अथाभिमन्युः समरे भीमसेनेन संगतः । पार्षतेन च ते सर्वे कैकया द्रौपदीसुताः
Then Abhimanyu joined Bhimasena in battle, along with Parshata, all the Kaikeyas, and the sons of Draupadi.
तादृष्ट्वा समरे क्रुद्धांस्तव सैन्ये महारथाः। दुर्योधनप्रभृतयः प्रगृहीतशरासनाः। भृशमर्श्वैः प्रजवितैः प्रययुर्यत्र ते रथाः
Seeing them enraged in battle, O king, the great chariot-warriors in your army, led by Duryodhana, seized their bows and, with swift horses, rushed toward those chariots.
अपराह्णे महाराज प्रावर्तत महारणः। तावकानां च बलिनां परेषां चैव भारत
In the afternoon, O king, a great battle began between your powerful forces and those of the enemy, O Bharata.
अभिमन्युर्विकर्णस्य हयान्हत्वा महाहवे। अथैनं पञ्चविंशत्या क्षुद्रकाणां समार्पयत्
Abhimanyu, in the great battle, slew the horses of Vikarṇa; then he sent him twenty-five inferior steeds.
हताश्वं रथमुत्सृज्य विकर्णस्तु महारथः । आरुरोह रथं राजंश्चित्रसेनस्य भारत । योधयामास समरे तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Abandoning his chariot with slain horses, Vikarṇa, the great chariot-warrior, climbed onto Citraseṇa’s chariot, O Bharata, and fought in battle, which seemed wondrous.
स्थितावेकरथे तौ तु भ्रातरौ कुलवर्धनौ। आर्जिनिः शरजालेन च्छादयामास भारत
Those two brothers, enhancers of their lineage, stood together on one chariot; Arjini covered them with a shower of arrows, O Bharata.
चित्रसेनो विकर्णश्च कार्ष्णिं पञ्चभिरायसैः । विव्यधाते न चाकम्पत्कार्ष्णिर्मेरुरिव स्थितः
Citraseṇa and Vikarṇa struck the son of Kṛṣṇa with five iron arrows, but he did not waver, standing firm like Mount Meru.
दुःशासनस्तु समरे केकयान्पञ्च मारिप । योधयामास राजेन्द्र तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Duḥśāsana, in battle, fought with the five Kekaya brothers, O king; it was wondrous to behold.
द्रौपदेया रणे क्रुद्धा दुर्योधनमवारयन् । शरैराशीविषाकारैः पुत्रं तव विशांपते
The sons of Draupadi, enraged in battle, blocked Duryodhana, your son, O lord of people, with arrows shaped like venomous serpents.
पुत्रोऽपि तव दुर्धर्षो द्रौपद्यास्तनयान्रणे । सायकैर्निशितै राजन्नाजघान पृथक्पृथक्
Your son, difficult to defeat, O king, struck the sons of Draupadi separately in battle with sharp arrows.
तैश्चापि विद्धः शुशुभे रुधिरेम समुक्षितः । गिरिः प्रस्रवणैर्यद्वद्गैरिकादिविमिश्रितैः
Struck by them, he shone, drenched in blood, like a mountain with streams mingled with red ochre.
भीष्मोऽपि समरे राजन्पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् । कालयामास बलवान्पालः पशुगणानिव
Bhishma also, O king, in battle, attacked the Pandava army with great strength, as a herdsman drives a flock of cattle.
ततो गाण्डीवनिर्घोषः प्रादुरासीद्विशांपते । दक्षिणेन वरूथिन्याः पार्थस्यरीन्विनिघ्नतः
Then, O lord of the people, the sound of Gandiva arose from the southern flank, as Partha struck down his enemies.
उत्तस्थुः समरे तत्र कबन्धानि समन्ततः। कुरूणां चैव सैन्येषु पाण्डवानां च भारत
There, on the battlefield, headless bodies rose up all around, in the armies of both the Kurus and the Pandavas, O Bharata.
