मौसलं पर्व चोद्दिष्टं ततो घोरं सुदारुणम्। महाप्रस्थानिकं पर्व स्वर्गारोहणिकं ततः
The Mausala Parva is declared, then the dreadful and most terrible Mahāprasthānika Parva, and after that, the Svargārohaṇika Parva.
हरिवंशस्ततः पर्व पुराणं खिलसंज्ञितम्। विष्णुपर्व शिशोश्चर्या विष्णोः कंसवधस्तथा
Then comes the Harivaṃśa Parva, called the Purāṇa supplement, the Viṣṇu Parva, the wondrous deeds of the child, and also the slaying of Kaṃsa by Viṣṇu.
भविष्यं पर्व चाप्युक्तं खिलेष्वेवाद्भुतं महत्। एतत्पर्वशतं पूर्णं व्यासेनोक्तं महात्मना
The Bhaviṣya Parva is also mentioned among the supplements, a great and marvelous section; thus, the hundred Parvas are fully declared by the great-souled Vyāsa.
यथावत्सूतपुत्रेण रौमहर्षणिना ततः। उक्तानि नैमिशारण्ये पर्वाण्यष्टादशैव तु
As they were properly recited by Sūtaputra Romaharṣaṇa, so the eighteen Parvas were spoken in Naimiṣāraṇya.
समासो भारतस्यायमत्रोक्तः पर्वसंग्रहः। पौष्यं पौलोममास्तीकमादिरंशावतारणम्
Here is told the summary of the Bhārata, the collection of Parvas: Pauṣya, Pauloma, Āstīka, Ādi, Āṃśāvatāraṇa.
संभवो जतुवेश्माख्यं हिडिम्बबकयोर्वधः। तथा चैत्ररथं देव्याः पाञ्चाल्याश्च स्वयंवरः
The origin, the burning of the house of lac, the slaying of Hiḍimba and Baka, likewise the Citraratha episode, and the self-choice of Pāñcālī.
क्षात्रधर्मेण निर्जित्य ततो वैवाहिकं स्मृतम्। विदुरागमनं चैव राज्यलाभस्तथैव च
Having conquered by the warrior's code, then comes the Vaivāhika Parva, the coming of Vidura, and likewise the gaining of the kingdom.
वनवासोऽर्जुनस्यापि सुभद्राहरणं ततः। हरणाहरणं चैव दहनं खाण्डवस्य च
The exile of Arjuna in the forest, then the abduction of Subhadrā, the taking and retaking, and the burning of Khāṇḍava.
पौलोमे भृगुवंशस्य विस्तारः परिकीर्तितः। आस्तीके सर्वनागानां गरुडस्य च संभवः
In the Pauloma Parva, the lineage of Bhṛgu is extensively recounted; in the Āstīka Parva, the origin of all the serpents and of Garuḍa.
क्षीरोदमथं चैव जन्मोच्चैःश्रवसस्तथा। यजतः सर्पसत्रेण राज्ञः पारिक्षितस्य च
The churning of the ocean of milk, the birth of Uccaiḥśravas, and the king Pārikṣit's performance of the serpent sacrifice are also described.
कथेयमभिनिर्वृत्ता भारतानां महात्मनाम्। विविधाः संभवा राज्ञामुक्ताः संभवपर्वणि
This tale, accomplished, concerns the great-souled Bhāratas; the various origins of kings are told in the Saṃbhava Parva.
अन्येषां चैव शूराणामृषेर्द्वैपायनस्य च। अंशावतरणं चात्र देवानां परिकीर्तितम्
And also of other heroes, and of the sage Dvaipāyana; here too is recounted the descent of the gods.
दैत्यानां दानवानां च यक्षाणां च महौजसाम्। नागानामथ सर्पाणां गन्धर्वाणां पतत्त्रिणाम्
The origins of Daityas, Dānavas, and mighty Yakṣas, as well as Nāgas, serpents, Gandharvas, and birds are described.
अन्येषां चैव भूतानां विविधानां समुद्भवः। महर्षेराश्रमपदे कण्वस्य च तपस्विनः
And the various births of other beings, in the hermitage of the great sage Kaṇva, the ascetic.
शकुन्तलायां दुष्यन्ताद्भरतश्चापि जज्ञिवान्। यस्य लोकेषु नाम्नेदं प्रथितं भारतं कुलम्
From Duṣyanta and Śakuntalā was born Bharata, whose name became renowned in the worlds as the Bhārata lineage.
