In the battle, seeing Bhishma, the great chariot-warrior, swiftly breaking through, the Pandava caused the elephants, whose riders had been slain, to fall in the fight.
In the ranks, the wounded, roaring, and pierced by arrows, scattered their own divisions, like clouds driven apart by the wind.
Then Bhima, mighty-armed and strong, holding a sword, rejoicing, blew his conch with a great sound.
He shook the hearts of all the Kalinga armies, scorcher of foes, and a great confusion entered the Kalingas.
The armies and all the vehicles trembled everywhere, O King, because of Bhima in battle, as if by a lordly elephant.
As he moved swiftly along many paths, running here and there, and sometimes leaping up, a great confusion arose.
The army, terrified by Bhimasena, shook as if a vast lake were being churned by a mighty whirlpool, crowded and agitated.
When all were routed by Bhima's wondrous deeds, and as they turned back and fled in groups,
Among all the Kalinga warriors, the commander of the Pandava forces, Parshata, said to his own divisions, 'Fight!'
Hearing the general's command, the troops led by Shikhandin turned towards Bhima, with their striking chariot divisions.
And Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, the Pandava, supported them all from behind with a great elephant division, dark as a cloud.
Thus, having rallied all his own divisions, Parshata took position at Bhimasena's rear, surrounded by noble warriors.
Indeed, in this world, there is no one dearer to the king of the Panchalas than Bhima and Satyaki, who are more beloved than life itself.
There, among the Kalingas, Parshata, the slayer of enemy heroes, saw Bhimasena, mighty-armed and destroyer of foes, moving about.
The scorcher of foes roared in many ways, O King, and was filled with joy; he blew his conch in battle and roared like a lion.
And seeing the golden-adorned chariot of Parshata, drawn by Pārāvata horses and bearing the Kovidara banner, Bhimasena took heart.
Dhrishtadyumna, perceiving that Bhimasena, of immeasurable soul, was being attacked by the Kalingas, advanced in battle to protect him.
From a distance, Dhrishtadyumna and Vrikodara, seeing Satyaki, those two heroic and resolute warriors, engaged the Kalingas in battle.
Then Satyaki, the best among victors, swiftly went there and seized the rear of the chariots of Partha and Parshata, O bull among men.
Armed with armor, performing a dreadful deed, with bow and arrows in hand, he assumed a fierce demeanor and looked toward the Kalingas.
And Bhima there set in motion a river, born from the Kalingas, thick with flesh and blood, its waters flowing with gore.
Between the armies of the Kalingas and the Pandavas, mighty Bhimasena crossed that impassable river.
Seeing Bhimasena thus, your men cried out, O King: 'It is Time itself, in the form of Bhima, fighting the Kalingas in battle!'
Then Bhishma, son of Shantanu, hearing that roar on the battlefield, quickly advanced toward Bhima, his arrayed troops surrounding him.
Satyaki, Bhimasena, and Dhrishtadyumna, son of Prishata, rushed at Bhishma's chariot, adorned with gold.
All of them surrounded Ganga's son with force in battle, and with three fierce arrows each, honored Bhishma with great energy.
But your father Devavrata, striving among mighty archers, struck all of them back with three straight arrows each.
Then, with a thousand arrows, he repelled the great warriors and struck down Bhima's horses, armored in gold, with his shafts.
Standing on his chariot, his horses slain, the valiant Bhimasena hurled his spear with force at Ganga's son's chariot.
But your father Devavrata, in battle, cut that spear into three pieces before it reached him, and it fell to the earth, shattered.
