भीमसेनो महाबाहुर्नीलं नीलाञ्जनप्रभम्।' आरोप्य स्वरथं वीरो दुर्योधनमपाद्रवत्
Bhimasena, mighty-armed, the hero, set the dark-hued, collyrium-glowing Nila upon his own chariot and rushed toward Duryodhana.
घटोत्कचं च संप्रेक्ष्य राक्षसं घोरदर्शनम् ।। अभ्यधावत तेजस्वी भारज्वाजात्मजस्त्वरन्
Beholding Ghatotkaca, the Rakshasa of terrifying appearance, the radiant son of Bhima swiftly charged forward.
निजघान च संक्रुद्धो राक्षसान्भीमदर्शनान्। योऽभवन्नग्रतः क्रुद्धा राक्षसस्य पुरःसराः । विमुखांश्चैव तान्दृष्ट्वा द्रौणिचापच्युतैः शरैः
In great anger, he struck down the fearsome Rakshasas who stood at the front as Ghatotkaca’s vanguard, and seeing them turn away, he pierced them with arrows loosed from Drona’s bow.
अक्रुद्ध्यत महाकायो भैमसेनिर्घटोत्कचः। प्रादुश्चक्रे ततो मायां घोररूपां सुदारुणाम्
Then Ghatotkaca, son of Bhima, massive in form, was not enraged; instead, he unleashed a dreadful and terrible illusion.
मोहयन्समरे द्रौणिं मायावी राक्षसाधिपः। ततस्ते तावकाः सर्वे मायया विमुखीकृताःक
The lord of the Rakshasas, master of illusion, bewildered Drona’s son in battle; and by his illusion, all your troops were confounded.
अन्योन्यं समपश्यन्त निकृत्ता मेदिनीतले। विचेष्टमानाः कृपणाः शोणितेन परिप्लुताः
On the ground, they saw each other as enemies, pitiful, writhing, and drenched in blood.
द्रोणं दुर्योधनं शल्यमश्वत्थामानमेव च। प्रायशश्च महेष्वासा ये प्रधानाः स्म कौरवाः
Drona, Duryodhana, Shalya, Ashvatthaman, and most of the great bowmen who were the chief Kauravas—
विध्वस्ता रथिनः सर्वे गजाश्च विनिपातिताः। हयाश्चैव हयारोहाः सन्निकृत्ताः सहस्रशः
All the chariot-warriors were scattered, the elephants were felled, and the horses and their riders were cut down by the thousands.
तद्दृष्ट्वा तावकं सैन्यं विद्रुतं शिबिरं प्रति। मम प्राक्रोशतो राजंस्तथा देवव्रतस्य च
Seeing your army fleeing toward the camp, O King, both I and Devavrata cried out.
युध्यध्वं मा पलायध्वं मायैषा राक्षसी रणे। घटोत्कचप्रमुक्तेति नातिष्ठन्त विमोहिताः
"Fight! Do not flee! This is but a Rakshasa illusion in battle, released by Ghatotkaca!" But bewildered, they did not stand firm.
नैव ते श्रद्दधुर्भीता वदतोरावयोर्वचः । तांश्च प्रद्रवतो दृष्ट्वा जयं प्राप्ताश्च पाण्डवाः
Frightened, they did not believe the words we spoke; and seeing them in flight, the Pandavas attained victory.
घटोत्कचेन सहिताः सिंहनादान्प्रचक्रिरे । शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः समन्तान्नेदिरे भृशम्
Together with Ghatotkaca, they roared like lions, and the blare of conches and drums resounded mightily on all sides.
एवं तव बलं सर्वं हैडिम्बेन महात्मना। सूर्यास्तमनवेलायां प्रभग्नं विद्रुतं दिशः
Thus, at sunset, your entire force was shattered and scattered in all directions by the great-souled son of Hidimba.
तस्मिन्महति संक्रन्दे राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा। `पराजयं राक्षसेन नामृष्यत परंतपः।' गाङ्गेयमुपसंगम्य विनयेनाभिवाद्य च
In that great tumult, King Duryodhana, scorched by defeat at the hands of the Rakshasa, could not endure it; approaching Bhishma with humility, he offered his respects.
तस्य सर्वं यथावृत्तमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे। घटोत्कचस्य विजयमात्मनश्च पराजयम्
He began to recount everything as it had happened—the victory of Ghatotkaca and his own defeat.
