स गाढविद्धो व्यथितो रथोपस्थे महारथः । निषसाद महाराज कश्मलं च जगाम ह
Struck deeply and afflicted, the mighty charioteer sat down in his chariot, O King, and fell into confusion.
तं विसंज्ञं निपतितं सूतः संप्रेक्ष्य संयुगे। अपोवाह रथेनाजौ यमाभ्यामभिपीडितम्
Seeing him unconscious and fallen in battle, his charioteer carried him away from the field, overwhelmed by the sons of Yama.
दृष्ट्वा मद्रेश्वररथं धार्तराष्ट्राः पराङ्भुखम्। सर्वे विमनसो भूत्वा नेदमस्तीत्यचिन्तयन्
Seeing the Madra king's chariot turned away, the Dhārtarāṣṭras became despondent; all thought, 'This cannot be.'
निर्जित्य मातुलं सङ्ख्ये माद्रीपुत्रौ महारथौ । दध्यतुर्मुदितौ शङ्खौ सिंहनादं च नेदतुः
Having conquered their maternal uncle in battle, the mighty sons of Mādrī, rejoicing, sounded their conches and roared like lions.
अभिदुद्रुवतुर्हृष्टौ तव सैन्यं विशांपते । यथा दैत्यचमूं राजन्निन्द्रोपेन्द्राविवामरौ
Joyful, they rushed toward your army, O lord of men, like Indra and Upendra charging against the host of demons, O King.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा मध्यं प्राप्ते दिवाकरे। श्रुतायुपमभिप्रेक्ष्य प्रेषयामास वाजिनः
Then King Yudhishthira, as the sun reached its zenith, gazed at Śrutāyu and sent forth his steeds.
ततस्तु त्वरितो राजञ्श्रुतायुषमरिन्दमन् । निजघ्ने सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैर्नवभिर्नतपर्वभिःक
Then, hastening, O King, the destroyer of foes struck Śrutāyu with nine sharp arrows having polished shafts.
स संवार्य रमे राजा प्रेषितान्धर्मसूनुना । शरान्सप्त महेष्वासः कौन्तेयाया समार्षयत्
He, restraining himself in battle, the great archer, repelled the seven arrows sent by the son of Dharma.
ते तस्व कवचं भित्त्वा पपुः शोणितमाहवे। असूनिव विचिन्वन्तो देहे तस्य महात्मनः
They pierced his armor in the battle and drank his blood, as if seeking his very life within the body of that great-souled one.
पाण्डवस्तु भृशं क्रुद्धो विद्धस्तेन महात्मना । रणे वराहकर्णेन राजानं हृद्यविध्यता
But the son of Pandu, greatly enraged and wounded by that great-souled one with a boar-tusked arrow, struck the king in the heart during the battle.
अथापरेण भल्लेन केतुं तस्य महात्मनः । रथश्रेष्ठो रथात्तूर्णं भूमौ पार्थो न्यपातयत्
Then with another broad-headed arrow, Arjuna, the foremost of charioteers, swiftly struck down the banner of that great-souled king from his chariot to the ground.
केतु निपतितं दृष्ट्वा श्रुतायुः स तु पार्थिवः । पाण्डवं विशिखैतीक्ष्णै राजन्विव्याध सप्तभिः
Seeing his banner fallen, Shrutayus, that king, pierced the Pandava with seven sharp arrows, O King.
ततः क्रोघात्प्रजज्वल धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः । यथा युगान्ते भूतानि दिधक्षुरिव पावकः
Then, inflamed with wrath, Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, blazed forth like fire wishing to consume all beings at the end of an age.
क्रुद्धं तु पाण्डवं दृष्ट्वा देवगन्धर्वराक्षसाः । प्रविव्यधुर्महाराज व्याकुलं जाप्यभूज्जगत्
Seeing the Pandava enraged, the gods, Gandharvas, and Rakshasas became agitated, O great king, and the world was filled with confusion and tumult.
सर्वेषां चैव भूतानामिदमासीन्मनोगतम् । त्रींल्लोकान्म संक्रुद्धो नृपोऽयं धक्ष्यतीति वै
And in the minds of all beings, this thought arose: 'If this king, in his fury, is not checked, he will burn up the three worlds.'
