तं दृष्ट्वा क्षत्रियाः शुराः प्रतपन्तं तरस्विनम् । द्विफल्गुनमिमं लोकं मेनिरे तस्य कर्मभिः
Seeing that valiant and fiery warrior blazing forth, the brave Kshatriyas thought him to be a second Arjuna by his deeds.
तेनार्दिता महाराज भारती सा महाचमूः । व्यभ्रमत्तत्रतत्रैव योषिन्मदवशादिव
By him, O King, the great Bharata host was struck and scattered here and there, like a woman maddened by passion.
द्रावयित्वा महासैन्यं कम्पयित्वा महारथान् । नन्दयामास सुहृदो मयं जित्वेव वासवः
Having routed the great army and shaken the mighty chariot-warriors, he delighted his friends as Indra does after victory.
तेन निद्राव्यमाणानि तव सैन्यानि संयुगे। चक्रुरार्तस्वनं घोरं पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम्
By him, as your troops were driven back in battle, they uttered a terrible cry of distress, like the roar of thunderclouds.
तं श्रुत्वा निनदं घोरं तव सैन्यस्य भारत। मारुतोद्धूतवेगस्य सागरस्येव पर्वणि
Hearing that terrible roar of your army, O Bhārata, which surged like the ocean whipped up by the wind at the time of the full moon,
दुर्योधनस्तदा राजन्नार्श्यशृङ्गिमभाषत। एष कार्ष्णिर्महाबाहो द्वितीय इव फल्गुनः
Then, O King, Duryodhana spoke to Rākṣasa Śṛṅgi: 'Here is Kārṣṇi, mighty-armed, like a second Phālguna.'
चमूं द्रावयते क्रोधाद्वृत्रो देवचमूमिव । तस्य चान्यत्र पश्यामि संयुगे भेषजं महत्
In his wrath, he is routing the army, as Vṛtra did the army of the gods; and I see no great remedy for him in battle except elsewhere.
ऋते त्वां राक्षसश्रेष्ठं सर्वविद्यासु पारगम् । स गत्वा त्वरितं वीरं जहि सौभद्रमाहवे
Except for you, best of Rākṣasas, master of all sciences, go swiftly and slay the heroic Saubhadra in battle.
वयं पार्थं हनिष्यामो भीष्मद्रोणपुरोगमाः । स एवमुक्तो बलवान्राक्षसेन्द्रः प्रतापवान्
We, with Bhīṣma and Droṇa at the forefront, will slay Pārtha; thus addressed, the powerful and valiant lord of the Rākṣasas,
प्रययौ समरे तूर्णं तव पुत्रस्य शासनात्। नर्दमानो महानादं प्रावृषीव बलाहकः
At your son's command, quickly advanced into battle, roaring a great sound like a thundercloud in the rainy season.
तस्य शब्देन महता पाण्डवानां बलं महत् । प्राचलत्सर्वतो राजन्वातोद्धूत इवार्णवः
At that mighty sound, O King, the great army of the Pāṇḍavas was shaken on all sides, like the ocean stirred by the wind.
बहवश्च महाराज तस्य नादेन भीषिताः। प्रियान्प्राणान्परित्यज्य निपेतुर्धरणीतले
And many, O King, terrified by that roar, abandoned their dear lives and fell to the ground.
कार्ष्णिश्चापि मुदा युक्तः प्रगृह्य सशरं धनुः । नृत्यन्निव रथोपस्थे तद्रक्षः समुपाद्रवत्
But Kārṣṇi, filled with joy, took up his bow with arrows, and, as if dancing on the chariot, advanced toward that Rākṣasa.
ततः स राक्षसः क्रुद्धः संप्राप्यैवार्जुनं रणे। नातिदूरे स्थितां तस्य द्रावयामास वै चमूम्
Then that enraged Rākṣasa, having reached Arjuna in battle, began to rout his army, which stood not far away.
तां वध्यमानां च तथा पाण्डवानां महाचमूम्। प्रत्यद्ययौ रणे रक्षो देवसेनां यथा बलः
And as the great army of the Pāṇḍavas was thus being slaughtered, that Rākṣasa advanced against them in battle, like Bala against the army of the gods.
