अथैनं रथबृन्देन कोष्ठकीकृत्य भारत। शरैः सुबहुसाहस्रैः समन्तादभ्यवारयन्
Then, O Bharata, enclosing him with a mass of chariots, they assailed him from all sides with countless thousands of arrows.
शक्तीश्च विमलाकस्तीक्ष्णा गदाश्च परिघैः सह । प्रासान्परश्वथांश्चैव मुद्गरान्मुसलानपि
They hurled at him in battle sharp, spotless spears, maces along with iron clubs, lances, axes, mallets, and pestles.
चिक्षिषुः समरे क्रुद्धाः फल्गुनस्य रथं प्रति। शस्त्राणामथ तां वृष्टिं शलभानामिवायतिम्
Enraged, they sought to strike Phalguna's chariot in battle with that shower of weapons, like a swarm of locusts.
रुरोध सर्वतः पार्थः शरैः कनकभूषणैः । तत्र तल्लाघवं दृष्ट्वा बीभत्सोरतिमानुषम्
Partha blocked all of that on every side with arrows adorned with gold; seeing that extraordinary swiftness of Bibhatsu, surpassing human limits—
देवदानवगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः । साधुसाध्विति राजेन्द्र फल्गुनं प्रत्यपूजयन्
The gods, Danavas, Gandharvas, Pisacas, Nagas, and Rakshasas, O king, praised Phalguna, exclaiming, 'Well done! Well done!'
सात्यकिश्चाभिमन्युश्च महत्या सेकनया वृतौ । गान्धारान्समरे शूराञ्जग्मतुः सहसौबलान्
Satyaki and Abhimanyu, with a great force, attacked the brave Gandharas and the Saubala troops in battle.
तत्र सौबलकाः क्रुद्धा वार्ष्णेयस्य रथोत्तमम् । तिशलश्चिच्छिदुः क्रोधाच्छस्त्रैर्नानाविधैर्युधि
There, the Saubalas, enraged, shattered Satyaki's excellent chariot in battle with various kinds of weapons out of wrath.
सात्यकिस्तु रथं त्यक्त्वा वर्तमाने भयावहे । अभिमन्यो रथं तूर्णमारुरोह परंतपः
But Satyaki, abandoning his chariot amid the terrifying conflict, swiftly mounted Abhimanyu's chariot, that subduer of foes.
तावेकरथसंयुक्तौ सौबलेयस्य वाहिनीम् । व्यधमेतां शितैस्तूर्णं शरैःक सन्नतपर्वभिः
Then, united on a single chariot, the two quickly scattered the Saubala army with sharp, well-feathered arrows.
द्रोणभीष्मौ रणे यत्तौ धर्मराजस्य वाहिनीम् । नाशयेतां शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः कङ्कपत्रपरिच्छदैः
Drona and Bhishma, exerting themselves in battle, destroyed the army of the righteous king with sharp arrows tipped with vulture feathers.
ततो धर्मसुतोक राजा माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ । मिषतां सर्वसैन्यानां द्रोणानीकमुपाद्रवन्
Then King Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, along with the two sons of Madri, rushed at Drona's division before the eyes of all the troops.
तत्रासीत्सुमहद्युद्धं तुमुलं रोमहर्षणम् । यथा देवासुरं युद्धं पूर्वमासीत्सुदारुणम्
There arose a great and tumultuous battle, hair-raising, like the dreadful conflict between gods and asuras in ancient times.
कुर्वाणौ सुमहत्कर्म भीमसेनघटोत्कचौ। दुर्योधनस्ततोऽभ्येत्य तावुभावप्यवारयत्
As Bhimasena and Ghatotkacha were performing a mighty deed, Duryodhana then approached and confronted both of them.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम हैडिम्बस्य पराक्रमम्। अतीत्य पीतरं युद्धे यदयुध्यत भारत
There we beheld the astonishing valor of Hidimba's son, O Bharata, as he surpassed his father in battle and fought on.
भीमसेनस्तु संक्रुद्धो दुर्योधनममर्षणम्। हृद्यविध्यत्पृषत्केन प्रहसन्निव पाण्डवः
Bhimasena, enraged, struck the unyielding Duryodhana in the heart with an arrow, the Pandava seeming almost to laugh as he did so.
