When Bhimasena had entered, Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Prishata, leaving Drona, swiftly went to where Vrikodara was.
Tearing through your great army, O bull among men, he reached the empty chariot of Bhimasena on the battlefield.
Seeing Vishoka, Bhimasena's charioteer, untroubled in the battle, King Dhrishtadyumna became despondent and lost in thought.
Choked with tears, sighing and barely able to speak, he sorrowfully asked, 'Where is Bhima, dearest to me as my own life?'
Vishoka, with joined palms, said to Dhrishtadyumna: 'The mighty and valiant son of Pandu stationed me here.'
'He entered this vast ocean of Dhritarashtra's army, O tiger among men, after saying these affectionate words to me.'
'Wait for me, charioteer, restrain the horses for a moment, until I slay those who today are intent on killing me.' Then that mighty one, mace in hand, charged at that army.
Then, seeing the powerful mace-wielder rushing forward, joy arose among all the troops.
In that fierce and dreadful battle, O King, your friend broke through the great formation and entered within.
Hearing Vishoka's words, Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Prishata, then addressed the charioteer in the midst of battle, full of might.
'For me, even life itself holds no purpose today, having abandoned Bhimasena in battle and set aside affection for the Pandavas.'
'If I go on without Bhima, what will the kshatriyas say of me, when Bhima has gone one way and I remain in the fight?'
'The gods, led by Indra, do not bless the one who, abandoning his companions, returns home safely.'
'He sinks into the hell called Raurava, impassable and dreadful for men. Bhima is my friend, my kinsman, mighty in strength; he is devoted to us, and I am devoted to him, that slayer of enemies.'
'Therefore, I will go where Vrikodara has gone. See me slay the enemies there, as Indra does the Danavas.'
Having spoken thus, the hero advanced through the midst of the army, along the paths where Bhimasena had crushed the elephants with his mace.
There he saw Bhima scorching the enemy forces, breaking the foes in battle with the force of the wind uprooting trees.
Those being slain in battle—chariot-warriors, horsemen, foot-soldiers, and elephant-riders—raised a great outcry.
A tumult of lament arose in your army, O best of men, as Bhimasena, the skilled and brilliant warrior, slaughtered them.
Then, all those who had mastered weapons surrounded Vrikodara, fearless, and confronted him with a shower of weapons, O scorcher of foes.
Seeing Bhimasena, the foremost among weapon-bearers, surrounded on all sides by the fierce and well-arrayed army, the heroic Parshata beheld him.
Then Parshata approached Bhimasena, whose body was wounded by arrows, who stood as an infantryman, spewing the venom of wrath, and comforted him, holding his mace like Death at the end of time.
He swiftly removed his arrows, placed him upon his own chariot, and, embracing Bhimasena firmly, reassured him amidst the enemy ranks.
As this was happening with great speed, your son, having approached his brothers, spoke these words upon seeing the fierce battle underway.
Here is the wicked son of Drupada, who has joined with Bhimasena.
Let us all attack him with great force, lest the enemy desire our army; hearing these words, the Dhartarashtras, unable to endure, advanced, urged by their eldest brother.
Armed for slaughter, they rushed out, their banners fierce as those at the end of an age; grasping weapons and bows, the warriors shook their bowstrings with thunderous sounds.
They showered arrows upon Drupada's son, as clouds pour water upon a mountain; yet, striking them down with sharp arrows, the illustrious warrior was undisturbed in battle.
Just as Mahendra does among the Daityas in battle.
Then the great-souled one, of noble deeds, employed the mighty and bewildering weapon given by Drona in that battle against your army, O King.
