चिच्छेद सहसा राजन्नसंभ्रान्तो वरासिना। नित्यत्य तु रणे भीमस्तोमरान्वै चतुर्दश
Suddenly, O King, he cleaved them with his excellent sword, unshaken; Bhima destroyed those fourteen spears in battle.
भानुमन्तं ततो भीमः प्राद्रवत्पुरुषर्षभः । भानुमांस्तु ततो भीमं शरवर्षेण च्छादयन्
Then Bhima, the foremost among men, rushed at Bhānumanta; Bhānumanta covered Bhima with a shower of arrows.
ननाद बलवन्नादं नादयानो नभस्तलम्। न च तं ममृषे भीमः सिंहनादं महाहवे
He roared with a powerful cry, resounding through the sky; but Bhima did not tolerate that lion's roar in the great battle.
ततः शब्देन महता विननाद महास्वनः। तेन नादेन वित्रस्ता कलिङ्गानां वरूथिनी
Then, with a great sound, a mighty roar echoed; by that roar, the Kalinga troops were terrified.
न भीमं समरे मेने मानुषं भरतर्षभ । ततो भीमो महाबाहुर्नर्दित्वा विपुलं स्वनम्
In battle, O best of Bharatas, they did not consider Bhima to be human; then Bhima, of mighty arms, roared with a tremendous voice.
सासिर्वेगवदाप्लुत्य दन्ताभ्यां वारणोत्तमम् । आरुरोह ततो मध्यं नागराजस्य मारिष
Leaping swiftly with his sword, he climbed onto the best elephant, grasping it with his teeth; then, O Māriṣa, he mounted the middle of the elephant king.
ततो मुमोच कालिङ्गः शक्तिं तामकरोद्द्वीधा । खङ्गेन पृथुना मध्ये भानुमन्तमथाच्छिनत्
Then Kalinga released a spear, which he split in two; with his broad sword, he struck Bhānumanta in the middle.
सोऽन्तरायुधिनं हत्वा राजपुत्रमरिन्दमः। गुरुभारसहे स्कन्धे नागस्यासिमपातयत्
Having slain the prince, the destroyer of enemies dropped the heavy sword onto the elephant's shoulder, which could bear great weight.
छिन्नस्कन्धः स विनदन्पपात गजयूथपः। आरुगणः सिन्धुवेगन सानुमानिव पर्वतः
With its shoulder cut, the elephant leader fell down, roaring; like a mountain peak struck by the force of a rushing river.
ततस्तस्मादप्लुत्य गजाद्भारत भारतः। खङ्गपाणिरदीनात्मा तस्थौ भूमौ सुदंशितः
Then, leaping down from the elephant, O Bharata, the son of Bharata, sword in hand, fearless, stood firmly on the ground, well-sharpened.
स चचार बहून्मार्गानभितः पातयन्गजान् । अग्निचक्रमिवाविद्धं सर्वतः प्रत्यदृश्यत
He moved through many paths, striking down elephants nearby; like a fiery wheel, he was seen everywhere.
अश्वबृन्देषु नागेषु रथानीकेषु चाभिभूः । पदातीनां च सङ्घेषु विनिघ्नञ्शोणितोक्षितः
Among groups of horses, elephants, and chariots, and in the ranks of foot soldiers, he struck them down, drenched in blood.
श्येनवद्व्यचरद्भीमो रणेऽरिषु बलोत्कटः। छिन्दंस्तेषाकं शरीराणि शिरांसि च महाबलः
Bhima, fierce in battle, moved among the enemies like a hawk, cutting their bodies and heads with his great strength.
खङघ्गेकन शितधारेण संयुगे गजयोधिनाम्। पदातिरेकः संक्रुद्धः शत्रूणां भयवर्धनः
With his sword, sharp-edged, in battle among elephant warriors, the enraged foot soldier increased the terror of his foes.
संमाहयामास स तान्कालान्तकयमोपमः। मूढाश्च ते तमेवाजौ विनदन्तः समाद्रवन्
He, fierce as Death at the end of time, struck them down; those bewildered men, roaring, rushed at him in battle.
