अभिपत्य महाबाहुर्गरुत्मानिव वेगितः। सेनापतेः क्षुरप्रेण शिरश्चिच्छेद पाण्डवः
The mighty-armed Pandava, charging swiftly like Garuda, cut off the commander’s head with a razor-edged arrow.
संप्रहस्य च हृष्टात्मा त्रिभिर्बाणैर्महाभुजः । जलसन्धं विनिर्भिद्य सोऽनयद्यमसादनम्
Rejoicing, his spirit elated, the mighty Bhima pierced Jalasandha with three arrows and sent him to the abode of Yama.
सुषेणं च ततो हत्वा प्रेषयामास मृत्यवे। उग्रस्य सशिरस्त्राणं शिरश्चन्द्रोपमं भुवि
Then, after slaying Suṣena, he dispatched him to death; and the fierce Ugrasya, helmeted, his moon-like head fell to the ground.
पातयामास भल्लेन कुण्डलाभ्यां विभूषितम्। वीरबाहुं च सप्तत्या साश्वकेतुं ससारथिम्
With a broad-headed arrow, he struck down Vīrabāhu, adorned with earrings, and with seventy arrows, slew his charioteer and horse-banner.
निनाय समरे वीरः परलोकाय पाण्डवः। भीमं भीमरथं चोभौ भीमसेनो हसन्निव
In battle, the heroic Pandava sent both Bhīma and Bhīmaratha to the next world, Bhimasena almost laughing as he did so.
पुत्रौ ते दुर्मदौ राजन्ननयद्यमसादनम् । ततः सुलोचनं भीमः क्षुरप्रेण महामृधे
O King, your two arrogant sons he sent to the abode of Yama; then Bhima, with a razor-edged arrow, struck down Sulocana in the great battle.
मिषतां सर्वसैन्यानामनयद्यमसादनम्। पुत्रास्तु तव तं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनपराक्रमम्
Before the eyes of all the armies, he sent him to the realm of Yama; seeing Bhimasena’s prowess, your sons—
शेषा येऽन्येऽभवंस्तत्र ते भीमस्य भयार्दिताः। विप्रद्रुता दिशो राजन्वध्यमाना महात्मना
Those others who remained there, struck with fear of Bhima, fled in all directions, O King, as they were being slain by the great-souled one.
ततोऽब्रवीच्छान्तनवः सर्वानेव महारथान्। एष भीमो रणे क्रुद्धो धार्तराष्ट्रान्महारथान्
Then Shantanu’s descendant addressed all the great chariot-warriors: 'This Bhima, enraged in battle, is felling the Dhartarashtra heroes—'
यथा प्राग्र्यान्यथा ज्येष्ठान्यथा शूरांश्च संगतान्। निपातयत्युग्रधन्वा तं प्रगृह्णीत माचिरम्
'Whether foremost, eldest, or gathered heroes, this fierce archer strikes them down; seize him at once, without delay!'
एवमुक्त्वा ततः सर्वे धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैनिकाः। अभ्यद्रवन्त संक्रुद्धा भीमसेनं महाबलम्
Having spoken thus, then all the soldiers of Dhritarashtra, enraged, rushed at mighty Bhimasena.
भगदत्तः प्रभिन्नेन कुञ्जरेण विशांपते । अभ्ययात्सहसा तत्रयत्र भीमो व्यवस्थितः
Bhagadatta, O king of men, with his maddened elephant, suddenly advanced to the place where Bhima stood.
आपतन्नेव च रणे भीमसेनं शिलीमुखैः । अदृश्यं समरे चक्रे जीमूत इव भास्करम्
And as he charged in battle, he covered Bhimasena with arrows, making him invisible on the field, as clouds cover the sun.
अभिमन्युमुखास्तत्तु नामृष्यन्त महारथाः । भीमस्याच्छादनं शङ्ख्ये स्वबाहुबलमाश्रिताः
But the great chariot-warriors led by Abhimanyu could not endure Bhima being thus covered, relying on the strength of their own arms.
त एनं शरवर्षेण समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् । गजं च शरवृष्ट्या तु बिभिदुस्ते समन्ततः
They surrounded him on all sides with a shower of arrows, and with a rain of shafts they struck the elephant from every direction.
