न्मोहोपेतांस्तव पुत्रान्निशम्य
Hearing that your sons were overcome by delusion,
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु भीमः प्रहरतां वरः। विश्रम्य च तदा राजन्पीत्वाऽमृतरसं जलम्
At that very moment, Bhima, the foremost among fighters, rested, O King, and drank water with the taste of nectar.
पुनः सन्नह्य संक्रुद्धो योधयामास संयुगे। धृष्टद्यम्नेन सहितः कालयामास भारत
Then, having armed himself again and enraged, he fought in battle, together with Dhrishtadyumna, and began to destroy, O Bharata.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे राजन्द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः। द्रुपदं त्रिभिरासाद्य शरैर्विव्याध दारुणैः
Meanwhile, O King, Drona, the foremost among weapon-bearers, approached Drupada and struck him with three harsh arrows.
सोऽतिविद्धस्ततो राजन्रणे द्रोणेन पार्थिवः । अपायाद्द्रुपदो राजन्पूर्ववैरमनुस्मरन्
Thus, pierced excessively by Drona in battle, King Drupada withdrew, recalling their former enmity.
जित्वा तु द्रुपदं द्रोणः शङ्खं दध्मौ प्रतापवान् । तस्य शङ्खस्वनं श्रुत्वा वित्रेसुः सर्वसोमकाः
Having defeated Drupada, Drona, full of prowess, blew his conch; hearing its sound, all the Somakas were terrified.
अथ शुश्राव तेजस्वी द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः। प्रमोहनास्त्रेण रणे मोहितानात्मजांस्तव
Then the radiant Drona, foremost among weapon-bearers, heard that your sons had been bewildered in battle by the Pramohana weapon.
ततो द्रोणो महाराज त्वरितोऽभ्याययौ रणात्। तत्रापश्यन्महेष्वासो भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान्
Thereupon, O King, Drona hastily came from the battlefield; there, the mighty-armed Bharadvaja, full of prowess, beheld.
धृष्टद्युम्नं च भीमं च विचरन्तौ महारणे । मोहाविष्टांश्च ते पुत्रानपश्यत्स महारथः
That great chariot-warrior saw Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Bhīma roaming the great battlefield, and your sons, seized by delusion.
ततः प्रज्ञांस्त्रमदाय मोहनास्त्रं व्यनाशयत् । ततः प्रत्यागतप्राणास्तव पुत्रा महारथाः
Then, taking up the weapon that dispels confusion, he destroyed the weapon of stupefaction; thereafter, your great chariot-warrior sons regained their senses.
पुनर्युद्धाय समरे प्रत्युद्याता जिगीषवः । ततो युधिष्ठिरः प्राह समाहूय स्वसैनिकान्
Once more, eager for victory, they advanced to battle; then Yudhiṣṭhira, summoning his soldiers, spoke.
गच्छन्तु पदवीं शक्त्या भीमपार्षतयोर्युधि। सौभद्रप्रमुखा वीरा रथा द्वादश दंशिताः
Let the heroes, with Abhimanyu at their head, twelve chariot-warriors in all, go with all their might to follow the path of Bhīma and Dhṛṣṭadyumna in battle.
प्रवृत्तिमधिगच्छन्तु न हि शुद्ध्यति मे मनः । प्रवृत्तिर्भिमसेनस्य पार्षतस्य च संयुगे
Let them learn what is happening, for my mind is not at ease; I wish to know the situation of Bhīmasena and Dhṛṣṭadyumna in the fight.
विज्ञेया समरे शीघ्रं प्रविशध्वं रथार्णवम् । गच्छन्तु परया शक्त्या भवन्त इति मे मतिः
Quickly ascertain the situation in the battle; enter the ocean of chariots with utmost strength—this is my decision.
त एवं समनुज्ञाताः शूरा विक्रान्तयोधिनः । बाढमित्येवमुक्त्वा तु सर्वे पुरुषमानिनः । मध्यंदिनगते सूर्ये प्रययुः सर्व एव हि
Thus instructed, those valiant and mighty warriors, all proud men, replied, 'So be it!' and, as the sun reached midday, they all set out.
केकया द्रौपदेयाश्च धृष्टकेतुश्च वीर्यवान् । अभिमन्युं पुरस्कृत्य महत्या सेनया वृताः
The Kekayas, the sons of Draupadī, and the mighty Dhṛṣṭaketu, with Abhimanyu at their head, set forth, surrounded by a great army.