वसूनां पुनरुत्पत्तिर्भागीरथ्यां महात्मनाम्। शन्तनोर्वेश्मनि पुनस्तेषां चारोहणं दिवि
Again, the birth of the Vasus, the great-souled ones, in the Bhāgīrathī, and in the house of Śantanu, and then their ascent to heaven.
तेजोंशानां च संपातो भीष्मस्याप्यत्र संभवः। राज्यान्निवर्तनं तस्य ब्रह्मचर्यव्रते स्थितिः
The union of portions of energy, and here also the birth of Bhishma; his renunciation of the kingdom and steadfastness in the vow of celibacy.
प्रतिज्ञापालनं चैव रक्षा चित्राङ्गदस्य च। हते चित्राङ्गदे चैव रक्षा भ्रातुर्यवीयसः
And indeed, the keeping of his promise, and the protection of Chitrangada; and when Chitrangada was slain, the protection of his younger brother.
विचित्रवीर्यस्य तथा राज्ये संप्रतिपादनम्। धर्मस्य नृषु संभूतिरणीमाण्डव्यशापजा
Likewise, the enthronement of Vichitravirya, and the birth of Dharma among men, arising from the curse of Ani-Mandavya.
कृष्णद्वैपायनाच्चैव प्रसूतिर्वरदानजा। धृतराष्ट्रस्य पाण्डोश्च पाण्डवानां च संभवः
And also, the birth from Krishna Dvaipayana, due to the granting of boons; the birth of Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and the Pandavas.
वारणावतयात्रा च मन्त्रो दुर्योधनस्य च। कूटस्य धार्तराष्ट्रेण प्रेषणं पाण्डवान्प्रति
The journey to Varanavata, and Duryodhana's scheme; the deceitful mission sent by the son of Dhritarashtra against the Pandavas.
हितोपदेशश्च पथि धर्मराजस्य धीमतः। विदुरेण कृतो यत्र हितार्थं म्लेच्छभाषया
And the wise counsel given on the road to the righteous king by Vidura, for his welfare, spoken in the language of the mlecchas.
विदुरस्य च वाक्येन सुरुङ्गोपक्रमक्रिया। निषाद्याः पञ्चपुत्रायाः सुप्ताया जतुवेश्मनि
And by Vidura's words, the undertaking of the tunnel project; the five sons of the Nishada woman, sleeping in the house of lac.
पुरोचनस्य चात्रैव दहनं संप्रकीर्तितम्। पाण्डवानां वने घोरे हिडिम्बायाश्च दर्शनम्
And here too is recounted the burning of Purochana; and in the dreadful forest, the encounter of the Pandavas with Hidimba.
तत्रैव च हिडिम्बस्य वधो भीमान्महाबलात्। घटोत्कचस्य चोत्पत्तिंरत्रैव परिकीर्तिता
There also, the slaying of Hidimba by the mighty Bhima; and the birth of Ghatotkacha is narrated there.
महर्षेर्दर्शनं चैव व्यासस्यामिततेजसः। तदाज्ञयैकचक्रायां ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने
And the meeting with the great sage Vyasa, of immeasurable energy; by his command, in the house of a Brahmin at Ekachakra.
अज्ञातचर्यया वासो यत्र तेषां प्रकीर्तितः। बकस्य निधनं चैव नागराणां च विस्मयः
There is described their dwelling in disguise; and the death of Baka, and the amazement of the townspeople.
संभवश्चैव कृष्णाया धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चैव ह। ब्राह्मणात्समुपश्रुत्य व्यासवाक्यप्रचोदिताः
And the birth of Krishna (Draupadi) and of Dhrishtadyumna; having heard from the Brahmin, prompted by Vyasa's words.
द्रौपदीं प्रार्थयन्तस्ते स्वयंवरदिदृक्षया। पञ्चालानभितो जग्मुर्यत्र कौतूहलान्विताः
Desiring to see the svayamvara, they sought Draupadi; filled with curiosity, they went towards the land of the Panchalas.
अङ्गारपर्णं निर्जित्य गङ्गाकूलेऽर्जुनस्तदा। सख्यं कृत्वा ततस्तेन तस्मादेव च शुश्रुवे
Then, having defeated Angaraparna on the banks of the Ganga, Arjuna made friendship with him, and from him he heard (certain things).
