तं प्रत्यविध्यद्दशभिर्भीमसेनः शिलीमुखैः । त्वरमाणो महेष्वासः सव्ये पार्श्वे महाबलः
Bhimasena, the mighty archer, quickly pierced him back with ten sharp arrows on his left side.
स गाढविद्धो व्यथितो वयोवृद्धश्च भारत। प्रनष्टसंज्ञः सहसा रथोपस्थ उपाविशत्
Deeply wounded, pained, and advanced in years, O Bharata, he suddenly lost consciousness and sat down in his chariot.
गुरुं प्रव्यथितं दृष्ट्वा राजा दुर्योधनः स्वयम् । द्रौणायनिश्च संक्रुद्धौ भीमसेनमभिद्रुतौ
Seeing his teacher distressed, King Duryodhana himself, together with Drona’s son, both enraged, rushed toward Bhimasena.
तावापतन्तौ संप्रेक्ष्य कालान्तकयमोपमौ । भीमसेनो महाबाहुर्गदामादाय सत्वरम्
Beholding those two advancing, resembling Death and Time’s end, mighty-armed Bhimasena swiftly seized his mace.
अवप्लुत्य रथात्तूर्णं तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः। समुद्यम्य गदां गुर्वी यमदण्डोपमां रणे
Leaping quickly from his chariot, he stood firm like a mountain, raising his heavy mace in battle, resembling Yama’s staff.
तमुद्यतगदं दृष्ट्वा कैलासमिव शृङ्गिणम्। कौरवो द्रोणपुत्रश्च सहितावभ्यधावताम्
Seeing him with mace upraised, like Kailasa with its peak, the Kaurava and Drona’s son together charged at him.
तावापतन्तौ सहितौ त्वरितौ बलिनां वरौ। अभ्यधावत वेगेन त्वरमाणो वृकोदरः
Those two, united and swift, foremost among the strong, rushed forward, and Vrikodara hastened to meet them with speed.
तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य संक्रुद्धं भीमदर्शनम् । समभ्यधावंस्त्वरिताः कौरवाणां महारथाः
Seeing him advancing, enraged and dreadful to behold, the great chariot-warriors of the Kauravas hurriedly rushed to confront him.
भारद्वाजमुखाः सर्वे भीमसेनजिघांसया । नानाविधानि शस्त्राणि भीमस्योरस्यपातयन्
All, led by Bharadvaja, desiring to slay Bhimasena, hurled various kinds of weapons at Bhima’s chest.
सहिताः पाण्डवं सर्वे पीडयन्तः समन्ततः। तं दृष्ट्वा संशयं प्राप्तं पीड्यमानं महारथम्
All together surrounded the Pandava, pressing him from all sides; seeing that great chariot-warrior beset and in danger,
अभिमन्युप्रभृतयः पाण्डवानां महारथाःक । अभ्यदावन्परीप्सन्तः प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा सुदुस्त्यजान्
Abhimanyu and the other great chariot-warriors of the Pandavas, seeking to rescue him, rushed forward, ready to give up even their most precious lives.
अनूपाधिपतिः शूरो भीमस्य दयितः सखा । नीलो नीलाम्बुदप्रख्यः संक्रुद्धो द्रौणिमभ्यात्
The brave lord of the Anupas, Bhima’s dear friend Nila, dark as a raincloud, enraged, charged at Drona’s son.
स्पर्धते हि महेष्वासो नित्यं द्रोणसुतेन सः। स विष्फार्य महच्चापं द्रौणिं विव्याध पत्रिणा
That mighty archer always contended with Drona’s son; stringing his great bow, he struck Drona’s son with a feathered arrow.
यथा शक्रो महाराज पुरा विव्याध दानवम् । विप्रचित्तिं दुराधर्षं देवतानां भयंकरम्
Just as, O King, Indra once struck the formidable Danava Vipracitti, who was a terror to the gods and hard to subdue,
येन लोकत्रयं क्रोधात्रासितं स्वेन तेजसाक । `स रुद्रेण जितः पूर्वं निहतो मातरिश्वना' तथा नीलेन निर्भिन्नः सम्यङ्भुक्तेन पत्रिणा
By whose own power the three worlds were once shaken with fear and anger—he was formerly defeated by Rudra and slain by the Wind-god; in the same way, Nila pierced Drona’s son with a well-aimed arrow.
संजातरुधिरोत्पीडो द्रौणिः क्रोधसमन्वितः । स विष्फार्य धनुश्चित्रमिन्द्राशनिसमस्वनम्
Drona’s son, his body streaming with blood and filled with rage, drew his splendid bow, which thundered like Indra’s bolt.