सासिमुत्तमवेगेन विचरन्तं महारणे। निकृत्य रथिनां चाजौ रथेषाश्च युगानि च
With supreme speed, he moved through the great battlefield, cutting down charioteers and the yokes of chariots in the fight.
जघान रथिनश्चापि बलवान्रिपुमर्दनः। भीमसेनश्चरन्मार्गान्सुबहून्प्रत्यदृश्यत
The mighty Bhimasena, crusher of foes, struck down charioteers and was seen moving along many paths.
भ्रान्तमाविद्धमुद्भ्रान्तमाप्लुतं प्रसृतं प्लुतम् । संपातं समुदीर्णं च दर्शयामास पाण्डवः
The Pandava displayed leaping, wounded, reeling, springing, running, and falling warriors, and those who had risen up in the fray.
केचिदग्रासिना छिन्नाः पाण्डवेन महात्मना। विनेदुर्भिन्नमर्माणो निपेतुश्च गतासवः
Some, cut down by the noble Pandava's sword, screamed as their vital organs were pierced and fell lifeless.
छइन्नदन्ताग्रहस्ताश्च भिन्नकुम्भास्तथाऽपरे । वियोधाः स्वान्यनीकानि जघ्नुर्भारत वारणाः
Some elephants, with tusks and trunks severed, and others with split domes, attacked their own ranks, O Bharata.
निपेतुरुर्व्यां च तथा विनदन्तो महारवान्। छिन्नांश्च तोमरान्राजन्महामात्रशिरांसि च
Roaring loudly, they too fell to the ground; O King, spears and the heads of great elephant-drivers were also cut off.
परिस्तोमान्विचित्रांश्च कक्ष्याश्च कनकोज्ज्वलाः। ग्रैवेयाण्यथ शक्तीश्च पताकाः कणपांस्तथा
Golden, shining breastplates, ornate belts, collars, lances, banners, and mail-coats were seen there.
तूणीरानथ यन्त्राणि धनूंषि च। भिन्दिपालानि शुभ्राणि तोत्राणि चाङ्कुशैः सह
Quivers, machines, bows, shining slings, and goads with hooks were also scattered about.
घण्टाश्च विविधा राजन्हेमगर्भान्त्सरूनपि । पततः पातितांश्चैव पश्यामः सह सादिभिः
And various bells, O King, some filled with gold, were seen falling and already fallen, along with their fittings.
छिन्नगात्रावरकरैर्निहतैश्चाप वारणैः ।। आसीद्भूमिःक समास्तीर्णा पतितैर्भूधरैरिव
The earth was covered with elephants whose limbs and trunks were cut, and with slain elephants, like mountains fallen to the ground.
विमृद्यैवं महानागान्ममर्दाश्वान्महाबलः । अश्वारोहवरांश्चैव पातयामास संयुगे
Having crushed those great elephants, the mighty one also struck down powerful horses and their best riders in the battle.
तद्धोरमभवद्युद्धं तस्य तेषां च भारत। खलीनान्यथ योक्राणि कक्ष्याश्च कनकोज्ज्वलाः
That battle between him and them became terrible, O Bharata; bits, yokes, and golden belts were seen there.
परिस्तोमाश्च प्रासाश्च ऋष्टयश्च महाधनाः। कवचान्यथ चर्माणि चित्राण्यास्तरणानि च
Breastplates, spears, mighty javelins, armor, shields, and decorated coverings were also seen.
तत्रतत्रापविद्धआनि व्यदृश्यन्त महाहवे। प्रासैर्यन्त्रैर्विचित्रैश्च शस्त्रैश्च विमलैस्तथा
Here and there on the great battlefield, scattered spears, machines, and shining, various weapons were seen.
स चक्रे वसुधां कीर्णां शबलैः कुसुमैरिव । आप्लुत्य रथिनः काश्चित्परामृश्य महाबलः
He made the earth appear strewn with speckled flowers, leaping upon some charioteers and striking them, that mighty one.
