अथापरेण भल्लेन सुयुक्तेनाशुपातिना। दुष्कर्णं नाकुलिः क्रुद्धो विव्याध हृदये भृशम्
Then, with another well-feathered, swiftly-flying broad-headed arrow, the enraged Nakuli pierced Dushkarna deeply in the heart.
स पपात ततो भूमौ वज्राहत इव द्रुमः । दुष्कर्णं व्यथितं दृष्ट्वा पञ्च राजन्महारथाः

दिघांसन्तः शतानीकं सर्वतः पर्यवारयन्। छाद्यमानं शरव्रतैः शतानीकं यशस्विनम्
Rushing forward, they surrounded Shatanika on all sides, covering the renowned Shatanika with volleys of arrows.
अभ्यधावन्त संक्रुद्धाः केकयाः पञ्च सोदराः । तानभ्यापततः प्रेक्ष्य तव पुत्रा महारथाः
The five Kekaya brothers, enraged, charged forward. Seeing them advancing, your sons, the great chariot-warriors—
प्रत्युद्ययुर्महाराज गजानिव महागजाः । दुर्मुखो दुर्जयश्चैव तथा दुर्मर्षणो युवा
O great king, moved out to meet them, like mighty elephants confronting others: Durmukha, Durjaya, and the young Durmarshana.
शत्रुंजयः सत्रुसहः सर्वे क्रुद्धा यशस्विनः । प्रत्युद्याता महाराज केकयान्भ्रातरः समम्
Shatrunjaya and Shatrusaha—all renowned, all enraged—advanced together to confront the Kekaya brothers, O king.
रथैर्नगरसंकाशैर्हयैर्युक्तैर्मनोजवैः । नानावर्णविचित्राभिः पताकाभिरलङ्कृतैः
With chariots like moving fortresses, yoked to swift horses, adorned with many-colored, splendid banners.
शरचापधरा वीरा विचित्रकवचध्वजाः । विविशुस्ते परं सैन्यं सिंहा इव वनाद्वनम्
Bearing bows and arrows, heroic, with varied armor and standards, they entered the opposing army like lions into a forest.
तेषां सुतुमुलं युद्धं व्यतिषक्तरथद्विपम्। अवर्तत महारौद्रं निघ्नतामितरेतरम्
Among them, a tumultuous battle arose, with chariots and elephants intermingled, fierce and dreadful, as they struck each other down.
अन्योन्यागस्कृतां राजन्यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनम् । मुहूर्तास्तमिते सूर्ये चक्रुर्युद्धं सुदारुणम्
Committing mutual offenses, the kings, enhancers of their realms, fought a most terrible battle as the sun set for a moment.
रथिनः सादिनश्चाथ व्यकीर्यन्त सहस्रशः । ततः शान्तनवः क्रुद्धः शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः
Then chariot-warriors and horsemen were scattered by the thousands. Thereupon, the enraged son of Shantanu, with arrows tipped like razors—
नाशयामास सेनां तां भीष्मस्तेषां महात्मनाम् । पञ्चालानां च सैन्यानि शरैर्निन्ये यमक्षयम्

एवं भित्त्वा महेष्वासः पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम्। कृत्वाऽवहारं सैन्यानां ययौ स्वशिबिरं नृप