दध्रे नीलविनाशाय मतिं मतिमतां वरः। ततः संधाय विमलान्भल्लान्कर्मारमार्जितान्
That foremost of the wise resolved to destroy Nila; then, fitting pure, well-forged arrows to his bow,
जघान चतुरो वाहान्पातयामास च ध्वजम्। `सूतं चैकेन भल्लेन रथनीडादपाहरत्' सप्तमेन च भल्लेन नीलं विव्याध वक्षसि
He struck down four horses and felled the banner; with one arrow he cast down the charioteer from the chariot, and with a seventh arrow he pierced Nila in the chest.
स गाढविद्धो व्यथितो रथोपस्थ उपाविशत्। मोहितं वीक्ष्य राजानं नीलमश्मचयोपमम्
Severely wounded, Nila, tormented, sat down on the floor of his chariot; seeing Nila, like a mass of stone, bewildered,
घटोत्कचोऽभिसंक्रुद्धो ज्ञातिभिः परिवारितः । अभिदुद्राव वेगेन द्रौणिमाहवशोभिनम् । तथेतरे चाभ्यधावन्राक्षसा युद्धदुर्मदाः
Ghatotkacha, greatly enraged and surrounded by his kin, rushed swiftly at Drona’s son, resplendent in battle; likewise, other Rakshasas, intoxicated by war, also charged.
भीमसेनो महाबाहुर्नीलं नीलाञ्जनप्रभम्।' आरोप्य स्वरथं वीरो दुर्योधनमपाद्रवत्
Bhimasena, mighty-armed, the hero, set the dark-hued, collyrium-glowing Nila upon his own chariot and rushed toward Duryodhana.
घटोत्कचं च संप्रेक्ष्य राक्षसं घोरदर्शनम् ।। अभ्यधावत तेजस्वी भारज्वाजात्मजस्त्वरन्
Beholding Ghatotkaca, the Rakshasa of terrifying appearance, the radiant son of Bhima swiftly charged forward.
निजघान च संक्रुद्धो राक्षसान्भीमदर्शनान्। योऽभवन्नग्रतः क्रुद्धा राक्षसस्य पुरःसराः । विमुखांश्चैव तान्दृष्ट्वा द्रौणिचापच्युतैः शरैः
In great anger, he struck down the fearsome Rakshasas who stood at the front as Ghatotkaca’s vanguard, and seeing them turn away, he pierced them with arrows loosed from Drona’s bow.
अक्रुद्ध्यत महाकायो भैमसेनिर्घटोत्कचः। प्रादुश्चक्रे ततो मायां घोररूपां सुदारुणाम्
Then Ghatotkaca, son of Bhima, massive in form, was not enraged; instead, he unleashed a dreadful and terrible illusion.
मोहयन्समरे द्रौणिं मायावी राक्षसाधिपः। ततस्ते तावकाः सर्वे मायया विमुखीकृताःक
The lord of the Rakshasas, master of illusion, bewildered Drona’s son in battle; and by his illusion, all your troops were confounded.
अन्योन्यं समपश्यन्त निकृत्ता मेदिनीतले। विचेष्टमानाः कृपणाः शोणितेन परिप्लुताः
On the ground, they saw each other as enemies, pitiful, writhing, and drenched in blood.
द्रोणं दुर्योधनं शल्यमश्वत्थामानमेव च। प्रायशश्च महेष्वासा ये प्रधानाः स्म कौरवाः
Drona, Duryodhana, Shalya, Ashvatthaman, and most of the great bowmen who were the chief Kauravas—
विध्वस्ता रथिनः सर्वे गजाश्च विनिपातिताः। हयाश्चैव हयारोहाः सन्निकृत्ताः सहस्रशः
All the chariot-warriors were scattered, the elephants were felled, and the horses and their riders were cut down by the thousands.
तद्दृष्ट्वा तावकं सैन्यं विद्रुतं शिबिरं प्रति। मम प्राक्रोशतो राजंस्तथा देवव्रतस्य च
Seeing your army fleeing toward the camp, O King, both I and Devavrata cried out.
युध्यध्वं मा पलायध्वं मायैषा राक्षसी रणे। घटोत्कचप्रमुक्तेति नातिष्ठन्त विमोहिताः
"Fight! Do not flee! This is but a Rakshasa illusion in battle, released by Ghatotkaca!" But bewildered, they did not stand firm.
