कौरवं सात्यकिश्चैव शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः। अवारयदमेयात्मा सर्वलोकस्य पश्यतः
And Satyaki, of unconquerable spirit, checked the Kaurava with arrows whose joints were well-polished, as all the world looked on.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा सोदर्यैः परिवारितः। सोमदत्तिं रणे यत्तः समन्तात्पर्यवारयत्
Then King Duryodhana, surrounded by his brothers, resolutely protected Somadatti's son on all sides in battle.
तं चैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे सात्यकिं रभसं रणे। परिवार्य स्थिताः सङ्ख्ये समन्तात्सुमहौजसः
And all the Pandavas, of great energy, surrounded Satyaki in the battle, standing firm on every side.
भीमसेनस्तु संक्रुद्धो गजामुद्यम्य भारत । दुर्योधनमुखान्सर्वान्पुत्रांस्ते पर्यवारयत्
Bhimasena, enraged, lifting his mace, blocked all your sons, led by Duryodhana, O Bharata.
रथैरनेकसाहस्रैः क्रोधामर्षसमन्वितः । नन्दकस्तव पुत्रस्तु भीमसेनं महाबलम्
Nandaka, your son, filled with anger and wrath, attacked Bhimasena of great strength with many thousands of chariots.
विव्याध विशिखैः षड्भिः कङ्कपत्रैः शिलाशितैः । दुर्योधनस्तदा राजन्भीमसेनं महारथम्
Then, O King, Duryodhana struck the mighty car-warrior Bhimasena with six sharp arrows tipped with vulture feathers.
आजघानोरसि क्रुद्धो मार्गणैर्नवभिः शितैः । ततो भीमो महाबाहुः स्वरथं सुमहाबलः
Enraged, he struck Bhima in the chest with nine sharp arrows; then Bhima, the mighty-armed and exceedingly strong, mounted his own splendid chariot.
आरुरोह रथश्रेष्ठं विशोकं चेदमब्रवीत् । एते महारथाः शूरा धार्तराष्ट्राः समागताः
Ascending the foremost chariot, he addressed Vishoka, saying: 'These great car-warriors, the valiant sons of Dhritarashtra, have assembled here.'
मामेव भृशसंक्रुद्धा हन्तुमभ्युद्यता युधि। मनोरथद्रुमोऽस्माकं चिन्तितो बहुवार्षिकः
'All of them, greatly enraged, are intent on killing me in battle; the wish that we have cherished for many years, like a tree of desire, is now at hand.'
सफलः सूत चाद्येह योऽहं पश्यामि सोदरान्। यत्राशोकसमुत्क्षिप्ता रेणवो रथनेमिभिः
'O charioteer, today that wish is fulfilled here, as I see my own brothers, where the dust, raised by the wheels of chariots, is tossed up without sorrow.'
प्रयास्यन्त्यन्तरिक्षं हि शरबृन्दैर्दिगन्तरे । तत्र तिष्ठति सन्नद्धः स्वयं राजा सुयोधनः
'There, in the distance, flocks of arrows are flying through the sky; there stands King Suyodhana himself, fully armored.'
भ्रातरश्चास्य सन्नद्धाः कुलपुत्रा मदोत्कटाः । एतानद्य हनिष्यामि पश्यतस्ते न संशयः
'His brothers too, armored and proud scions of the family, are with him; today I will slay these men before your eyes—of this there is no doubt.'
तस्मान्ममाश्वान्संग्रमे यत्तः संयच्छ सारथे। एवमुक्त्वा ततः पार्थस्तव पुत्रं विशांपते
'Therefore, charioteer, restrain my horses with care in battle.' Having spoken thus, Partha then struck your son, O lord of the people,
विव्याध निशितैस्तीक्ष्णैः शरैः कनकभूषणैः। नन्दकं च त्रिभिर्भाणैरभ्यविध्यत्स्तनान्तरे
with sharp, keen arrows adorned with gold; and with three arrows he pierced Nandaka in the chest.
तं तु दुर्योधनः षष्ट्या विद्ध्वा भीमं महाबलम्। त्रिभिरन्यैः सुनिशितैर्विशोकं प्रत्यविध्यत
But Duryodhana, striking mighty Bhima with sixty arrows, then pierced Vishoka with three other well-aimed, sharp shafts.