ऋष..... देवाश्च चक्रुः स्वस्त्ययनं महत्। लोकानां नृपाशान्त्यर्थं क्रोधिते पाण्डवे तदा
The sages and the gods performed great rites of blessing for the peace of the worlds, when the Pandava was enraged.
स च क्रोधसमाविष्टः सृक्विणी परिसंलिहन । इवारात्सवपुर्घोरं युगान्तादित्यसन्निभम्
He, seized by wrath, licking the corners of his mouth, appeared terrifying in form, like the sun at the end of an age.
ततः सैन्यानि सर्वाणि तावकानि विशांपते । निराशान्यभवंस्तत्र जीवितं प्रति भारत
Then, O lord of men, all your armies there became hopeless regarding their lives, O Bharata.
स तु धैर्येण तं कोपं सन्निवार्य महायशाः । श्रुतायुषः प्रचिच्छेद मुष्टिदेशे महाधनुः
But that illustrious one, restraining his anger with fortitude, cut off the great bow of Shrutayus at the grip.
अथैनं छिन्नधन्वानं नाराचेन स्तनान्तरे । निर्बिभेद रणे राजा सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः
Then, as all the army looked on, the king pierced him, whose bow was cut, in the chest with a razor-sharp arrow in battle.
सत्वरं च रणे राजंस्तस्य वाहान्महात्मनः । निजघान शरैः क्षिप्रं सूतं च सुमहाबलः
Swiftly in battle, the mighty king struck down the horses of that great-souled one with arrows, and also his powerful charioteer.
हताश्वं तु रथं त्यक्त्वा दृष्ट्वा राज्ञोऽस्य पौरुषम् । विप्रदुद्राव वेगेन श्रुतायुः समरे तदा
Seeing his horses slain and his chariot abandoned, and witnessing the king's prowess, Shrutayus fled swiftly from the battle at that time.
तस्मिञ्जिते महेष्वासे धर्मपुत्रेण संयुगे। दुर्योधनबलं राजन्सर्वमासीत्पराङ्भुखम्
When that great archer was defeated in battle by the son of Dharma, O king, all the forces of Duryodhana turned their faces in flight.
एवं जित्वा महाराज धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः । व्यात्ताननो यथा कालस्तव सैन्यं जघान ह
Thus, having conquered, O great king, Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, with mouth agape like Time itself, struck down your army.
चेकितानस्तु वार्ष्णेयो गौतमं रथिनां वरम् । प्रेक्षतां सर्वसैन्यानां छादयामास सायकैः
But Chekitana, the Vrishni hero, covered Kripa, the foremost of chariot-warriors, with arrows before the eyes of all the armies.
संनिवार्य शरांस्तांस्तु कृपः शारद्वतो युधि। चेकितानां रणे यत्तं राजन्विव्याध पत्रिभिः
Repelling those arrows in battle, Kripa, son of Sharadvat, wounded the valiant Chekitana with shafts, O king.
अथापरेण भल्लेन धनुश्चिच्छेद मारिष । सारथिं चास्य समरे क्षिप्रहस्तो न्यपातयत्
Then, O great one, with another arrow he cut down the bow, and with swift hands struck down his charioteer in battle.
अश्वांस्छास्यावधीद्राजन्नुभौ तौ पार्ष्णिसारथी । अवप्लुत्य रथात्तूर्णं गदां जग्राह सात्वतः
He also killed his horses, O King, both the driver at the rear and the charioteer; leaping quickly from the chariot, the Sātvata seized his mace.
स तया वीरघातिन्या गदया गदिनां वरः । गौतमस्य हयान्हत्वा सारथिं च न्यपातयत्
With that hero-slaying mace, the foremost of mace-wielders struck down Gautama’s horses and felled his charioteer.
भूमिष्ठो गौतमस्तस्य शरांश्चिक्षेप षोडशक । शरास्ते सात्वतं भित्त्वा प्राविशन्धरणीतलम्
Standing on the ground, Gautama released sixteen arrows at him; those arrows, piercing the Sātvata, entered the earth.
