As he advanced like a great flood, like a serpent falling upon its prey, whirling his flashing scimitar, he seemed like Death unleashed by Time.
Glowing like the sun, with the might of a maddened elephant, the Pandavas and Dhrishtadyumna, son of Prishata, beheld him there.
As the Panchala heir rushed to meet him, scimitar in hand and bearing a shield of arrows, he confronted him head-on.
As he drew near, surpassing the speed of arrows, the enraged commander, acting swiftly, struck his head with a mace.
O King, as he fell slain, his shining scimitar and splendid shield dropped swiftly from his hand to the earth.
Having slain him with the tip of his mace, the mighty son of the Panchala king, of Bhima's prowess, attained supreme joy.
When that great archer, the mighty car-warrior, son of Shalya, was slain, a great outcry arose in your army, O Māriṣa.
Then Sāṃyamani, enraged upon seeing his son killed, rushed swiftly against the impetuous warrior of the Pāñcālas.
There, those two fierce warriors, both intoxicated with battle, met on the field; all the kings, both Kurus and Pāṇḍavas, beheld them.
Then Sāṃyamani, enraged, struck Pārṣata, the destroyer of enemy heroes, with three arrows, as an elephant is struck by goads.
Likewise, Shalya, the ornament of the battlefield, angrily struck the valiant Pārṣata on the chest; then the battle continued.
Indeed, Sañjaya, I think fate is supreme over human effort, since my son's army is being slain by the son of Pāṇḍu.
For, O dear one, you always report my men as slain, and you always describe the Pāṇḍavas as untroubled and rejoicing.
You always report my men as broken and lost, Sañjaya, lacking in valor, fallen or being felled, and as if already slain.
Though they fight to the best of their ability and strive for victory, the Pāṇḍavas always prevail, and my men are always defeated.
Thus I shall constantly hear, O dear one, the harsh and unbearable sounds of lamentation caused by Duryodhana.
I do not see any means by which my men might conquer the Pāṇḍavas and win victory in battle, Sañjaya.
Hear, O king, with steadiness, of the great destruction of men, elephants, horses, and chariots that has befallen your side.
Then Dhṛṣṭadyumna, oppressed by Shalya with nine arrows, angrily harassed the king of Madra with his own devices.
There we beheld a wondrous feat of Pārṣata's valor, as he swiftly checked Shalya, the ornament of the battlefield.
At that time, no space could be seen between those two chariot-warriors; for a moment, their battle was evenly matched.
Then, O king, Shalya in battle cut down Dhṛṣṭadyumna's bow with a sharp, golden-feathered arrow.
Then, in battle, he covered him with a shower of arrows, as clouds cover a mountain with rain at the start of the rains.
Then Abhimanyu, enraged at Dhṛṣṭadyumna's distress, swiftly rushed toward the chariot of the king of Madra.
Then Kṛṣṇa's son, filled with intense anger, reached the ruler of Madra and struck the steadfast Ārtāyani with sharp arrows.
Thereupon, O King, your men, eager to attack Arjuna in battle, swiftly surrounded the chariot of the Madra king and took their stand.
Duryodhana, Vikarna, Duḥśāsana, Viviṃśati, Durmarṣaṇa, Duḥsaha, Citraseṇa, and Durmukha,
And Satyavrata—blessings to you—and Purumitra, O Bhārata, these all stood in battle, protecting the chariot of the Madra king.
Against them, Bhīmasena, enraged, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna the son of Pṛṣata, along with the sons of Draupadī, Abhimanyu, and the two sons of Mādrī, confronted them.
These ten chariot-warriors of the Dhārtarāṣṭras were checked by ten warriors, O lord of men, who unleashed weapons of many kinds.