स शस्त्रवृष्ट्याऽभिहतः समस्तैस्तैर्महारथैः। प्राग्ज्योतिषगजो राजन्नानालिङ्गैः सुतेजनैः
Struck by the weapon-rain from all those great chariot-warriors, the elephant of Pragjyotisha, O king, was pierced with many sharp arrows.
संजातरुधिरोत्पीडः प्रेक्षणीयोऽभवद्रणे। गभस्तिभिरिवार्कस्य संस्यूतो जलदो महान्
With blood streaming from its wounds, it became a sight to behold in battle, like a great cloud pierced by the rays of the sun.
संचोदितो मदस्रावी भगदत्तेन वारणः। अभ्यधावत तन्सर्वान्कालोत्सृष्ट इवान्तकः
Urged on by Bhagadatta, the elephant, with ichor flowing, charged at them all like Death unleashed by Time.
द्विगुणं जवमास्थाय कम्पयंश्चरणैर्महीम्। तस्य तत्सुमहद्रूपं दृष्ट्वा सर्वे महारथाः
Doubling its speed, shaking the earth with its feet, all the great chariot-warriors, seeing its immense form,
असह्यं मन्यमानाश्च नातिप्रमनसोऽभवन् । ततस्तु नृपतिः क्रुद्धो भीमसेनं स्तनान्तरे
Deeming it unbearable, were not very pleased; then the enraged king struck Bhimasena in the chest.
आजघान महाराज शरेणानतपर्वणा। सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासस्तेन राज्ञा महारथः
The great king struck him with a sharp arrow; thus wounded by the king, the mighty archer and great chariot-warrior,
मूर्च्छयाऽभिपरीतात्मा ध्वजयष्टिं समाश्रयत्। तांस्तु भीतान्समालक्ष्य भीमसेनं च मूर्च्छितम्
His mind overcome with faintness, took hold of his banner-staff; seeing them afraid and Bhimasena fainting,
ननाद बलवन्नादं भगदत्तः प्रतापवान्। ततो घटोत्कचो राजन्प्रेक्ष्य भीमं तथाऽऽगतं
Bhagadatta, powerful and valiant, roared loudly; then, O king, Ghatotkacha, seeing Bhima in that state,
संक्रुद्धो राक्षसो घोरस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत। स कृत्वा दारुणां मायां भूरूणां भयवर्धिनीम्
The enraged and terrible Rakshasa vanished right there, having created a dreadful illusion that increased the fear of men.
अदृश्यत निमेषार्धाद्धोररूपं समास्थितः। ऐरावतं समारूढः स वै मायाकृतं स्वयम्
Within half a moment he was seen, having assumed a terrifying form, mounted upon Airavata, created by his own magic.
तस्य चान्येऽपि दिङ्वागा बभूवुरनुयायिनः। अञ्जनो वमानश्चैव महापद्मश्च सुप्रभः
And with him were others as companions: Anjana, Vamana, and the radiant Mahapadma.
त्रय एते महानागा राक्षसैः समधिष्ठिताः। महाकायास्त्रिधा राजन्प्रस्रवन्तो मदं बहु
These three great elephants, possessed by Rakshasas, of immense size, flowed with much ichor, O king.
तेजोवीर्यबलोपेता महाबलपराक्रमाः। घटोत्कचस्तु स्वं नागं चोदयामास तं तदा
Endowed with energy, heroism, and strength, mighty in valor, Ghatotkacha then urged on his own elephant.
सगजं भगदत्तं तु हन्तुकामः परंतपः। ते चान्ये चोदिता नागा राक्षसैस्तैर्महाबलैः
Desiring to slay Bhagadatta with his elephant, that scorcher of foes, and other elephants urged on by those mighty rakshasas—
परिपेतुः सुसंरब्धाश्चतुर्दंष्ट्राश्चतुर्दिशम्। भगदत्तस्य तं नागं विषाणैरभ्यपीडयन्
Fiercely enraged, with four tusks each, they rushed from all directions and struck Bhagadatta’s elephant with their tusks.
