तस्य लाघवमार्गस्थमादित्यसदृशप्रभम् । व्यदृश्यत महच्चापं समरे युध्यतः परैः

स द्रौणिमिषुणैकेन विद्ध्वा शल्यं च पञ्चभिः । ध्वजं सांयमनेश्वैव सोऽष्टाभिश्चिच्छिदे ततः
He struck Drona's son with a single arrow, and Shalya with five; then, with eight arrows, he cut down the banner of Saumya's son.
रुक्मदण्डां महाशक्तिं प्रेषितां सौमदत्तिन । शितेनोरगसंकाशां पत्रिणाभिजघान ताम्
A great spear with a golden shaft, hurled by Saumadatti, he struck down with a feathered arrow, sharp as a serpent.
शल्यस्य च महावेगानस्यतः समरे शरान्। `धनुश्चिच्छेद भल्लेन तीव्रवेगन फाल्गुनिः' जघानार्जुनदायादश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान्
And as Shalya released swift arrows in battle, Phalguni's son cut his bow with a keen broadhead, and with four arrows slew his four horses.
भूरिश्रवाश्च शल्यश्च द्रौणिः सांयमनिः शलः। नाभ्यवर्तन्तं संरब्धाः कार्ष्णेर्बाहुबलोदयात्

ततस्त्रिगर्ता राजेन्द्र मद्राश्च सह केकयैः । पञ्चविंशतिसाहस्रास्तव पुत्रेण चोदिताः
Then the Trigartas, O king, and the Madras along with the Kekayas—twenty-five thousand strong—urged on by your son—
धनुर्वेदविदो मुख्या अजेयाः शत्रुभिर्युधि। सह पुत्रं जिघांसन्तं परिवव्रुः किरीटिनम्
Chiefs skilled in the science of archery, unconquerable by enemies in battle, surrounded the diademed one, intent on killing your son.
तौ तु तत्र पितापुत्रौ परिक्षिप्तौ महारथौ । ददर्श राजन्पाञ्चल्यः सेनापतिररिन्दम
There, O King, the mighty chariot-warriors, father and son, surrounded on all sides, were seen by the Panchala commander, the subduer of foes.
स वारणरथोघानां सहस्रैर्बहुभिर्वृतः। वाजिभिः पत्तिभिश्चैव वृतः शतसहस्रशः

Mounted on his chariot drawn by pigeongrey steeds, the destroyer of enemy heroes, stringing his bow in wrath and urging his troops forward, advanced against the Madra and Kekaya divisions.
तेन कीर्तिमता गुप्तमनीकं दृढधन्वना। संरब्धरथनागाश्वं योत्स्यमानमशोभत

Then the son of Samyamani, enraged in battle, pierced the Panchala chief with thirty arrows and his charioteer with ten.
सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासः सृक्किणी परिसंलिहन्। भल्लेन भृशतीक्ष्णेन निचकर्तास्य कार्मुकम्
Though grievously wounded, the great archer, licking the corners of his mouth, severed his opponent's bow with a keen and forceful razor-headed arrow.
अथैनं पञ्चविंशत्या क्षिप्रमेव समार्पयत् । अश्वांश्चास्यावधीद्राजन्नुभौ तौ पार्ष्णिसारथी
Then, at once, he struck him with twenty-five arrows and slew both his horses and his two charioteers, O King.
स हताश्वे रते तिष्ठन्ददर्श भरतर्षभ । पुत्रः सांयमनेः पुत्रं पाञ्चाल्यस्य महात्मनः

Seizing a terrible, excellent iron scimitar, that best of men, now on foot, swiftly leapt onto the chariot.
तं महौघमिवायान्तं स्वात्पतन्तमिवोरगम् । भ्रान्तावरणनिस्त्रिंशं कालोत्सृष्टमिवान्तकम्
As he advanced like a great flood, like a serpent falling upon its prey, whirling his flashing scimitar, he seemed like Death unleashed by Time.
दीप्यमानमिवादित्यं मत्तवारणविक्रमम् । अपश्यन्पाण्डवास्तत्र धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः
Glowing like the sun, with the might of a maddened elephant, the Pandavas and Dhrishtadyumna, son of Prishata, beheld him there.
तस्य पाञ्चालदायादः प्रतीपमभिधावतः। शितनिस्त्रिंशहस्तस्य शरावरणधारिणः
As the Panchala heir rushed to meet him, scimitar in hand and bearing a shield of arrows, he confronted him head-on.
बाणवेगमतीतस्य तथाभ्याशमुपेयुषः । त्वरन्सेनापतिः क्रुद्धो बिभेद गदया शिरः
As he drew near, surpassing the speed of arrows, the enraged commander, acting swiftly, struck his head with a mace.
तस्य राजन्सनिस्त्रिंशं सुप्रभं च शरावरम् । हतस्य पततो हस्ताद्वेगेन न्यपतद्भुवि
O King, as he fell slain, his shining scimitar and splendid shield dropped swiftly from his hand to the earth.
तं निहत्य गदाग्रेण स लेभे परमां मुदम्। पुत्रः पाञ्चालराजस्य महात्मा भीमविक्रमः
Having slain him with the tip of his mace, the mighty son of the Panchala king, of Bhima's prowess, attained supreme joy.
तस्मिन्हते महेष्वासे शल्यपुत्रे महारथे । हाहाकारो महानासीत्तव सैन्यस्य मारिष
When that great archer, the mighty car-warrior, son of Shalya, was slain, a great outcry arose in your army, O Māriṣa.
ततः सांयमनिः क्रुद्धो दृष्ट्वा निहतामात्मजम् । अभिदुद्राव वेगेन पाञ्चाल्यं युद्धदुर्मदम्
Then Sāṃyamani, enraged upon seeing his son killed, rushed swiftly against the impetuous warrior of the Pāñcālas.
तौ तत्र समरे शूरौ समेतौ युद्धदुर्मदौ । ददृशुः सर्वराजानः कुरवः पाण्डवास्तथा
There, those two fierce warriors, both intoxicated with battle, met on the field; all the kings, both Kurus and Pāṇḍavas, beheld them.
ततः सांयमनिः क्रुद्धः पार्षतं परवीरहा। आजघान त्रिभिर्बाणैस्तोत्रैरिव महाद्विपम्
Then Sāṃyamani, enraged, struck Pārṣata, the destroyer of enemy heroes, with three arrows, as an elephant is struck by goads.
