And Bhima there set in motion a river, born from the Kalingas, thick with flesh and blood, its waters flowing with gore.
Between the armies of the Kalingas and the Pandavas, mighty Bhimasena crossed that impassable river.
Seeing Bhimasena thus, your men cried out, O King: 'It is Time itself, in the form of Bhima, fighting the Kalingas in battle!'
Then Bhishma, son of Shantanu, hearing that roar on the battlefield, quickly advanced toward Bhima, his arrayed troops surrounding him.
Satyaki, Bhimasena, and Dhrishtadyumna, son of Prishata, rushed at Bhishma's chariot, adorned with gold.
All of them surrounded Ganga's son with force in battle, and with three fierce arrows each, honored Bhishma with great energy.
But your father Devavrata, striving among mighty archers, struck all of them back with three straight arrows each.
Then, with a thousand arrows, he repelled the great warriors and struck down Bhima's horses, armored in gold, with his shafts.
Standing on his chariot, his horses slain, the valiant Bhimasena hurled his spear with force at Ganga's son's chariot.
But your father Devavrata, in battle, cut that spear into three pieces before it reached him, and it fell to the earth, shattered.
Then, grasping a heavy iron mace, Bhimasena, strong as a bull among men, quickly leapt forward.
Satyaki too, out of affection for Bhima, swiftly struck down Ganga's charioteer with arrows.
But Bhishma, best of chariot-warriors, when his charioteer was slain, was carried away from the field by those wind-driven horses.
Then, O King, when the great-souled Bhishma had withdrawn, Bhimasena blazed forth like fire consuming a heap of dry grass.
Having slain all the Kalingas, he stood in the midst of the army; none of your men, O bull of Bharata, dared to approach him.
Dhrishtadyumna, best of chariot-warriors, mounted the glorious Bhima onto his own chariot, in the sight of all the troops.
Honored by the Panchalis and the Matsyas, O bull among the Bharatas, Dhṛṣṭadyumna embraced Sātyaki and then approached him.
Then Sātyaki, steadfast in valor, spoke to Bhīmasena, delighting him like a tiger among the Yadus, in the presence of Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
By fortune, the king of the Kalingas, the prince Ketumāna, Śakradeva the Kalinga, and the Kalingas have been slain in battle.
By the strength and power of your own arms, amidst elephants, horses, and chariots, you, greatest among men, have prevailed, attended by steadfast warriors.
The great formation of the Kalingas was crushed by you alone. Having spoken thus, Sātyaki, the long-armed destroyer of foes, descended from his chariot and embraced the Pāṇḍava.
Then, mounting his own chariot again, the great warrior, angered, attacked your men, drawing strength from Bhīma.
Then, as the afternoon grew late on that day, O Bhārata, a great destruction befell the chariots, elephants, horses, and foot soldiers.
The son of Droṇa, Śalya, and the great-souled Kṛpa engaged the Panchala, the three great warriors confronting him.
That mighty warrior, heir of the Panchalas, struck the well-known horses of Drauṇi with ten sharp, swift arrows.
Then, mounting Śalya's chariot quickly after his own horses were slain, Drauṇi showered arrows upon the Panchala heir.
Seeing Dhṛṣṭadyumna engaged with Drauṇi, O Bhārata, Saubhadra rushed swiftly, scattering sharp arrows.
That foremost man pierced Śalya with twenty-five arrows, Kṛpa with nine, and Aśvatthāman with eight.
Then Drauṇi quickly pierced Arjuna's son with an arrow, while Śalya struck him with ten, and Kṛpa with three sharp arrows.
Lakṣmaṇa, your grandson, approached Saubhadra as he stood ready, rejoicing, and then battle commenced.
