तत्प्रभग्नं बलं दृष्ट्वा द्रोणेनामिततेजसा । नाशक्रुवन्वारयितुं समस्तास्ते महारथाः
Seeing their force shattered by Drona's immeasurable energy, all the great warriors were unable to restrain him.
वध्यमानं तु तत्सैन्यं द्रोणेन निशितैः शरैः । व्यभ्रमत्तत्रतत्रैव क्षोभ्यमाण इवार्णवः
That army, being struck down by Drona's sharp arrows, scattered here and there, like a disturbed ocean.
तथा दृष्ट्वा च तत्सैन्यं जहृषे तावकं बलम् । दृष्ट्वाचार्यं सुसंक्रुद्धं तपन्तं रिपुवाहिनीम् । तुष्टुवुः सर्वतो योधाः साधुसाध्विति भारत
Seeing their army thus, the Kaurava forces rejoiced; beholding the teacher fiercely scorching the enemy host, all the warriors everywhere praised him, saying, 'Well done, well done,' O Bharata.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा महोत्प्रत्यागतस्मृतिः । शरवर्षैः पुनर्भीमं प्रत्यवारयदच्युतम्
Then King Duryodhana, his memory restored, again checked Bhima with a shower of arrows, O faultless one.
एकीभूतास्ततश्चैव तव पुत्रा महारथाः । समेत्य समरे भीमं योधयामासुरुद्यताः
Then your sons, the great warriors, united together, approached in battle and fought Bhima with determination.
भीमसेनोऽपि समरे संप्राप्य स्वरथं पुनः । समारुह्य महाबाहुर्ययौ येन तवात्मजः
Bhimasena, too, in battle, having regained his own chariot, ascended it with mighty arms and advanced toward your son.
प्रगृह्य च महावेगं परासुकरणं दृढम् । सज्यं शरासनं सङ्ख्ये शरैर्विव्याध ते सुतम्
Grasping his strong, swift, and formidable bow, strung for battle, he pierced your son with arrows.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा भीमसेनं महाबलम् । नाराचेन सुतीक्ष्णेन भृशं मर्मण्यताडयत्
Then King Duryodhana struck mighty Bhimasena with a very sharp arrow, fiercely wounding him in the vital parts.
सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासस्तव पुत्रेण धन्विना । क्रोधसंरक्तनयनो वेगेनाक्षिप्य कार्मुकम्
Pierced deeply by your son, the great archer, Bhimasena's eyes reddened with rage, and he swiftly drew his bow.
दुर्योधनं त्रिभिर्बाणैर्बाह्वोरुरसि चार्पयत् । स तत्र शुशुभे राजा शिखरैर्गिरिराडिव
He struck Duryodhana with three arrows on his arms and thighs; there the king shone like a mountain with its peaks.
तौ दष्ट्वा समरे क्रुद्धौ विनिघ्नन्तौ परस्परम् । दुर्योधनानुजाः सर्वे शूराः संत्यक्तजीविताः
Seeing those two, enraged in battle and striking each other, all Duryodhana's valiant brothers resolved to lay down their lives.
संस्मृत्य मन्त्रितं पूर्वं निग्रहे भीमकर्मणः । निश्चयं परमं कृत्वा निग्रहीतुं प्रचक्रमुः
Remembering their earlier counsel to subdue Bhima's deeds, they made a firm resolve and set out to restrain him.
तानापतत एवाजौ भीमसेनो महाबलः । प्रत्युद्ययौ महाराज गजः प्रतिगजानिव
As they rushed forward in battle, mighty Bhimasena confronted them, O king, like an elephant against other elephants.
भृशं क्रुद्धश्च तेजस्वी नाराचेन समार्पयत् । चित्रसेनं महाराज तव पुत्रं महायशाः
Greatly enraged and radiant, he struck your illustrious son Citrashena with a sharp arrow, O king.
तथेतरांस्तव सुतांस्ताडयामास भारत । शरैर्बहुविधैः सङ्ख्ये रुक्मपुङ्खैः सुतेजनैः
In the same way, O Bharata, your sons were struck in battle with many kinds of arrows, their shafts tipped with gold and expertly crafted.
