पूर्णां हस्तिगवाश्वैश्च बहुरत्नसमाकुलाम्। ममज्जेव मही तस्य भूरिभारावपीडिता
The earth, filled with elephants, cows, horses, and abundant with many jewels, was heavily burdened under his rule.
हस्त्यश्वरथसंपूर्णा मनुष्यकलिला भृशम्। सुहोत्रे राजनि तदा धर्मतः शासति प्रजाः
The land was crowded with elephants, horses, chariots, and throngs of people; at that time, King Suhotra governed his subjects righteously.
चैत्ययूपाङ्किता चासीद्भूमिः शतसहस्रशः। प्रवृद्धजनसस्या च सर्वदैव व्यरोचत
The earth was marked everywhere with sacrificial posts by the hundreds of thousands, and always shone with abundant people and crops.
ऐक्ष्वाकी जनयामास सुहोत्रात्पृथिवीपतेः। अजमीढं सुमीढं च पुरुमीढं च भारत
From Suhotra, the king, the Ikshvaku princess bore Ajamidha, Sumidha, and Purumidha, O Bharata.
अजमीढो वरस्तेषां तस्मिन्वंशः प्रतिष्ठितः। षट् पुत्रान्सोप्यजनयत्तिसृषु स्त्रीषु भारत
Ajamidha was the best among them; in him the lineage was established. He begot six sons from three wives, O Bharata.
ऋक्षं धूमिन्यथो नीली दुष्यन्तपरमेष्ठइनौ। केशिन्यजनयज्जह्नुं सुतौ च जनरूषिणौ
Riksha, Dhūmin, Nīlī, Duṣyanta, Parameshthin, and Keśin—he begot Jahnu and two sons called Janarūshi.
विदुः संवरणं वीरमृक्षाद्राथन्तरीसुतम्। तथेमे सर्वपञ्चाला दुष्यन्तपरमेष्ठिनोः। अन्वयाः कुशिका राजञ्जन्होरमिततेजसः
From Riksha was born the heroic Samvarana, son of Rathantara; all the Panchalas are known as descendants of Duṣyanta and Parameshthin, and the Kuśikas, O king, are the line of the mighty Janhu.
जनरूषणयोर्ज्येष्ठमृक्षमाहुर्जनाधिपम्। ऋक्षात्संवरणो जज्ञे राजन्वंशकरस्तव
Among Janarūsha's sons, Riksha is said to be the eldest and king; from Riksha was born Samvarana, the progenitor of your line, O king.
आर्क्षे संवरणे राजन्प्रशासति वसुन्धराम्। संक्षयः सुमहानासीत्प्रजानामिति नः श्रुतम्
When Samvarana, son of Riksha, ruled the earth, O king, a great destruction of people occurred, as we have heard.
व्यशीर्यत ततो राष्ट्रं क्षयैर्नानाविधैस्तदा। क्षुन्मृत्युभ्यामनावृष्ट्या व्याधिभिश्च समाहतम्
Then the kingdom was shattered by various calamities—famine, death, drought, and diseases afflicted it.
अभ्यघ्नन्भारतांश्चैव सपत्नानां बलानि च। चालयन्वसुधां चेमां बलेन चतुरङ्गिणा
They struck at the Bharatas and also at the forces of their rivals, shaking this earth with their fourfold army.
अभ्ययात्तं च पाञ्चल्यो विजित्य तरसा महीम्। अक्षौहिणीभिर्दशभिः स एनं समरेऽजयत्
Then the Panchala princess, having conquered the earth by force, advanced against him with ten divisions, and defeated him in battle.
ततः सदारः सामात्यः सपुत्रः ससुहृज्जनः। राजा संवरणस्तस्मात्पलायत महाभयात्

Defeated, the Bharatas went to the western direction and dwelled in a thicket by the great river Sindhu, at the edge of the river and near the mountain.
तत्रावसन्बहून्कालान्भारता दुर्गमाश्रिताः। तेषां निवसतां तत्र सहस्रं परिवत्सरान्
There, the Bharatas took refuge in that difficult place and lived for many years, dwelling there for a thousand years.
अथाभ्यगच्छद्भरतान्वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः। तमागतं प्रयत्नेन प्रत्युद्गम्याभिवाद्य च
Then the venerable sage Vasishtha came to the Bharatas; they went out to meet him with care and greeted him.
