महाव्यूहः कलिङ्गानामेकेन मृदितस्त्वया । एवमुक्त्वा शिनेर्नप्ता दीर्घबाहुररिन्दम। रथाद्रथमभिद्रुत्य पर्यष्वजत पाण्डवम्
The great formation of the Kalingas was crushed by you alone. Having spoken thus, Sātyaki, the long-armed destroyer of foes, descended from his chariot and embraced the Pāṇḍava.
ततः स्वरथमास्थाय पुनरेव महारथः । तावकानवधीत्क्रुद्धो भीमस्य बलमादधत्
Then, mounting his own chariot again, the great warrior, angered, attacked your men, drawing strength from Bhīma.
ततोऽपराह्णभूयिष्ठे तस्मिन्नहनि भारत। रथनागाश्वपत्तीनां सादिनां च महाक्षये
Then, as the afternoon grew late on that day, O Bhārata, a great destruction befell the chariots, elephants, horses, and foot soldiers.
द्रोणपुत्रेण शल्येन कृपेण च महात्मना । समसज्जत पाञ्चाल्यस्त्रिभिरैतैर्महारथैः
The son of Droṇa, Śalya, and the great-souled Kṛpa engaged the Panchala, the three great warriors confronting him.
स लोकविदितानश्वान्निजघान महाबलः । द्रौणेः पाञ्चालदायादः शितैर्दशभिराशुगैः
That mighty warrior, heir of the Panchalas, struck the well-known horses of Drauṇi with ten sharp, swift arrows.
ततः शल्यरथं तूर्णमास्थाय हतवाहनः । द्रौणिः पाञ्चालदायादमभ्यवर्षदथेषुभिः
Then, mounting Śalya's chariot quickly after his own horses were slain, Drauṇi showered arrows upon the Panchala heir.
धृष्टद्युम्नं तु संयुक्तं द्रौणिना वीक्ष्य भारत। सौभद्रोऽभ्यपतत्तूर्णं विकिरन्निशिताञ्शरान्
Seeing Dhṛṣṭadyumna engaged with Drauṇi, O Bhārata, Saubhadra rushed swiftly, scattering sharp arrows.
स शल्यं प़ञ्चविंशत्या कृपं च नवभिः शरैः । अश्वत्थामानमष्टाभिर्विव्याध पुरुषर्षभः
That foremost man pierced Śalya with twenty-five arrows, Kṛpa with nine, and Aśvatthāman with eight.
आर्जुनिं तु ततस्तूर्णं द्रौणिर्विव्याध पत्रिणा। शल्योऽथ दशभिश्चैव कृपश्च निशितैस्त्रिभिः
Then Drauṇi quickly pierced Arjuna's son with an arrow, while Śalya struck him with ten, and Kṛpa with three sharp arrows.
लक्ष्मणस्तव पौत्रस्तु सौभद्रं समवस्थितम् । अभ्यवर्तत संहृष्टस्ततो युद्धमवर्तत
Lakṣmaṇa, your grandson, approached Saubhadra as he stood ready, rejoicing, and then battle commenced.
दौर्योधनिः सुसंक्रुद्धः सौभद्रं परवीरहा । विव्याध समरे राजंस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
The son of Duryodhana, greatly enraged, struck Saubhadra, slayer of foes, in battle, and it seemed wondrous.
अभिमन्युः सुसंक्रुद्धो भ्रातरं भरतर्षभ । शरैः पञ्चाशतै राजन्क्षिप्रहस्तोऽभ्यविध्यत
Abhimanyu, greatly enraged, struck his brother, O bull among the Bharatas, with fifty arrows, his hand moving swiftly.
लक्ष्मणोऽपि पुनस्तस्य धनुश्चिच्छेद पत्रिणा। मुष्टिदेशे महाराज ततस्ते चुक्रुशुर्जनाः
Lakṣmaṇa, in turn, cut Abhimanyu's bow with an arrow at the grip, O king, and the people cried out.
तद्विहाय धनुश्छिन्नं सौभद्रं परवीरहा। अन्यदादत्तवांश्चित्रं कार्मुकं वेगवत्तरम्
Leaving his broken bow behind, Saubhadra, slayer of foes, took up another, a splendid and swifter bow.
तौ तत्र समरे युक्तौ कृतप्रतिकृतैषिणौ । अन्योन्यं विशिस्वैस्तीक्ष्णैर्जघ्नतुः पुरुषर्षभौ
There, in that battle, those two, skilled in countering each other's attacks, the best among men, struck each other with exceedingly sharp weapons.
