O king, your son Duryodhana did not falter; then, enraged, with bloodshot eyes, he spoke to him harshly.
Today I will repay my debts to my ancestors and to my mother, for whom you, with your cruelty, exiled for a long time.
And when, O king, the Pandavas were defeated by you in a deceitful game of dice, and when Draupadi, Krishna, was brought into the assembly, clad in a single garment and menstruating,
O wicked-minded one, you brought her into the hall and tormented her in many ways; and, out of desire to please you, the ascetics were also tormented by you, evil-hearted one.
Insulted by the Sindhu king, who has dishonored my ancestors, this wretch among families has brought disgrace upon both them and others.
Today I will bring about his end, unless you abandon the battle; having spoken thus, the son of Hidimba drew his great bow with a thunderous sound.
Gnashing his lips with his teeth and licking the corners of his mouth, he showered Duryodhana with a great volley of arrows, like a raincloud pouring on a mountain in the monsoon.
Then, that rain of arrows—unbearable even for demons—was withstood in battle by the king, like a mighty elephant enduring a downpour.
Then, filled with rage and breathing hard like a serpent, your son, O bull of the Bharatas, reached the utmost extremity.
He released twenty-five sharp and keen iron arrows, which swiftly fell upon that foremost of Rakshasas.
Struck by them, like enraged serpents on Mount Gandhamadana, he bled, like a wounded elephant streaming blood.
That flesh-eater resolved upon the king's destruction, and seized a great spear capable of splitting even mountains.
Blazing like a great meteor, shining like a flaming thunderbolt, the mighty-armed one advanced, intent on killing your son.
Seeing that weapon raised, the king of the Vangas quickly urged his elephant, massive as a mountain, against the Rakshasa.
Mounted on that foremost, swift, and powerful elephant, he blocked the path of Duryodhana's chariot.
With his elephant, he barred the way of your son; seeing the path blocked by the wise king of the Vangas—
Ghatotkacha, O great king, his eyes reddened with rage, hurled that great spear at the elephant.
Struck by that spear, hurled by his arm, the elephant bled profusely, fell down, and died.
Then, as the elephant fell, the mighty lord of the Vangas leapt swiftly to the ground.
Duryodhana, seeing the noble elephant fallen and his forces shattered, was seized by intense anguish.
Unable to fight back after witnessing his valor, yet upholding the warrior's code and his own pride, the king stood firm like an immovable mountain, though retreat was at hand.
Then Radha's son, enraged, aimed a sharp arrow—blazing like the fire of destruction—at that dreadful night-stalker.
Seeing that blazing weapon, shining like Indra's thunderbolt, rushing toward him, the great-souled Ghaṭotkaca swiftly released himself.
With eyes reddened by anger, he roared again, terrifying the enemy ranks like a storm cloud at the end of an age.
Hearing that dreadful roar of Bhīma’s son, the Rākṣasa, Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, approached the teacher and spoke.
Just as this terrible roar is heard, surely the Rākṣasa Hāidimba is fighting with the king and with Duryodhana.
In battle, he cannot be defeated by any being; so go quickly, may you fare well, to protect the king.
Having rushed upon the mighty-armed one, oppressed by the Rākṣasa—this, O scorcher of foes, is the highest duty for all of us.
Hearing the grandsire’s words, the great chariot-warriors, hastening and taking up their utmost speed, went to where the Kaurava was.
Droṇa, Somadatta, Bāhlīka, Jayadratha, Kṛpa, Bhūriśravā, Śalya, the Avanti king, and Bṛhadbala—