अर्घ्यमभ्याहरंस्तस्मै ते सर्वे भारतास्तदा। निवेद्य सर्वमृषये सत्कारेण सुवर्चसे
All the Bharatas then offered him water for hospitality, and respectfully informed the illustrious sage of everything.
तमासने चोपविष्टं राजा वव्रे स्वयं तदा। पुरोहितो भवान्नोऽस्तु राज्याय प्रयतेमहि
When he was seated on a seat, the king himself requested him: 'Be our priest, so that we may strive for the kingdom.'
ओमित्येवं वसिष्ठोऽपि भारतान्प्रत्यपद्यत। अथाभ्यषिञ्चत्साम्राज्ये सर्वक्षत्रस्य पौरवम्
Vasishtha replied, 'Om,' and accepted the Bharatas; then he anointed the Paurava as emperor over all the Kshatriyas.
विषाणभूतं सर्वस्यां पृथिव्यामिति नः श्रुतम्। भरताध्युषितं पूर्वं सोऽध्यतिष्ठत्पुरोतोतमम्
We have heard that he ruled from the foremost city, which was like a horn on the earth, previously inhabited by Bharata.
पुनर्बलिभृतश्चैव चक्रे सर्वमहीक्षितः। ततः स पृथिवीं प्राप्य पुनरीजे महाबलः
Once again, he subdued the tribute-bearers, all the kings of the earth; thus, having regained the earth, the mighty one performed sacrifices.
आजमीढो महायज्ञैर्बहुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः। ततः संवरणात्सौरी तपती सुषुवे कुरुम्
Ajamīḍha performed many great sacrifices with abundant gifts; then from Samvarana, Sūrya's daughter Tapati bore Kuru.
राजत्वे तं प्रजाः सर्वा धर्मज्ञ इति वव्रिरे। `महिम्ना तस्य कुरवो लेभिरे प्रत्ययं भृशम्।' तस्य नाम्नाऽभिविख्यातं पृथिव्यां कुरुजाङ्गलं
All the people chose him as king, knowing him to be righteous; by his greatness, the Kurus gained great confidence, and the land Kurujangala became renowned by his name.
कुरुक्षेत्रं स तपसा पुण्यं चक्रे महातपाः। अश्ववन्तमभिष्यन्तं तथा चैत्ररथं मुनिम्
Through his austerity, the great ascetic made Kurukshetra a holy place; likewise, he consecrated Ashvavat and the sage Chaitraratha.
जनमेजयं च विख्यातं पुत्रांश्चास्यानुशुश्रुम। पञ्चैतान्वाहिनी पुत्रान्व्यजायत मनस्विनी
We have heard of his famous son Janamejaya and his other sons; the noble lady bore these five sons for him.
अविक्षितः परिक्षित्तु शबलाश्वस्तु वीर्यवान्। आदिराजो विराजश्च शाल्मलिश्च महाबलः
Avikṣita, Parikṣit, the powerful Śabalāśva, Ādirāja, Virāja, and the mighty Śālmali.
उच्चैःश्रवा भङ्गकारो जितारिश्चाष्टमः स्मृतः। एतेषामन्ववाये तु ख्यातास्ते कर्मजैर्गुणैः। जनमेजयादयः सप्त तथैवान्ये महारथाः
Uccaiḥśravā, Bhaṅgakāra, and Jitāri are known as the eighth; among their descendants, Janamejaya and others, seven in all, and other great chariot-warriors, became renowned for their deeds.
परीक्षितोऽभवन्पुत्राः सर्वे धर्मार्थकोविदाः। कक्षसेनोग्रसेनौ तु चित्रसेनश्च वीर्यवान्
All the sons of Parikṣit were skilled in righteousness and wealth; Kakṣasena, Ugrasena, and the mighty Citraseṇa.
इन्द्रसेनः सुषेणश्च भीमसेनश्च नामतः। जनमेजयस्य तनया भुवि ख्याता महाबलाः
Indrasena, Sushena, and Bhimasena by name—these sons of Janamejaya, renowned on earth, were of great strength.
धृतराष्ट्रः प्रथमजः पाण्डुर्बाह्लीक एव च। निषधश्च महातेजास्तथा जाम्बूनदो बली
Dhritarashtra was the eldest, Pandu and Bahlika as well; also Nishadha, of great energy, and likewise Jambunada, powerful.
