विदार्य प्राविशन्क्षिप्रं वल्मीकमिव पन्नगाः। स गाढविद्धो व्यथितो नागो भरतसत्तम
They swiftly penetrated, like serpents entering an anthill; deeply wounded and in pain, the elephant, O best of the Bharatas,
उपावृत्तमदः क्षिप्रमभ्यवर्तत वेगिनः । स प्रदुद्राव वेगेन प्रणदन्भैरवं रवम्
Its intoxication quickly subdued, turned back with great speed; it fled rapidly, roaring a terrifying sound.
संमर्दमानः स्वबलं वायुर्वृक्षानिवौजसा । तस्मिन्पराजिते नागे पाण्डवानां महारथाः
Crashing through its own forces like the wind scatters trees with its might; as that elephant was defeated, the great warriors of the Pāṇḍavas,
सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैर्युद्धायैवावतस्थिरे । ततो भीमं पुरस्कृत्य भगदत्तमुपाद्रवन्
Roared like lions and stood tall, ready for battle; then, with Bhīma at their head, they advanced upon Bhagadatta.
किरन्तो विविधान्बाणाञ्शस्त्राणि विविधानि च। तेषामापततां राजन्संक्रुद्धानाममर्षिणाम्
Showering diverse arrows and various weapons; as those furious and unyielding warriors charged forward, O King,
श्रुत्वा स निनदंक घोरममर्षाद्गतसाध्वसः । भगदत्तो महेष्वासः स्वनागं प्रत्यचोदयत्
Hearing their dreadful roar, Bhagadatta, undaunted and filled with wrath, urged on his own great elephant.
अङ्कुशाङ्गुष्ठनुदितः स गजप्रवरो युधि। तस्मिन्क्षणे समभवत्सांवर्तक इवानलः
Prompted in battle by the goad and the pressure of his heel, that foremost elephant in that moment became like a doomsday fire.
रथसङ्घांस्तथा नागान्हयांश्च हयसादिनः । पादातांश्च सुसंक्रुद्धः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशःक
Fiercely, he crushed chariots, elephants, horses with their riders, and foot soldiers, by the hundreds and thousands, in the battle.
अमृद्गात्समरे नागः संप्रधावंस्ततस्ततः। तेन संलोड्यमानं तु पाण्डवानां बलं महत्
The elephant did not spare anyone in the fight, charging here and there; by him, the great army of the Pāṇḍavas was trampled and tossed about.
संचुकोच महाराज चर्मेवाग्नौ समाहितम् । भग्नं तु स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा भगदत्तेन धीमता
O King, that army shrank back, like a hide consumed by fire; seeing his own force broken by the wise Bhagadatta,
घटोत्कचोऽथ संक्रुद्धो भगदत्तमुपाद्रवत्। विकटः परुषो राजन्दीप्तास्यो दीप्तलोचनः
Then Ghaṭotkaca, enraged, advanced upon Bhagadatta; monstrous and harsh, O King, with blazing mouth and fiery eyes,
रूपं विभीषणं कृत्वा रोषेण प्रज्वलन्निव । जग्राह विमलं शूलं गिरीणामपि दारणम्
Assuming a terrifying form, blazing with fury, he seized a spotless spear, capable of rending even mountains.
नागं जिघांसुः सहसा चिक्षेप च महाबलः। स विस्फुलिङ्गमालाभिः समन्तात्परिवेष्टितम्
Desiring to slay the serpent, the mighty one swiftly hurled it, which was surrounded on all sides by a garland of sparks.
तमापतन्तं सहसा दृष्ट्वा प्राग्ज्योतिषो नृपः । चिक्षेप रुचिरं तीक्ष्णमर्धचन्द्रं सुदारुणम्
Seeing that weapon rushing toward him, the king of Pragjyotisha quickly released a beautiful, sharp, and terribly fierce crescent-shaped arrow.
चिच्छेद तन्महच्छूलं तेन बाणेन वेगवान् । उत्पपात द्विधा च्छिन्नं शूलं हेमपरिष्कृतम्
With that swift arrow, he cut the great spear; split in two, the gold-adorned spear leapt up.
