Thereupon King Duryodhana, as the sun reddened, spoke to all your men, saying, 'Be swift!'
युध्यतां तु तथा तेषां कुर्वतां कर्म दुष्करम्। अस्तं गिरिमथारूढे अप्रकाशति भास्करे
As they fought on, performing difficult deeds, the sun, having reached the mountain, ceased to shine.
प्रावर्तत नदी घोरा शोणितौघतरङ्गिणी । गोमायुगणसंकीर्णा क्षणेन क्षणदामुखे
A dreadful river began to flow, its waves formed of streams of blood, filled with packs of jackals, at the onset of night.
शिवाभिरशिवाभिश्च रुवद्भिर्भैरवं रवम्। घोरमायोधनं जज्ञे भूतसङ्घैः समाकुलम्
With auspicious and inauspicious beings howling with a terrible sound, a fierce battle arose, crowded with hosts of spirits.
राक्षसाश्च पिशाचाश्च तथान्ये पिशिताशिनः । समन्ततो व्यदृश्यन्त शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः
Rakshasas and Pisachas, and other flesh-eating beings, appeared on all sides by the hundreds and thousands.
अर्जुनोऽथ सुशर्मादीन्राज्ञस्तान्सपदानुगान्। विजित्य पृतनामध्ये ययौ स्वशिबिरं प्रति
Then Arjuna, having defeated kings like Susharma and their followers in the midst of the army, went towards his own camp.
युधिष्टिरोऽपि कौरव्यो भ्रातृभ्यां सहितस्तथा। ययौ स्वशिबिरं राजा निशायां सेनया वृतः
Yudhishthira too, the Kaurava king, together with his brothers and surrounded by his army, went to his own camp at night.
भीमसेनोऽपि राजेन्द्र दुर्योधनमुखान्रथान् । अवजित्य ततः सङ्ख्ये ययौ स्वशिबिरं प्रति
Bhimasena also, O king, having vanquished Duryodhana and his chariot warriors in battle, then went towards his own camp.
दुर्योधनोऽपि नृपतिः परिवार्य महारणे। भीष्मं शान्तनवं तूर्णं प्रयातः शिबिरं प्रति
Duryodhana too, the king, having surrounded Bhishma, son of Shantanu, in the great battle, quickly went towards the camp.
द्रोणो द्रौणिः कृपः शल्यः कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः । परिवार्य चमूं सर्वाः प्रययुः शिबिरं प्रति
Drona, Drona's son, Kripa, Shalya, and Kritavarma the Satvata, having gathered all the troops, went towards the camp.
तथैव सात्यकी राजन्धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः। परिवार्य रणे योधान्ययतुः शिबिरं प्रति
Likewise, O king, Satyaki and Dhrishtadyumna the son of Prishata, having gathered the warriors in battle, went towards the camp.
एवमेते महाराज तावकाः पाण्डवैः सह। पर्यवर्तन्त सहिता निशाकाले परंतप
Thus, O great king, your men and the Pandavas, united, withdrew together at night, scorcher of foes.
ततः स्वशिबिरं गत्वा पाण्डवाः कुरवस्तथा । न्यवसन्त महाराज पूजयन्तः परस्परम्
Then, O King, the Pandavas and the Kurus returned to their own camps and dwelled there, honoring each other.
रक्षां कृत्वा ततः शूरा न्यस्य गुल्मान्यथाविधि। अपनीय च शल्यानि स्नात्वा च विविधैर्जलैः
Having arranged for protection, the valiant ones stationed their troops as prescribed, removed their arrows, and bathed with various waters.
कृतस्वस्त्ययनाः सर्वे स्तूयमानाश्च बन्दिभिः । गीतवादित्रशब्देन व्यक्रीडन्त यशस्विनः
All performed auspicious rites and, praised by bards, played joyfully to the sound of songs and instruments.
मुहूर्तादिव तत्सर्वमभवत्स्वर्गसन्निभम् । न हि युद्धकथां कांचित्तत्राकुर्वन्महारथाः
For a moment, everything there became like heaven; the great warriors did not speak at all of battle.