ततो दुर्योधननो राजा प्रहारवरपीडितः। निषसाद रथोपस्थे कश्मलं च जगाम ह
Then King Duryodhana, overwhelmed by that powerful blow, sank down upon the seat of his chariot and fell into a swoon.
तं विसंज्ञं विदित्वा तु त्वरमाणोऽस्य सारथिः । अपोवाह रणाद्राजंस्ततः सैन्यमभज्यत
Seeing him unconscious, his charioteer, acting swiftly, carried the king away from the battlefield, and then the army broke apart.
ततस्तां कौरवीं सेनां द्रवमाणां समन्ततः। निघ्नन्भीमः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैरनुवव्राज पृष्ठतः
Then Bhima, striking with sharp arrows, pursued the fleeing Kaurava army on all sides, cutting them down from behind.
पार्षतश्च रथश्रोष्ठो धर्मपुत्रश्च पाण्डवः। द्रोणस्य पश्यतः सैन्यं गाङ्गेयस्य च पश्यतः
The foremost charioteer Parshata and the Pandava Yudhishthira, in the sight of Drona and Ganga's son, attacked the army.
जघ्नतुर्विशिकैस्तीक्ष्णैः परानीकविनाशनैः । द्रवमाणं तु तत्सैन्यं तव पुत्रस्य संयुगे
With sharp arrows that destroyed hostile ranks, they struck down your son's army as it fled in battle.
नाशक्नुतां वारयितुं भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ । वार्यमाणं च भीष्मेण द्रोणेन च महात्मना
Bhishma and Drona, those mighty warriors, were unable to stop them; though both Bhishma and the great-souled Drona tried to restrain the flight.
विद्रवत्येव तत्सैन्यं पश्यतोर्द्रोणभीष्मयोः। ततो रथसहस्रेषु विद्रवत्सु ततस्ततःक
Even as Drona and Bhishma looked on, that army continued to flee; then, among the thousands of chariots scattering in all directions—
तावास्थितावेकरथं सौभद्रशिनिपुङ्गवौ । सौबलीं समरे सेनां शातयेतां समन्ततः
Those two heroes, Subhadra's son and the foremost of the Shinis, standing together on a single chariot, struck down Saubala's army on every side in battle.
शुशुभाते तदा तौ तु शैनेयकुरुपुङ्गवौ। अमावास्यां गतौ यद्वत्सोमसूर्यौ नभस्तले
At that time, those two, the foremost of the Shini and Kuru clans, shone like the moon and sun together in the sky on the night of the new moon.
अर्जुनस्तु ततः क्रुद्धस्तव सैन्यं विशांपते । ववर्ष शरवर्षेण धाराभिरिव तोयदः
Then Arjuna, enraged, poured down a shower of arrows upon your army, O lord of the people, like a raincloud releasing torrents.
वध्यमानं ततस्तत्र शरैः पार्थस्य संयुगे। दुद्राव कौरवं सैन्यं विषादभयकम्पितम्
Then, as Partha struck them with arrows in battle, the Kaurava army, shaken by fear and despair, fled.
द्रवतस्तान्समालक्ष्य भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ । न्यवारयेतां संरब्धौ दुर्योधनहितैषिणौ
Seeing them in flight, Bhishma and Drona, those mighty warriors, eager for Duryodhana's welfare, rushed forward and halted them.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा समाश्वस्य विशांपते । न्यवर्तयत तत्सैन्यं द्रवमाणां समन्ततः
Then King Duryodhana, having recovered, O lord of the people, rallied his fleeing army on all sides.
यत्र यत्र हि पुत्रं ते ये ये पश्यन्ति भारत। तत्र तत्र न्यवर्तन्त क्षत्रियाणां महरथाः
Wherever your son was seen, O Bharata, there the great chariot-warriors among the Kshatriyas turned back.
तान्निवृत्तान्समीक्ष्यैव ततोऽन्येऽपीतरे जनाः। अन्योन्यस्पर्धया राजँल्लज्जया चावतस्थिरे
Seeing those who had turned back, the other warriors also, out of rivalry and shame, halted and stood firm, O king.
