गजारोहवरैश्चापि तत्रतत्र पदातयः। पातिताः समदृश्यन्त तैश्चापि गजयोधिनः
There, foot-soldiers were seen struck down by the best of elephant-riders in various places, and likewise, elephant-warriors were felled by them.
पत्तिसङ्घा हयारोहैः सादिसङ्घाश्च पत्तिभिः । पात्यमाना व्यदृश्यन्त शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः
Groups of foot-soldiers by horsemen, and groups of horsemen by foot-soldiers, were seen being struck down by the hundreds and thousands.
ध्वजैस्तत्रापविद्धैश्च कार्मुकैस्तोमरैस्तथा। प्रासैस्तथा गदाभिश्च परिघैः कम्पनैस्तथा
There, with banners cast aside, bows, javelins, spears, maces, iron clubs, and bludgeons lay scattered.
शक्तिभिः कवचैश्चित्रैः कणपैरङ्कुशैरपि। निस्त्रिंशैर्विमलैश्चापि स्वर्णपुङ्खैः शरैस्तथा
With lances, ornate armor, darts, goads, sharp swords, and arrows with golden shafts, shining and spotless, as well.
परिस्तोमैः कुथाभिश्च कम्बलैश्च महाधनैः । भूर्भाति भरतश्रेष्ठ स्रग्दामैरिव चित्रिता
With shields, cuirasses, costly blankets, and splendid belts, O best of the Bharatas, the earth shone as if adorned with garlands.
नराश्वकायैः पतितैर्दन्तिभिश्च महाहवे । अगम्यरूपा पृथिवी मांसशोणितकर्दमा
With men, horses, and elephants fallen in the great battle, the earth became impassable, thick with mud of flesh and blood.
प्रशशाम रजो भौमं व्युक्षितं रणशोणितैः । दिशश्च विमलाः सर्वाः संबभूवुर्जनेश्वर
The dust on the ground, soaked with the blood of battle, settled down, and all the directions, O lord of men, became clear.
उत्थितान्यगणेयानि कबन्धानि समन्ततः। चिह्नभूतानि जगतो विनाशार्थाय भारत
Countless headless trunks arose everywhere, O Bharata, serving as ominous signs for the destruction of the world.
तस्मिन्युद्धे महारौद्रे वर्तमाने सुदारुणे । प्रत्यदृश्यन्त रथिनो धावमानाः समन्ततः
In that exceedingly fierce and dreadful battle, chariot-warriors were seen running in all directions.
ततो भीष्मश्च द्रोणश्च सैन्धवश्च जयद्रथः । पुरुमित्रो जयो भोजः शल्यश्चापि ससौबलः
Then Bhishma, Drona, the Sindhu king Jayadratha, Purumitra, Jaya, Bhoja, and Shalya with the Saubalas,
एते समरदुर्धर्षाः सिंहतुल्यपराक्रमाः। पाण्डवानामनीकानि बभञ्जुःस्म पुनःपुनः
These, invincible in battle and possessing lion-like valor, repeatedly broke the ranks of the Pandava forces.
तथैव भीमसेनोऽपि राक्षसश्च घटोत्कचः । सात्यकिश्चेकितानश्च द्रोपदेयाश्च भारत
Likewise, Bhimasena, the Rakshasa Ghatotkacha, Satyaki, Chekitana, and the sons of Draupadi, O Bharata,
तावकांस्तव पुत्रांश्च सहितान्सर्वराजभिः । द्रावयामासुराजौ ते त्रिदशा दानवानिव
Those heroes drove your sons, along with all the kings, just as the gods drove the Danavas.
तथा ते समरेऽन्योन्यं निघ्नन्तः क्षत्रियर्षभाः । रक्तोक्षिता घोररूपा विरेर्जुर्दानवा इव
Thus, those foremost of warriors, slaying each other in battle, drenched in blood and of terrible aspect, roared like Danavas.