ते प्रसुप्ते बले तत्र परिश्रान्तजने नृप । हस्त्यश्वबहुले रात्रौ प्रेक्षणीये बभूवतुः
When the army slept there, O King, with the people exhausted, the night—filled with elephants and horses—became a sight to behold.
परिणाम्य निशां तां तु सुखसुप्ता जनेश्वराः। कुरवः पाण्डवाश्चैव पुनर्युद्धाय निर्ययुः
When that night had passed, the rulers of men, the Kurus and the Pandavas, having slept well, went out again to battle.
ततः शब्दो महानासीत्सेनयोरुभयोर्नृप । निर्गच्छमानयोः सङ्ख्ये यथा सागरयोरिव
Then, O King, a great sound arose from both armies as they marched out to the field, like the roar of two oceans.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा चित्रसेनो विविंशतिः। भीष्मश्च रथिनां श्रेष्ठो भारद्वाजश्च वै द्विजः
Then King Duryodhana, Citraseṇa, Vivimshati, Bhishma the foremost of chariot-warriors, and Bharadvaja the brahmin,
एकीभूताः सुसंयत्ताः कौरवाणां महाचमूम् । व्यूहाय विदधू राजन्पाण्डवान्प्रतिदंशितान्
United and well-prepared, they arrayed the great Kaurava army in formation, O King, eager to oppose the Pandavas.
कूर्मव्यूहं ततः कृत्वा पिता तव विशांपते । सागरप्रतिमं घोरं वाहनोर्मितरङ्गिणम्
Then your father, O lord of men, formed the army into the tortoise formation, vast and terrible as the ocean, with vehicles surging like waves.
अग्रतः सर्वसैन्यानां भीष्मः शान्तनवो ययौ । मालवैर्दाक्षिणात्यैश्च आवन्त्यैश्च समन्वितः
At the head of all the troops went Bhishma, son of Shantanu, accompanied by the Malavas, Dakshinatya, and Avanti warriors.
ततोऽनन्तरमेवासीद्भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान । पुलिन्दैः पारदैश्चैव तथा क्षुद्रकमालवैः
Immediately after him came the mighty Bharadvaja, with Pulindas, Paradas, and also Kshudraka and Malava warriors.
द्रोणादनन्तरं यत्तो भगदत्तः प्रतापवान् । मगधैश्च कलिङ्गैश्च पिशाचैश्च विशांपते
After Drona, the valiant Bhagadatta advanced, accompanied by Magadhas, Kalingas, and Pisachas, O lord of men.
प्राग्ज्योतिषादनु नृपः कौसल्योऽथ बृहद्बलः । मेकलैः कुरुविन्दैश्च त्रैपुरैश्च समन्विताः
After the ruler of Pragjyotisha came the king of Kosala, Brihadbala, with Mekalas, Kuruvindas, and warriors from Tripura.
बृहद्बलादनु नृपस्त्रिगर्तः प्रस्थलाधिपः। काम्भोजैर्बहुभिः सार्धं यवनैश्च सहस्रशः
After Brihadbala came the king of Trigarta, lord of Prasthala, with many Kambojas and thousands of Yavanas.
द्रौणिस्तु रभसः शूरस्त्रैगर्तादनु भारत। प्रययौ सिंहनादेन नादयानो धरातलम्
Then Drona's son, the impetuous and valiant Ashvatthama, advanced from the Trigarta side, roaring like a lion across the earth.
तथा सर्वेण सैन्येन राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा। द्रौणेरनन्तरं प्रायात्सोदर्यैः परिवारितः
In the same way, King Duryodhana advanced with his entire army after Drona's son, surrounded by his brothers.
दुर्योधनादनु ततः कृपः शारद्वतो ययौ। एवमेष महाव्यूहः प्रययौ सागरोपमः
After Duryodhana, Kripa, son of Sharadvat, advanced; thus, this great formation, vast as the ocean, set forth.