ततः संप्रेक्ष्य पुत्रैस्ते भीमसेनं समावृतम् । अभिमन्युप्रभृतयस्ते द्वदश महारथाः
Then, seeing Bhimasena surrounded by your sons, those twelve great chariot-warriors led by Abhimanyu gathered together.
प्रेषिता धर्मराजेन भीमसेनपदानुगाः । प्रतिजग्मुर्महाराज तव पुत्रान्महाबलान्
Sent by King Yudhishthira, those who followed Bhimasena’s path, O great king, advanced to confront your mighty sons.
दृष्ट्वा रथस्थांस्ताञ्शूरान्सूर्याग्निसमतेजसः । सर्वानेव महेष्वासान्भ्राजमानाञ्श्रिया वृतान्
Beholding those heroes standing on their chariots, radiant as the sun and fire, all great bowmen, shining with splendor and surrounded by glory,
महाहवे दीष्यमानान्सुवर्णमकुटोञ्ज्वलान्। तत्यजुः समरे भीमं तव पुत्रा महाबलाः
In the great battle, your mighty sons, adorned with blazing golden crowns, fiercely attacked Bhima on the field.
तान्नामृष्यत कौन्तेयो जीवमाना गता इति । अन्वीय च पुनः सर्वांस्तव पुत्रानपीडयत्
The son of Kunti could not endure seeing them alive and departed; again he pursued and afflicted all your sons.
अथाभिमन्युः समरे भीमसेनेन संगतः । पार्षतेन च ते सर्वे कैकया द्रौपदीसुताः
Then Abhimanyu joined Bhimasena in battle, along with Parshata, all the Kaikeyas, and the sons of Draupadi.
तादृष्ट्वा समरे क्रुद्धांस्तव सैन्ये महारथाः। दुर्योधनप्रभृतयः प्रगृहीतशरासनाः। भृशमर्श्वैः प्रजवितैः प्रययुर्यत्र ते रथाः
Seeing them enraged in battle, O king, the great chariot-warriors in your army, led by Duryodhana, seized their bows and, with swift horses, rushed toward those chariots.
अपराह्णे महाराज प्रावर्तत महारणः। तावकानां च बलिनां परेषां चैव भारत
In the afternoon, O king, a great battle began between your powerful forces and those of the enemy, O Bharata.
अभिमन्युर्विकर्णस्य हयान्हत्वा महाहवे। अथैनं पञ्चविंशत्या क्षुद्रकाणां समार्पयत्
Abhimanyu, in the great battle, slew the horses of Vikarṇa; then he sent him twenty-five inferior steeds.
हताश्वं रथमुत्सृज्य विकर्णस्तु महारथः । आरुरोह रथं राजंश्चित्रसेनस्य भारत । योधयामास समरे तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Abandoning his chariot with slain horses, Vikarṇa, the great chariot-warrior, climbed onto Citraseṇa’s chariot, O Bharata, and fought in battle, which seemed wondrous.
स्थितावेकरथे तौ तु भ्रातरौ कुलवर्धनौ। आर्जिनिः शरजालेन च्छादयामास भारत
Those two brothers, enhancers of their lineage, stood together on one chariot; Arjini covered them with a shower of arrows, O Bharata.
चित्रसेनो विकर्णश्च कार्ष्णिं पञ्चभिरायसैः । विव्यधाते न चाकम्पत्कार्ष्णिर्मेरुरिव स्थितः
Citraseṇa and Vikarṇa struck the son of Kṛṣṇa with five iron arrows, but he did not waver, standing firm like Mount Meru.
दुःशासनस्तु समरे केकयान्पञ्च मारिप । योधयामास राजेन्द्र तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Duḥśāsana, in battle, fought with the five Kekaya brothers, O king; it was wondrous to behold.
द्रौपदेया रणे क्रुद्धा दुर्योधनमवारयन् । शरैराशीविषाकारैः पुत्रं तव विशांपते
The sons of Draupadi, enraged in battle, blocked Duryodhana, your son, O lord of people, with arrows shaped like venomous serpents.
पुत्रोऽपि तव दुर्धर्षो द्रौपद्यास्तनयान्रणे । सायकैर्निशितै राजन्नाजघान पृथक्पृथक्
Your son, difficult to defeat, O king, struck the sons of Draupadi separately in battle with sharp arrows.