महाशनिर्यथा भ्रष्टा शक्रमुक्ता नभोगता । शूलं निपतितं दृष्ट्वा द्विधा कृत्तं च पार्थिवः
Like a great thunderbolt, loosed by Indra and falling through the sky, the king saw the spear, cut in two, fall down.
रुक्मदण्डां महाशक्तिं जग्राहाग्निशिखोपमान् । चिक्षेप तां राक्षसस्य तिष्ठितिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्
He seized a great spear with a golden shaft, blazing like a tongue of fire, hurled it at the Rakshasa, and shouted, 'Stand, stand!'
तामापतन्तीं संप्रेक्ष्य वियत्स्थामशनीमिव । उत्पत्य राक्षसस्तूर्णं जग्राह च ननाद च
Seeing that weapon rushing like a meteor in the sky, the Rakshasa swiftly leapt up, seized it, and roared.
बभञ्ज चैनां त्वरितो जानुन्यारोप्य भारत। पश्यतः पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Quickly placing it on his knee, he broke it, O Bharata, as the king of kings looked on; it appeared wondrous.
तदवेक्ष्य कृतं कर्म राक्षसेन बलीयसा। दिवि देवाः सगन्धर्वा मुनयश्चापि विस्मिताः
Witnessing that feat accomplished by the powerful Rakshasa, the gods, Gandharvas, and sages in heaven were astonished.
पाण्डवाश्च महाराज भीमसेनपुरोगमाः । साधुसाध्विति नादेन पृथिवीमन्वनादयन्
And the Pandavas, O great king, led by Bhimasena, filled the earth with shouts of 'Well done! Well done!'
तं तु श्रुत्वा महानादं प्रहृष्टानां महात्मनाम् । नामृष्यत महेष्वासो भगदत्तः प्रतापवान्
Hearing that great cry of the rejoicing high-souled ones, the mighty bowman Bhagadatta, full of energy, could not endure it.
स विष्फार्य महच्चापमिन्द्राशानिसमप्रभम् । अभिदुद्राव वेगेन पाण्डवानां महारथान्
He stretched his great bow, shining like Indra's thunderbolt, and rushed swiftly at the mighty chariot-warriors of the Pandavas.
विसृजन्विमलांस्तीक्ष्णान्नाराचाञ्ज्वलनप्रभान् । भीममेकेन विव्याध राक्षसं नवभिः शरैः
Releasing pure, sharp arrows blazing like fire, he struck Bhima with one, and the Rakshasa with nine shafts.
अभिमन्युं त्रिभिश्चैव केकयान्पञ्च पञ्चभिः । पूर्णायतविसृष्टेन शरेणानतपर्वणा
He struck Abhimanyu with three, the Kekayas with five each, with arrows fully drawn and unbroken in flight.
बिभेद दक्षिणं बाहुं क्षत्रेदवस्य चाहवे । पपात सहसा तस्य सशरं धनुरुत्तमम्
In battle, he pierced the right arm of Kshatradeva, and his excellent bow with its arrow suddenly fell from his hand.
द्रौपदेयांस्ततः पञ्च पञ्चभिः समताडयत् । भीमसेनस्य च क्रोधान्निजघान तुरंगमान्
Then he struck the five sons of Draupadi with five arrows, and in anger struck Bhimasena's horses.
ध्वजं केसरिणं चास्य चिच्छेद विशिखैस्त्रिभिः । निर्बिभेद त्रिभिश्चान्यैः सारथिं चास्य पत्रिभिः
With three arrows he cut down the banner of Bhimasena, and with three others pierced his charioteer.
स गाढविद्धो व्यथितो रथोपस्थ उपाविशत् । विशोको भरतश्रेष्ठ भगदत्तेन संयुगे
Deeply wounded and distressed, the charioteer sat down in the chariot, yet Viśoka, best of the Bharatas, remained unshaken in battle by Bhagadatta.
ततो भीमो महाबाहुर्विरथो रथिनां वरः । गदां प्रगृह्य वेगेन प्रचस्कन्द रथोत्तमात्
Then Bhima, the mighty-armed, foremost of chariot-warriors, dismounted from his excellent chariot, seizing his mace with speed.
