यथा गोवृषभो वर्षं संधारयति स्वात्पतत् । भीमस्तथा द्रोणमुक्तं शरवर्षमदीधरत्
Just as a bull withstands the rain falling upon it, so Bhima endured the shower of arrows released by Drona.
अद्भुतं च महाराज तत्र चक्रे वृकोदरः । यत्पुत्रांस्तेऽवधीत्सङ्ख्ये द्रोणं चैव न्यवारयत्
And there, O king, Vrikodara performed a marvel: he slew your sons in battle and also repelled Drona.
पुत्रेषु तव वीरेषु चिक्रीडार्जुनपूर्वजः । मृगेष्विव महाराज चरन्व्याघ्रो महाबलः
Among your heroic sons, Arjuna's elder brother played, O king, like a mighty tiger roaming among deer.
यथा हि पशुमध्यस्थो द्रावयेत पशून्वृकः । वृकोदरस्तव सुतांस्तथा व्यद्रावयद्रणे
Just as a wolf in the midst of cattle scatters them, so Vrikodara drove your sons away in battle.
गाङ्गेयो भगदत्तश्च गोतमश्च महारथाः । पाण्डवं रभसं युद्धे वारयामासुरर्जुनम्
Ganga's son, Bhagadatta, and Gautama, great chariot-warriors, strove to check Arjuna's fierce advance in battle.
अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य तेषां सोऽतिरथो रणे प्रवीरांस्तव सैन्येषु प्रेषयामास मृत्यवे
That supreme chariot-warrior countered their weapons with his own, and sent your valiant soldiers to death on the battlefield.
अभिमन्युस्तु राजानमम्बष्ठं लोकविश्रुतम् । विरथं रथिनां श्रेष्ठं कारयामास सायकैः
Abhimanyu, with arrows, rendered the renowned king of the Ambashtas, foremost among chariot-warriors, without a chariot.
विरथो वध्यमानस्तु सौभद्रेण यशस्विना । अवप्लुत्य रथात्तूर्णमम्बष्ठो वसुधाधिपः
Deprived of his chariot and being attacked by the illustrious son of Subhadra, the king of the Ambashtas swiftly leapt from his chariot to the ground.
असिं चिक्षेप समरे सौभद्रस्य महात्मनः । आरुरोह रथं चैव हार्दिक्यस्य महाबलः
In battle, he hurled a sword at the great-souled son of Subhadra, and then climbed onto the powerful chariot of Hardikya.
आपतन्तं तु निस्त्रिंशं युद्धमार्गविशारदः । लाघवाद्व्यंसयामास सौभद्रः परवीरहा
As the sword came rushing, Subhadra's son, skilled in the ways of battle, evaded it with agility, slayer of enemy heroes.
व्यंसितं वीक्ष्य निस्त्रिंशं सौभद्रेण रणे तदा। साधुसाध्विति सैन्यानां प्रणादोऽभूद्विशांपते

धृष्टद्युम्नमुखास्त्वन्ये तव सैन्यमयोधयन्। तथैव तावकाः सर्वे पाण्डुसैन्यमयोधयन्
Others, led by Dhrishtadyumna, fought your army, and likewise all your men battled the Pandava army.

तलैश्चैवाथ निस्त्रिंशैर्बाहुभिश्च सुसंस्थितैः। विवरं प्राप्य चान्योन्यमनयन्यमसादनम्

न्यहनच्च पिता पुत्रं पुत्रश्च पितरं तथा। व्याकुलीकृतसंकल्पा युयुधुस्तत्र मानवाः

रणे चारूणि चापानि हेमपृष्ठानि मारिष । हतानामपविद्धानि कलापाश्च महाधनाः
In the battle, bows adorned with gold backs, and the rich quivers of the slain, were cast aside, O great one.
जातरूपमयैः पुङ्खै राजतैर्निशिताः शराः। तैलधौता व्यराजन्त निर्मुक्तभुजगोपमाः
Arrows with golden feathers and sharp silver tips, polished with oil, shone forth, resembling released serpents.
खङ्गाश्च दान्तत्सरवो जातरूपपरिष्कृताः । चर्माणि चापविद्धानि रुक्मचित्राणि धन्विनां
Swords with ivory hilts, decorated with gold, and the shields of archers, adorned with golden designs, lay scattered.
सुवर्णाविकृताः प्रासाः प्रभग्ना हेमभूषिताः। जातरूपमया यष्ट्यः शक्त्यश्च कनकोज्ज्वलाः
Broken spears adorned with gold, golden shafts, and radiant lances with golden tips were strewn about.
अवस्कन्दाश्च पतिता मुसलानि गुरूणि च । परिघाः पट्टसाश्चैव भिण्डिपालाश्च मारिष
Heavy maces and clubs, as well as iron bars, broadswords, and bludgeons, had fallen to the ground, O great one.
पतिता विविधाश्चापाश्चित्रा हेमपरिष्कृताः । कुथा बहुविधाकाराश्चामरा व्यजनानि च
Various fallen bows, beautifully decorated with gold, as well as many-shaped shields and yak-tail fans, lay scattered.
नानाविधानि शस्त्राणि प्रगृह्य पतिता नराः। जीवन्त इव दृश्यनते गतसत्त्वा महारथाः
Men, having grasped various weapons, lay fallen; though their life was gone, the mighty warriors appeared as if still alive.
गजाविमथितैर्गात्रैर्मुसलैर्भिन्नमस्तकाः। गजावाजिरथक्षुण्णाः शेरते स्म नराः क्षितौ
Men, their bodies crushed by elephants, their heads smashed by maces, trampled by elephants, horses, and chariots, lay on the earth.
तथैवाश्वनृनागानां शरीरैर्विबभौ तदा। संछन्ना वसुधा राजन्पर्वतैरिव शातितैः
In the same way, the earth shone, O king, covered by the bodies of horses, men, and elephants, like mountains cut down.
समरे पतितैश्चैव शक्त्यृष्टिशरतोमरैः। निस्त्रिंशैः पट्टसैः प्रासैरवस्कन्दैः परश्वथैः
In the battle, the ground was strewn with fallen spears, lances, arrows, javelins, swords, broadswords, pikes, heavy clubs, and axes.
परिघैर्भिण्डिपालैश्च शतघ्नीभिश्च मारिष। शरीरैः शस्त्रनिर्भिन्नैः समास्तीर्यत मेदिनी
With iron bars, bludgeons, and engines of war, O great one, the earth was covered with bodies pierced by weapons.
विशब्दैरल्पशब्दैश्च शोणितौगपरिप्लुतैः। गतासुभिरमित्रघ्न विबभौ निचिता मही
With loud and faint cries, and streams of blood, the earth, heaped with the lifeless bodies of enemy-slayers, shone.
सतलत्रैः सकेयूरैर्बाहुभिश्चन्दनोक्षितैः । हस्तिहस्तोपमैश्छिन्नैरूरुभिश्च तरस्विनाम्
With arms adorned with bracelets and armlets, smeared with sandalwood, and thighs like elephant trunks, severed from the valiant, the ground was covered.
बद्धचूजामणिवरैः शिरोभिश्च सकुण्डलैः । पातितै ऋषभाक्षाणां बभौ भारत मेदिनी
With heads adorned with jeweled diadems and earrings, fallen from the bull-like warriors, the earth shone, O Bharata.