ततो दुर्योधनो राज दृष्ट्वा पुत्रं महारथम्। पीडितं तव पौत्रेण प्रायात्तत्र प्रजेश्वरः
Then, O King, Duryodhana, seeing his son, the great chariot-warrior, afflicted by your grandson, advanced there, O lord of the people.
सन्निवृत्ते तव सुते सर्व एव जनाधिपाः । आर्जुनिं रथवंशेन समन्तात्पर्यवारयन्
When your son withdrew, all the kings together surrounded Arjuna with their chariot divisions on every side.
स तैः परिवृतः शूरैः शूरो युधि सुदुर्जयैः । न स्म प्रव्यथते राजन्कृष्णतुल्यपराक्रमः
Surrounded in battle by those valiant and nearly unconquerable warriors, that hero, equal in prowess to Krishna, did not waver, O King.
सौभद्रमथ संसक्तं दृष्ट्वा तत्र धनंजयः । अभिदुद्राव वेगेन त्रातुकामः स्वमात्मजम्
Then Dhananjaya, seeing his son Abhimanyu engaged there, rushed forward with speed, desiring to protect his own son.
ततः सरथनागाश्वा भीष्मद्रोणपुरोगमाः । अभ्यवर्तन्त राजानः सहिताः सव्यसाचिनम्
Then all the kings, with their chariots, elephants, and horses, led by Bhishma and Drona, turned together towards Savyasacin.
उद्वूतं सहसा भौमं नागाश्वरथपत्तिभिः । दिवाकररथं प्राप्य रजस्तीव्रमदृश्यत
The dust, suddenly raised on the earth by elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers, became dense upon reaching the chariot of the radiant one.
तानि नागसहस्राणि भूमिपालशतानि च। तस्य बाणपथं प्राप्य नाभ्यवर्तन्त सर्वशः
Those thousands of elephants and hundreds of kings, upon entering the path of his arrows, did not advance any further at all.
प्रणेदुः सर्वभूतानि बभूवुस्तिमिरा दिशः। कुरूणां चानयस्तीव्रः समदृश्यत दारुणः
All creatures wailed, the directions became dark, and a fierce calamity appeared among the Kurus, dreadful to behold.
नाप्यन्तरिक्षं न दिशो न भूमिर्न च भास्करः । प्रजज्ञे भरतश्रेष्ठ सस्त्रसङ्घैः किरीटिनः
Neither the sky, nor the directions, nor the earth, nor the sun, O best of Bharatas, could be seen, covered by the multitude of weapons of the diademed one.
सादिता रथनागाश्च हताश्वा रथिनो रणे। विप्रद्रुतरथाः केचिद्दृश्यन्ते रथयूथपाः
Chariots and elephants were struck down, horses slain, and charioteers killed in battle; some chariot leaders were seen fleeing with their chariots broken.
विरथा रथिनश्चान्ये धावमानाः समन्ततः । तत्रतत्रैव दृश्यन्ते सायुधाः साङ्गदैर्भुजैः
Other charioteers, deprived of their chariots, were seen here and there running in all directions, still armed, with their weapons and armlets.
हयारोहा हयांस्त्यक्त्वा गजारोहाश्च दन्तिनः । अर्जुनस्य भयाद्राजन्समन्ताद्विप्रदुद्रुवुः
Horsemen abandoned their horses, and elephant riders their elephants; out of fear of Arjuna, O King, they fled in all directions.
रथेभ्यश्च गजेभ्यश्च हयेभ्यश्च नराधिपाः । पतिताः पात्यमानाश्च दृश्यन्तेऽर्जुनसायकैः
From chariots, elephants, and horses, the kings were seen falling and being struck down by Arjuna's arrows.
सगदानुद्यतान्बाहून्सखङ्गांश्च विशांपते । सप्रासांश्च सतूणीरान्सशरान्सशरासनान्
O lord of men, Arjuna cut down with his fierce arrows the raised arms of warriors wielding maces, swords, spears, quivers, arrows, and bows.
साङ्कुशाकन्सपताकांश्च तत्रतत्रार्जुनो नृणाम् । निचकर्त शरैरुग्रै रौद्रं वपुरधारयत्
There and there, Arjuna severed with his terrible arrows the arms of men holding goads, banners, and other weapons, assuming a fearsome form.
