Bhimasena, in battle, like a shore halting the boundless great ocean, checked that unshakable sea of troops.
Then, O King, we beheld a wondrous deed of the high-souled Pandava, Bhimasena, in battle—an act beyond human power.
Bhimasena, without confusion, checked all the advancing kings, along with their horses, chariots, and elephants, with his mace.
Having repelled those waves of troops with his mace, Bhima, foremost among charioteers, stood firm in the fierce battle like the immovable Meru mountain.
In that exceedingly fierce and dreadful moment, his brothers, his sons, and Dhrishtadyumna, son of Prishata,
The sons of Draupadi, Abhimanyu, and the undefeated Shikhandi did not abandon mighty Bhimasena when fear arose.
Then, seizing his massive, heavy iron mace, he rushed at your troops like Death himself wielding his staff.
He shattered clusters of chariots and overpowered groups of horses, dragging the chariot divisions with the force of his arms, that Pandava.
He scattered them on the battlefield like Time at the end of an age, dragging the networks of chariots with the strength of his thighs, that Pandava.
He swiftly crushed the troops like an elephant trampling reeds; charioteers from chariots, elephant-warriors from elephants.
And horsemen from horseback, and foot soldiers on the ground—he struck them all with his mace, like the wind felling trees with its force.
Bhimasena, mighty-armed, in the army of your son, was smeared with the blood of slain warriors and elephants.
His great and terrible mace, felling elephants and horses, appeared everywhere, along with the bodies of slain men, elephants, and steeds.
The battlefield became like the very abode of Death, resembling the bow of Rudra when, enraged, he strikes down the beasts.
They saw Bhimasena's fierce mace, dreadful as the rod of Yama, roaring like Indra's thunderbolt, and fit for slaughter.
As the high-souled son of Kunti brandished his mace, its form appeared most terrible, like Time itself at the end of an age.
Seeing him driving back that great army again and again, and death approaching, all became disheartened.
Wherever the son of Pandu looked, raising his mace, there the armies of Bharata were shattered.
Tearing through the troops with unmatched might, devouring battalions like Death with gaping mouth.
Seeing Vrikodara, the doer of terrible deeds, wielding his great mace thus, Bhishma swiftly advanced.
With a mighty chariot-roar, on a chariot shining like the sun, he covered him with a shower of arrows like a rain-filled cloud.
Seeing Bhishma coming thus, face wide as Death itself, Bhima, mighty-armed and enraged, rushed to meet him.
At that moment, Satyaki, steadfast in truth, the hero of the Shinis, charged at the grandsire, striking down foes with his strong bow and shaking your son's army.
As he advanced with horses gleaming like silver, releasing sharp, well-feathered arrows, none among your ranks, O Bharata, could withstand him then.
Then Alambusha, the Rakshasa, struck him with ten arrows, and the grandson of Shini, countering with four arrows, rushed at him on his chariot.
Hearing that the foremost of the Vrishnis had come, moving among the enemy, driving back the Kurus' best and roaring again and again in battle—
Your warriors showered him with arrows like clouds pouring water on a mountain, yet even so, they could not withstand him, blazing like the midday sun.
There, none was undismayed except the son of Somadatta; that great-souled Bhurishravas, O Bharata, took up his bow.
Seeing his own chariots being driven back, he advanced, desiring to fight Satyaki.
Then, O king, Bhurishravas, furious, struck Satyaki with nine arrows, like goads upon a great elephant.
