Though covered in many ways by your sons, O lord of men, the hero licked his lips like a proud tiger.
Then Bhima, his chest expanded, struck the king with a razor-sharp, well-formed arrow in the great battle.
Enraged, he struck again, causing distress to his senses. With another sharp, golden arrow, he felled him, as a lion fells a small animal.
Then Bhimasena, with arrows sharpened like stones, prepared seven to slay your sons, O bull among Bharatas.
Sent by Bhimasena, those arrows from his strong bow struck down your sons, the great chariot-warriors, from their chariots.
Anadhṛṣṭi, Kuṇḍabhedin, Virāja with shining eyes, Dīrghabāhu, Subāhu, and likewise Makaradhvaja.
Those heroes fell, O bull among the Bharatas, shining like kimshuka trees covered in blossoms, dropping in the spring.
Then the rest of your sons fled from the great battle, regarding mighty Bhimasena as Time itself.
But Drona, in the fight, scorched your sons with his arrows, surrounding the hero as rain clouds envelop a mountain.
There we witnessed the wondrous valor of Kunti's son, who, though restrained by Drona, struck down your sons.
Just as a bull withstands the rain falling upon it, so Bhima endured the shower of arrows released by Drona.
And there, O king, Vrikodara performed a marvel: he slew your sons in battle and also repelled Drona.
Among your heroic sons, Arjuna's elder brother played, O king, like a mighty tiger roaming among deer.
Just as a wolf in the midst of cattle scatters them, so Vrikodara drove your sons away in battle.
Ganga's son, Bhagadatta, and Gautama, great chariot-warriors, strove to check Arjuna's fierce advance in battle.
That supreme chariot-warrior countered their weapons with his own, and sent your valiant soldiers to death on the battlefield.
Abhimanyu, with arrows, rendered the renowned king of the Ambashtas, foremost among chariot-warriors, without a chariot.
Deprived of his chariot and being attacked by the illustrious son of Subhadra, the king of the Ambashtas swiftly leapt from his chariot to the ground.
In battle, he hurled a sword at the great-souled son of Subhadra, and then climbed onto the powerful chariot of Hardikya.
As the sword came rushing, Subhadra's son, skilled in the ways of battle, evaded it with agility, slayer of enemy heroes.
Seeing the sword deflected by Subhadra's son in battle, a cry of 'Well done, well done!' arose among the troops, O lord of men.
Others, led by Dhrishtadyumna, fought your army, and likewise all your men battled the Pandava army.
There arose a great tumult, O Bharata, among your forces and theirs, as they struck each other fiercely, performing difficult deeds.
For in battle, the proud heroes fought each other, grasping hair, striking with nails and teeth, with fists and knees.
With maces, swords, and well-armed arms, finding an opening, they struck each other down relentlessly.
Fathers struck sons, and sons likewise struck fathers; with their minds thrown into confusion, the men fought there.
In the battle, bows adorned with gold backs, and the rich quivers of the slain, were cast aside, O great one.
Arrows with golden feathers and sharp silver tips, polished with oil, shone forth, resembling released serpents.
Swords with ivory hilts, decorated with gold, and the shields of archers, adorned with golden designs, lay scattered.
Broken spears adorned with gold, golden shafts, and radiant lances with golden tips were strewn about.