भिमस्य च रणे राजन्धनुश्चिच्छेद भासुरम् । मुष्टिदेशे भृशं तीक्ष्णौस्त्रिभिर्भल्लैर्हसन्निव
And in battle, O King, he laughingly cut Bhima’s shining bow at the grip with three very sharp broad-headed arrows.
समरे प्रेक्ष्य यन्तारं विशोकं तु वृकोदरः । पीडितं विशिखैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तव पुत्रेण धन्विना
Seeing his charioteer Vishoka afflicted in battle by your son, the archer, with sharp arrows, Vrikodara became enraged.
अमृष्यमाणः संरब्धो धनुर्दिव्यं परामृशम् । पुत्रस्य ते महाराज वधार्थं भरतर्षभ
Unable to endure it, agitated, he grasped his celestial bow, O best of Bharatas, intent on killing your son, O great king.
समादधत्सुसंक्रुद्धः क्षुरप्रं रोमवाहिनम् । तेन चिच्छेद नृपतेर्भीमः कार्मुकमुत्तमम्
Seizing a razor-headed, hair-raising arrow in great fury, Bhima cut the king’s excellent bow with it.
सोऽपविद्ध्य धनुश्छिन्नं पुत्रस्ते क्रोधमूर्च्छितः । अन्यत्कार्मुकमादत्त सत्वरं वेगवत्तरम्
Then your son, maddened with rage, after casting aside his broken bow, quickly took up another, even swifter bow.
संदधे विशिखं घोर कालमृत्युसमप्रभम् । तेनाजघान संक्रुद्धो भीमसेनं स्तनान्तरे
He fitted a terrible arrow, resembling Death at the end of time, and with it, in great anger, struck Bhimasena in the chest.
स गाढविद्धो व्यथितः स्यान्दनोपस्थ आविशत्। स निषण्णो रथोपस्थे मूर्च्छामभिजगाम ह
Deeply wounded and in pain, Bhima entered the floor of his chariot; sitting down there, he fell into a swoon.
तं दृष्ट्वा व्यथितं भीममभिमन्युपुरोगमाः । नामृष्यन्त महेष्वासाः पाण्डवानां महारथः
Seeing Bhima distressed, the great archers among the Pandavas, led by Abhimanyu, could not endure it.
ततस्तु तुमुलां वृष्टिं शस्त्राणां तिग्मतेजसाम् । पातयामासुरव्यग्राः पुत्रस्य तव मूर्धनि
Then, unhesitating, they unleashed a tumultuous shower of weapons, blazing fiercely, upon your son's head.
प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञां भीमसेनो महाबलः । दुर्योधनं त्रिभिर्विद्ध्वा पुनर्विव्याध पञ्चभिः
Regaining his senses, mighty Bhimasena struck Duryodhana with three arrows, and then pierced him again with five.
शल्यं च पञ्चविंशत्या शरैर्विव्याध पाण्डवः। रुक्मपुङ्खैर्महेष्वासः स विद्धो व्यपयाद्रणात्
The Pandava, wielder of great bows, struck Shalya with twenty-five gold-feathered arrows; wounded, he withdrew from the battle.
प्रत्युद्ययुस्ततो भीमं तव पुत्राश्चतुर्दश । सेनापतिः सुषेणश्च जलसन्धः सुलोचनः
Then, your fourteen sons, along with the commander Suṣena, Jalasandha, and Sulocana, advanced against Bhima.
उद्रो भीमरथो भीमो वीरबाहुरलोलुपः । दुर्मुखो दुष्प्रधर्षश्च विवित्सुर्विकटः समः
Udra, Bhīmaratha, Bhīma, Vīrabāhu, Alolupa, Durmukha, Duṣpradharṣa, Vivitsu, Vikaṭa, and Sama—
विसृजन्तो बहून्बाणान्क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनाः । भीमसेनमभिद्रुत्य विव्यधुः सहिता भृशम्
With eyes reddened by anger, they rushed at Bhimasena, releasing many arrows, and struck him fiercely together.
पुत्रांस्तु तव संप्रेक्ष्य भीमसेनो महाबलः । सृक्किणी विलिहन्वीरः पशुमध्ये यथा वृकः
Beholding your sons, mighty Bhimasena, licking his lips like a wolf among cattle, stood ready for battle.