विनिर्जित्य रिपून्वीरा सेकनयोरुभयोरपि। व्यदृस्यन्त महामात्रा ग्रहा इव नभस्तले
Having vanquished the enemy heroes on both sides, the great warriors appeared like planets in the sky.
ततो रथसहस्रेण पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव । अभ्ययात्पाण्डवं युद्धे राक्षसं च घटोत्कचम्
Then your son Duryodhana, with a thousand chariots, advanced in battle against the Pandava and the Rakshasa Ghatotkacha.
तथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे महत्या सेनया सह । द्रोणभीष्मौ रणे यत्तौ प्रत्युद्ययुररिन्दमौ

Then once more, a hair-raising battle broke out between your forces and the enemy, both sides striving for victory.
ततस्ते पार्थिवाः क्रुद्धाः फल्गुनं वीक्ष्य संयुगे। रथैरनेकसाहस्रैः समन्तात्पर्यवारयन्
Thereupon, the kings, angered upon seeing Phalguna in battle, surrounded him on all sides with many thousands of chariots.
अथैनं रथबृन्देन कोष्ठकीकृत्य भारत। शरैः सुबहुसाहस्रैः समन्तादभ्यवारयन्
Then, O Bharata, enclosing him with a mass of chariots, they assailed him from all sides with countless thousands of arrows.
शक्तीश्च विमलाकस्तीक्ष्णा गदाश्च परिघैः सह । प्रासान्परश्वथांश्चैव मुद्गरान्मुसलानपि
They hurled at him in battle sharp, spotless spears, maces along with iron clubs, lances, axes, mallets, and pestles.
चिक्षिषुः समरे क्रुद्धाः फल्गुनस्य रथं प्रति। शस्त्राणामथ तां वृष्टिं शलभानामिवायतिम्
Enraged, they sought to strike Phalguna's chariot in battle with that shower of weapons, like a swarm of locusts.
रुरोध सर्वतः पार्थः शरैः कनकभूषणैः । तत्र तल्लाघवं दृष्ट्वा बीभत्सोरतिमानुषम्
Partha blocked all of that on every side with arrows adorned with gold; seeing that extraordinary swiftness of Bibhatsu, surpassing human limits—
देवदानवगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः । साधुसाध्विति राजेन्द्र फल्गुनं प्रत्यपूजयन्
The gods, Danavas, Gandharvas, Pisacas, Nagas, and Rakshasas, O king, praised Phalguna, exclaiming, 'Well done! Well done!'
सात्यकिश्चाभिमन्युश्च महत्या सेकनया वृतौ । गान्धारान्समरे शूराञ्जग्मतुः सहसौबलान्
Satyaki and Abhimanyu, with a great force, attacked the brave Gandharas and the Saubala troops in battle.
तत्र सौबलकाः क्रुद्धा वार्ष्णेयस्य रथोत्तमम् । तिशलश्चिच्छिदुः क्रोधाच्छस्त्रैर्नानाविधैर्युधि
There, the Saubalas, enraged, shattered Satyaki's excellent chariot in battle with various kinds of weapons out of wrath.
सात्यकिस्तु रथं त्यक्त्वा वर्तमाने भयावहे । अभिमन्यो रथं तूर्णमारुरोह परंतपः
But Satyaki, abandoning his chariot amid the terrifying conflict, swiftly mounted Abhimanyu's chariot, that subduer of foes.
तावेकरथसंयुक्तौ सौबलेयस्य वाहिनीम् । व्यधमेतां शितैस्तूर्णं शरैःक सन्नतपर्वभिः
Then, united on a single chariot, the two quickly scattered the Saubala army with sharp, well-feathered arrows.
द्रोणभीष्मौ रणे यत्तौ धर्मराजस्य वाहिनीम् । नाशयेतां शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः कङ्कपत्रपरिच्छदैः
Drona and Bhishma, exerting themselves in battle, destroyed the army of the righteous king with sharp arrows tipped with vulture feathers.