कथयामास दुर्धर्षो विनिःश्वस्य पुनःपुनः । अब्रवीच्च तदा राजन्भीष्मं कुरुपितामहम्
Breathing heavily again and again, the formidable one spoke, and then addressed Bhishma, the grandsire of the Kurus.
भवन्तं समुपाश्रित्य द्रोणं चैव पितामह । पाण्डवैर्विग्रहो घोरः समारब्धो मया प्रभो
"Relying on you and Drona, O Grandsire, I have undertaken this terrible conflict with the Pandavas, O Lord.
एकादश समाख्याता अक्षौहिण्यश्च या मम। निदेशे तव तिष्ठन्ति मया सार्धं परंतप
"Eleven akshauhinis, which are mine, have been assembled; they stand under your command, together with me, O scorcher of foes.
सोऽहं भरतशार्दूल भीमसेनपुरोगमैः । घटोत्कचं समाश्रित्य पाण्डवैर्युधि निर्जितः
O tiger among the Bharatas, I, together with Bhimasena at the forefront, relying on Ghatotkacha, was defeated in battle by the Pandavas.
तन्मे दहति गात्राणि शुष्कवृक्षमिवानलः । तदिच्छामि महाभाग त्वत्प्रसादात्परंतप
That burns my limbs like fire consumes a dry tree; O greatly fortunate one, I desire, by your grace, to overcome this.
राक्षसापशदं हन्तुं स्वयमेव पितामह । त्वां समाश्रित्य दुर्धर्षं तन्मे कर्तुं त्वमर्हसि
I wish, O mighty-armed one, to slay that Rakshasa's offspring myself, relying on you, O unconquerable one; you should grant me this.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं राज्ञो भरतसत्तम। दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यं भीष्मः शान्तनवोऽब्रवीत्
Hearing these words of the king, O best of the Bharatas, Bhishma, son of Shantanu, spoke these words to Duryodhana.
शृणु राजन्मम वचो यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि कौरव। यथा त्वया महाराज वर्तितव्यं परंतप
Hear my words, O king, which I shall speak to you, O Kaurava; how you, O scorcher of foes, should conduct yourself, O great king.
आत्मा रक्ष्यस्त्वया तात सर्वावस्थास्वरिन्दम। धर्मराजेन संग्रामस्त्वया कार्यः सदाऽनघ
You must always protect yourself, O son, in every situation, O subduer of enemies; you must always fight righteously with Yudhishthira, O sinless one.
अर्जुनेन यमाभ्यां वा भीमसेनेन वा पुनः । अन्यैर्वा पृथिवीपालै राजा राजानमृच्छति
Whether by Arjuna, by the twins, by Bhimasena, or again by other kings, a king meets another king in battle.
न तु कार्यस्त्वया राजन्हैडिम्बेन दुरात्मा। अहं द्रोणः कृपो द्रौणिः कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः। शल्यश्च वृषसेनश्च विकर्णश्च महारथः
But you, O king, must not fight with Hidimba's evil-natured son; I, Drona, Kripa, Drona's son, Kritavarma of the Satvata clan, Shalya, Vrishasena, and Vikarna the great chariot-warrior—
शेषाश्च भ्रातरस्त्वन्ये दुःशासनपुरोगमाः। त्वदर्थे प्रतियोत्स्यामो राक्षसं तं महाबलम्
And the rest of your brothers, led by Duhshasana, will contend with that mighty Rakshasa for your sake.
रौद्रे तस्मिन्राक्षसेन्द्रे यदि ते हृच्छयो महान् । अयमागच्छतु रणं तस्य युद्धाय दुर्मतेः
If you have a great desire in your heart, O king, to face that fierce lord of the Rakshasas, let him come to battle with this wicked one.
भगदत्तो महीपालः पुरन्दरसमो युधि । एतावदुक्त्वा राजानं भगदत्तमथाब्रवीत्
Bhagadatta, the king, equal to Indra in battle—having said this, he then addressed King Bhagadatta.
समक्षं पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः। गच्छ शीघ्रं महाराज हैडिम्बं युद्धदुर्मदम्
In the presence of the king of kings, the eloquent one said: 'Go swiftly, O great king, against Hidimba's son, who is mad for battle.'
