुनिशितैः पार्थं यथा वृत्रं पुरन्दरः। निर्बिभेद महाकायो विव्यथे नैव चार्जुनः
With sharp arrows, the mighty-bodied one pierced Partha as Purandara did Vritra; yet Arjuna was not shaken.
सात्यकिं दंशितं युद्धे भीष्मायाभ्युद्यतं रणे। आर्श्यशृङ्गिर्महेष्वासो वारयामास संयुगे
In battle, Bhishma, raising his weapons against Satyaki, was checked by Arshya-shringa, the great archer, in the fight.