ते कृत्वा समरे व्यूहं सूचीमुखमरिन्दमम् । बिभिदुर्धार्तराष्ट्राणां तद्रथानीकमाहवे
Forming in battle the needle-shaped array, invincible to foes, they broke through the chariot-division of the Dhārtarāṣṭras in the fight.
तान्प्रयातान्महेष्वासानभिमन्युपुरोगमान्। भीमसेनभयाविष्टा धृष्टद्युम्नविमोहिता
Seeing those great archers, led by Abhimanyu, advancing, the Kaurava troops were seized with fear of Bhīmasena and bewildered by Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
न संवारयितुं शक्ता तव सेना जनाधिप । मदमूर्च्छन्वितात्मा वै प्रमदेवाध्वनि स्थिता
Your army, O king, overcome by pride and confusion, like a careless woman on the road, was unable to restrain them.
तेऽभिजाता महेष्वासाः सुवर्णविकृतध्वजाः । परीप्सन्तोऽभ्यधावन्त धृष्टद्युम्रवृकोदरौ
Those noble great archers, their banners adorned with gold, rushed forward, seeking to reach Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Vṛkodara.
तौ च दृष्ट्वा महेष्वासावभिमन्युपुरोगमान् । बभूवतुर्मुदायुक्तौ निघ्नन्तौ तव वाहिनीम्
And seeing those great archers, with Abhimanyu at their head, Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Vṛkodara rejoiced as they struck down your army.
द्रोणमिष्वस्त्रकुशलं सर्वविद्यासु पारगम्।' दृष्ट्वा तु सहसायान्तं पाञ्चाल्यो गुरुमात्मनः । नाशंसत वधं वीरः पुत्राणां तव पार्षतः
But when the Pāñcāla prince saw Droṇa, master of weapons and all sciences, suddenly advancing—his own teacher—he did not expect your sons would be slain.
ततो रथं समारोप्य कैकेयस्य वृकोदरम् । अभ्यधावत्सुसंक्रुद्धो द्रोणमिष्वस्त्रपारगम्
Then, placing Vṛkodara on the chariot of the Kaikeya prince, the greatly enraged Pāñcāla rushed toward Droṇa, master of weapons.
तस्याभिपततस्तूर्णं भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान्। क्रुद्धश्चिच्छेद बाणेन धनुः शत्रुनिबर्हणः
As he swiftly advanced, the mighty Bhāradvāja, enraged, cut down his bow with an arrow, he who destroys enemies.
अन्यांश्च शतशो बाणान्प्रेषयामास पार्षते । दुर्योधनहितार्थाय भर्तृपिण्डमनुस्मरन्
And he sent hundreds of arrows at the Pāñcāla, remembering his duty to Duryodhana, mindful of his master's command.
अथान्यद्धनुरादाय पार्षतः परवीरहा । द्रोणं विव्याध विंशत्या रुक्मपुङ्खैः शिलाशितैः
Then, taking up another bow, the Pāñcāla, destroyer of enemy heroes, struck Droṇa with twenty gold-feathered, sharp-tipped arrows.
तस्य द्रोणः पुनश्चापं चिच्छेदामित्रकर्शनःक । हयांश्च चतुरस्तूर्णं चतुर्भिः सायकोत्तमैः
Then Drona, the scourge of his foes, again cut his bow, and swiftly struck his four horses with four excellent arrows.
वैवस्वतक्षयं घोरं प्रेषयामास भारत । सारथिं चास्य भल्लेन प्रेषयामास भारत
He sent forth a dreadful destruction, O Bharata, like that of Vaivasvata; and with a broad-headed arrow, he struck his charioteer as well.
हताश्वात्स रथात्तूर्णमवप्लुत्य महारथः । आरुरोह महाबाहुरभिमन्योर्महारथम्
From his chariot, whose horses were slain, that great warrior quickly leapt down, and with mighty arms ascended Abhimanyu's grand chariot.
ततः सरथनागाश्वा समकम्पत वाहिनी । पश्यतो भीमसेनस्य पार्षतस्य च पश्यतः
Then the army, with its chariots, elephants, and horses, trembled as Bhimasena and Parshata looked on.