विमर्दः सुमहानासीत्तस्य सैन्यस्य मारिष । रक्षसा घोररूपेण वध्यमानस्य संयुगे
Then there was a great clash, O Māriṣa, as that army was slaughtered in battle by the Rākṣasa of terrible form.
ततः शरसहस्त्रैस्तां पाण्डवानां महाचमूम्। व्यद्रावयद्रणे रक्षो दर्शयतत्स्वपराक्रमम्
Then, with thousands of arrows, the Rākṣasa routed the great army of the Pāṇḍavas in battle, displaying his own valor.
सा वध्यमाना च तथा पाण्डवानामनीकिनी । रक्षसा घोररूपेण प्रदुद्राव रणे भयात्
Thus, the division of the Pāṇḍavas, being slaughtered by the Rākṣasa of terrible form, fled in fear on the battlefield.
प्रमृद्य च रणे सेनां पद्मिनीं वारणो यथा। ततोऽभिद्रद्राव रणे द्रौपदेयान्महाबलान्
Crushing the army in battle as an elephant crushes a lotus pond, he then rushed upon the mighty sons of Draupadī in the fight.
ते तु क्रुद्धा महेष्वासा द्रौपदेयाः प्रहारिणः। राक्षसं दुद्रुवुः सङ्ख्ये ग्रहाः पञ्च रविं यथा
But the sons of Draupadī, great archers, enraged and fierce in fight, rushed at the Rākṣasa like five planets at the sun.
वीर्यवद्भिस्ततस्तैस्तु पीडितो राक्षसोत्तमः । यथा युगक्षये घोरे चन्द्रमाः पञ्चभिर्ग्रहैः
Oppressed by those mighty warriors, the foremost of Rākṣasas was afflicted, like the moon by five planets at the dreadful end of an age.
प्रतिविन्ध्यस्ततो रक्षो बिभेद निशितैः शरैः । सर्वपारशवैस्तूर्णमकुण्ठाग्रैर्महाबलः
Then Prativindhya swiftly pierced the Rākṣasa with sharp arrows, all with iron heads and unblunted points, being of great strength.
स तैर्भिन्नतनुत्राणः शुशुभे राक्षसोत्तमः । मरीचिभिरिवार्कस्य संस्यूतो जलदो महान्
With his armor shattered by those blows, the foremost of Rakshasas shone like a great cloud pierced by the rays of the sun.
विषक्तैः सशरैश्चापि तपनीयपरिच्छदैः । आर्श्यशृङ्गिर्बभौ राजन्दीप्तशृङ्ग इवाचलः
Struck with arrows adorned with gold, he, Arshya-shringa, gleamed, O King, like a blazing mountain peak.
ततस्ते भ्रातरः पञ्च राक्षसेन्द्रं महाहवे। विव्यधुर्निशितैर्बाणैस्तपनीयविभूषितैः
Then those five brothers, in that great battle, struck the king of the Rakshasas with sharp arrows adorned with gold.
स निर्भिन्नः शरैर्घोरैर्भुजगैः कोपितैरिव । अलम्बुसो भृशं राजन्नागेन्द्र इव चुक्रुधे
Pierced by those fierce arrows, like enraged serpents, Alambusa grew exceedingly angry, O King, like a lord of serpents.
सोऽतिविद्धो महाराज मुहूर्तमथ मारिष । प्रविवेश तमो दीर्घं पीडितस्तैर्महारथैः
Thus wounded, O King, the Rakshasa, overwhelmed by those great warriors, entered into deep darkness for a moment.
प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञां क्रोधेन द्विगुणीकृतः । चिच्छेद सायकैस्तेषां ध्वजांश्चैव धनूंषि च
Regaining his senses, his anger doubled, he cut down their banners and bows with his arrows.
एकैकं पञ्चभिर्बाणैराजघान स्मयन्निव । अलम्बुसो रथोपस्थे नृत्यन्निव महारथः
Alambusa, the great chariot-warrior, as if smiling, struck each of them with five arrows while dancing on his chariot.
त्वरमाणः सुसंबद्धो हयांस्तेषां महात्मनाम् । जघान राक्षसः क्रुद्धः सारथींश्च सहस्रशः
Hastening, well-prepared, the enraged Rakshasa struck the horses of those great-souled ones, and thousands of their charioteers.
