The Pandava struck down even those with banners, with his sword, as they leapt up and ran in all directions for a moment, those renowned warriors.
People marveled at his wondrous movements in battle; he struck some with his foot, scattered others, and battered yet others.
With his sword he cut down some, with his roar he terrified others, and with the force of his thighs he struck yet others down to the ground.
Others, seeing him, perished from fear; thus that vast army of the mighty Kalingas was thrown into confusion.
Surrounding Bhishma on the battlefield, they advanced against Bhimasena; then, at the head of the Kalinga troops, O bull of the Bharatas—
Beholding Shrutayush, Bhimasena rushed forward; seeing him approach, the Kalinga struck with nine arrows.
Shrutayush, of immeasurable spirit, pierced Bhimasena in the chest; struck by the Kalinga's arrows, he was tormented like an elephant wounded by goads.
Bhimasena blazed with anger like a fire fed with fuel; then Ashoka brought forth a chariot adorned with gold.
The charioteer quickly brought the chariot to Bhima; mounting that swift chariot, the son of Kunti, slayer of enemies—
Rushed at the Kalinga, crying, 'Stop! Stop!' Then Shrutayush, powerful and enraged, aimed sharp arrows at Bhima.
In his fury, displaying skill with his hands, he released sharp arrows at Bhima, nine in number, from his excellent bow.
Struck by those nine sharp arrows released by the great-souled Kalinga, Bhima cried out loudly, like a serpent struck by a staff.
Then, enraged, the mighty Bhima, best of the strong, drew his bow and slew the Kalinga prince with seven iron arrows.
With two razor-headed arrows he struck down the two mighty protectors of the Kalinga's chariot wheels, and sent Satyadeva and Satya to the abode of Yama.
Then again, with three sharp arrows, Bhima sent Ketumanta to the abode of Yama in battle.
Then the armored Kalingas, unable to bear Bhimasena, blocked him with their battalions of countless heroic Kshatriyas.
Then, O king, the Kalingas showered Bhimasena with spears, maces, swords, lances, javelins, and axes.
He repelled that terrible shower of arrows that had arisen, and, seizing his mace with force, the mighty warrior charged in.
Bhima sent seven hundred warriors to the abode of Yama; and again, the crusher of foes sent two thousand more Kalingas to the realm of death.
He dispatched them to the world of death, and it seemed a marvel; thus, again and again, he destroyed those battalions of the Kalingas.
In the battle, seeing Bhishma, the great chariot-warrior, swiftly breaking through, the Pandava caused the elephants, whose riders had been slain, to fall in the fight.
In the ranks, the wounded, roaring, and pierced by arrows, scattered their own divisions, like clouds driven apart by the wind.
Then Bhima, mighty-armed and strong, holding a sword, rejoicing, blew his conch with a great sound.
He shook the hearts of all the Kalinga armies, scorcher of foes, and a great confusion entered the Kalingas.
The armies and all the vehicles trembled everywhere, O King, because of Bhima in battle, as if by a lordly elephant.
As he moved swiftly along many paths, running here and there, and sometimes leaping up, a great confusion arose.
The army, terrified by Bhimasena, shook as if a vast lake were being churned by a mighty whirlpool, crowded and agitated.
When all were routed by Bhima's wondrous deeds, and as they turned back and fled in groups,
Among all the Kalinga warriors, the commander of the Pandava forces, Parshata, said to his own divisions, 'Fight!'
Hearing the general's command, the troops led by Shikhandin turned towards Bhima, with their striking chariot divisions.