शोणितोदं शरावर्तं गजद्वीपं हयोर्मिणम् । रथनौभिर्नरव्याघ्राः प्रतेरुः सैन्यसागरम्
With blood for water, arrows for waves, elephants as islands, and horses as billows, tiger-like warriors crossed the ocean of armies in their chariot-ships.
छिन्नहस्ता विकवचा विदेहाश्च नरोत्तमाः । दृश्यन्ते पतितास्तत्र शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः
There, best of men, hundreds and thousands lay fallen—hands severed, armor shattered, and lifeless.
निहतैर्मत्तमातङ्गैः शोणितौघपरिप्लुतैः । भूर्भाति भरतश्रेष्ठ पर्वतैराचिता यथा
The earth, O best of Bharatas, shone as if piled with mountains, covered by slain, intoxicated elephants drenched in streams of blood.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम तव तेषां च भारत । न तत्रासीत्पुमान्कश्चिद्यो युद्धं नाभिकाङ्क्षति
There, O Bharata, we saw a wonder: not a single man was found who did not desire battle.
एवं युयुधिरे वीराः प्रार्थयाना महद्यशः। तावकाः पाण्डवैः सार्धमाकाङ्क्षन्तो जयं युधि
Thus the heroes fought, seeking great fame, your men and the Pandavas alike, each longing for victory in battle.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा लोहितायति भास्करे। संग्रामरभसो भीमं हन्तुकामोऽभ्यधावत
Then King Duryodhana, as the sun reddened, charged in the fury of battle, eager to slay Bhima.
तमायान्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य नृवीरं दृढवैरिणम् । भीमसेनः सुसंक्रुद्ध इदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Seeing that warrior, steadfast in enmity, advancing, Bhimasena, greatly enraged, spoke these words:
अयं स कालः संप्राप्तो वर्षपूगाभिवाञ्छितः । अद्य त्वां निहनिष्यामि यदि नोत्सृजसे रणम्
This is the moment long awaited through many years; today I will kill you, unless you flee the field.
अद्य कुन्त्याः परिक्लेशं वनवासं च कृत्स्नशः। द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं प्रणेष्यामि हते त्वयि
Today, when you are slain, I will end all the suffering and exile of Kunti, and the hardship of Draupadi.
यत्पुरा मत्सरीभूत्वा पाण्डवानवमन्यसे । तस्य पापस्य गान्धारे पश्य व्यसनमागतम्
O Gandhari's son, see now the ruin that has come for your past wickedness, when, driven by envy, you scorned the Pandavas.
कर्णस्य मतमास्थाय सौबलस्य च यत्पुरा । अचिन्त्य पाण्डवान्कामाद्यथेष्टं कृतवानसि
Following the counsel of Karna and Saubala, you acted as you wished, heedless of the Pandavas, out of desire.
याचमानं च यन्मोहाद्दाशार्हमवमन्यसे। उलूकस्य समादेशं यद्ददासि च हृष्टवत्
In your delusion, you scorned Krishna when he pleaded, and you gladly accepted Uluka's message.
तेन त्वां निहनिष्यामि सानुबन्धं सबान्धवम् । शमीकरिष्ये तत्पापं यत्पुरा कृतवानसि
For all this, I will slay you, along with your kin and followers, and put an end to the evil you once committed.
एवमुक्त्वा धनुर्घोरं विकृष्योद्भ्राम्य चासकृत् । समाधत्त शरान्घोरान्महाशनिसमप्रभान्
Having spoken thus, he drew his terrible bow, whirled it repeatedly, and set fierce arrows shining like thunderbolts.
षड्विंशतिमसं क्रुद्धो मुमोचाशु सुयोधने । ज्वलिताग्निशिखाकारान्वज्रकल्पानजिह्मगान्
In his wrath, he swiftly released twenty-six arrows at Suyodhana, blazing like tongues of fire, straight as thunderbolts.
ततोऽस्य कार्मुकं द्वाभ्यां सूतं द्वाभ्यां च विव्यधे । चतुर्भिरश्वाञ्जवनाननयद्यमसादनम्
Then with two arrows he struck his bow, with two more his charioteer, and with four he sent Duryodhana's swift horses toward the abode of Yama.