नाशयामासतुर्वीरौ धृष्टद्युम्नवृकोदरौ। करवाणामनीकानि शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः
Then the two heroes, Dhrishtadyumna and Vrikodara, destroyed the Karava divisions with arrows tipped like razors.
धर्मराजोऽपि संप्रेक्ष्य धृष्टद्युम्नवृकोदरौ । मूर्ध्नि चैतावुपाघ्राय प्रहृष्टः शिबिरं ययौ
King Yudhishthira, seeing Dhrishtadyumna and Bhima, joyfully embraced them by touching their heads and then proceeded to the camp.
अर्जुनो वासुदेवश्च कौरवाणामनीकिनीम् ।' हत्वा विद्राव्य च शरैः शिबिरायैव जग्मतुः
Arjuna and Vasudeva, having struck and scattered the Kaurava army with arrows, went directly to their camp.
क्षत्रियास्ते महाराज परस्परकृतागसः। जग्मुः स्वशिबिराण्येव रुधिरेण समुक्षिताः
Those Kshatriyas, O great king, stained by mutual offenses, returned to their own camps, covered in blood.
विश्रम्य च यथान्यायं पूजयित्वा परस्परम् । सन्नद्धाः समदृश्यन्त भूयो युद्धचिकीर्षवः
After resting as appropriate and honoring each other, they appeared once more, fully armed, eager for battle.
ततस्तव सुतो राजंश्चिन्तयाभिपरिप्लुतः । विस्रवच्छोणिताक्ताङ्गः पप्रच्छेदं पितामहम्
Then your son, O king, overwhelmed by anxiety, his limbs smeared with flowing blood, questioned the grandsire.
सैन्यानि रौद्राणि भयानकानि व्यूढानि सम्यग्बहुलध्वजानि। विदार्य हत्वा च निपीड्य शूरां- स्ते पाण्डवा लब्धजयाः प्रहृष्टाः
The armies, fierce and terrifying, well arrayed with many banners, were torn apart, struck, and oppressed by heroes; thus the Pandavas, having gained victory, rejoiced.
संमोह्य सर्वान्युधि कीर्तिमन्तो व्यूहं च तं मकरं मृत्युकल्पम् । प्रविश्य भीमेन रणे हतोऽस्मि घोरैः शरैर्मृत्युदण्डप्रकाशैः
Having bewildered all in battle, the renowned ones entered that makara formation, dreadful as death; there, I was struck down by Bhima with terrible arrows, shining like the rod of death.
क्रुद्धं तमुद्वीक्ष्य भयेन राज- न्संमूर्च्छितो न लभे शान्तिमद्य । इच्छे प्रसादात्तव सत्यसन्ध प्राप्तुं जयं पाण्डवेयांश्च हन्तुम्
Seeing him enraged, O king, I am overcome with fear and cannot find peace today; I desire, by your favor and truthfulness, to attain victory and slay the Pandavas.
तेनैवमुक्तः प्रहसन्महात्मा दुर्योधनं मन्युगतं विदित्वा। तं प्रत्युवाचाविमना मनस्वी गङ्गासुतः सस्त्रभृतां वरिष्ठः
Thus addressed, the great-souled one, perceiving Duryodhana's anger, laughed and replied to him, the wise son of Ganga, foremost among weapon-bearers.
परेण यत्नेन विगाह्य सेनां सर्वात्मनाऽहं तव राजपुत्र। इच्छामि दातुं विजयं सुखं च न चात्मानं छादयेऽहं त्वदर्थे
With utmost effort, O prince, I penetrate the army for your sake; I wish to grant you victory and happiness, nor do I conceal myself for your benefit.
एते तु रौद्रा बहवो महारथा यशस्विनः शूरतमाः कृतास्त्राः । ये पाण्डवानां समरे सहाया जितक्लमा रोषविषं वमन्ति
But here are many fierce, renowned, and heroic great chariot-warriors, skilled in weapons, who aid the Pandavas in battle, having overcome fatigue and pouring forth the venom of wrath.
केनेह शक्याः सहसा विजेतुं वीर्योद्धताः कृतवैरास्त्वया च। अहं ह्येतान्प्रतियोत्स्यामि राज- न्सर्वात्मना जीवितं त्यज्य वीर
By whom could these, bold in strength and made your enemies, be suddenly conquered here? Yet, O king, I will oppose them with all my might, forsaking life, O hero.
रणे तवार्थाय महानुभाव न जीवितं रक्षितव्यं ममाद्य। सर्वांस्तवार्थाय सदेवदैत्याँ- ल्लोकान्दहेयं किमु शत्रुसेनाम्
For your sake in battle, O mighty one, I must not preserve my life today; for your sake, I would burn all worlds with gods and demons—what then of the enemy's army?
तान्पाण्डवान्योधयिष्यामि राजन् प्रियं च ते सर्वमहं करिष्ये
I will fight the Pandavas, O king, and I will do everything that pleases you.
सर्वाणि सैन्यानि ततः प्रहृष्टो निर्गच्छतेत्याह नृपांश्च सर्वान्। तदाक्षया तानि विनिर्ययुर्द्रुतं गजाश्वपादातरथायुतानि
Then, delighted, he ordered all the kings: 'Let all the armies march forth!' And those inexhaustible forces quickly went out, filled with elephants, horses, foot soldiers, and chariots.
प्रहर्षयुक्तानि तु तानि राज- न्महान्ति नानाविधशस्त्रवन्ति। स्थितानि नागाश्वपदातिमन्ति विरेजुराजौ तव राजन्बलानि
Those great armies, O king, filled with joy and bearing various weapons, stood with elephants, horses, and infantry; your forces shone brilliantly, O king.
