Then the mighty Rākṣasa lord Hidimba's son rushed at Bhagadatta with his chariot, shining like the sun and bearing a banner.
Then the king of Prāgjyotiṣa mounted his serpent-king, just as the wielder of the thunderbolt once did in the battle against Tāraka.
There, the gods with the Gandharvas and sages assembled, yet they could not distinguish between Hidimba and Bhagadatta.
Just as Indra, lord of the gods, once routed the Dānavas, so did the king drive the Pāṇḍavas to flight in battle.
Driven back on all sides by him, O Bhārata, the Pāṇḍavas found no protector among their own ranks.
But there we saw Bhīmasena’s son standing on his chariot, O Bhārata, while the other great chariot-warriors, disheartened, fled.
When the Pāṇḍava troops had retreated, O Bhārata, a dreadful tumult arose again in your army during the battle.
Then, O king, Ghaṭotkaca covered Bhagadatta in the great battle with arrows, as a cloud covers Mount Meru.
The king, striking down those arrows loosed from the Rākṣasa’s bow, swiftly wounded Bhīmasena’s son at all his vital points in battle.
Though struck by many arrows with sharp heads, the Rākṣasa did not waver, like a mountain being battered.
Then the enraged king of Prāgjyotiṣa hurled fourteen spears in battle, but the Rākṣasa cut them down.
Having cut down those mighty spears with sharp arrows, the strong-armed one struck Bhagadatta with seventy winged shafts.
Then the king of Prāgjyotiṣa, as if laughing, O Bhārata, struck down his four horses in the fight with arrows.
Standing on his chariot with his horses slain, the mighty Rākṣasa lord hurled his spear with force at Bhagadatta’s elephant.
The king swiftly cut that golden-shafted, speeding spear into three as it rushed upon him, and it scattered upon the earth.
Seeing his spear destroyed, Hidimba’s son fled in fear, just as Namuci, best of Daityas, once fled from Indra in battle.
Having conquered that valiant, mighty, and renowned hero in battle—one unconquerable even by Yama or Varuṇa—the king prevailed.
That elephant crushed the Pāṇḍava army in battle, O king, as a wild elephant tramples a lotus pond.
But the king of Madra, matched in battle by the two sons of Yama, covered the sons of Pāṇḍu with showers of arrows, along with his wives.
But Sahadeva, seeing his maternal uncle joined in battle, blocked him with a torrent of arrows, as a cloud covers the sun.
Covered by a shower of arrows, he became even more delighted in appearance; and between the two, there arose an incomparable affection due to their maternal connection.
Then, laughing in battle, the mighty charioteer of Nakula cut down his banner with an arrow, and with another, O Māriṣa, he broke his bow.
Then, O Bhārata, as his bow was broken, he was enveloped by arrows; and in battle, he struck down his charioteer and caused him to fall.
Then, forcefully in battle, the mighty charioteer of Nakula, O King, slew his four horses with four excellent arrows.
He sent them, in battle, toward the abode of Yama; and with his horses slain, the mighty charioteer swiftly leapt down from his chariot.
Then he mounted the vehicle of his illustrious brother; and the two heroes stood together in battle, firmly wielding their bows.
Together, they quickly covered the chariot of the Madra king in an instant; and he, being covered by many arrows with well-polished shafts,
That tiger among men, with his own kinsmen, did not tremble, like a mountain; and, as if laughing, he destroyed that shower of weapons.
Then Sahadeva, enraged, and possessing great valor, took up an arrow; gazing at the Madra king, he dispatched it, O Bhārata.
That arrow, sent by him, swift as Garuda and the wind, pierced the Madra king and fell to the earth.
