निवारितस्तु द्रोणेन धृष्टद्युम्नो महारथः । न्यावारयच्छरौघांस्तांश्चर्मणा कृतहस्तवत्
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the great chariot-warrior, was checked by Droṇa, but he blocked those showers of arrows with his shield, wielding it skillfully in his hand.
ततो भीमो महाबाहुः सहसाऽभ्यपतद्बली । साहाय्यकारी समरे पार्षतस्य महात्मनः
Then Bhīma, mighty-armed and powerful, swiftly advanced to aid the noble son of Pṛṣata in battle.
स द्रोमं निशितैर्बाणै राजन्विव्याध सप्तभिः । पार्षतं च रथं तूर्णं स्वकमारोहयत्तदा
He struck Droṇa, O King, with seven sharp arrows, and then quickly brought Pārṣata onto his own chariot.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजन्कलिङ्गं समचोदयत्। सैन्येन महता युक्तं भारद्वाजस्य रक्षणे
Then, O King, Duryodhana urged the Kaliṅga army, equipped with a great force, to protect the son of Bhāradvāja.
ततः सा महती सेन कलिङ्गानां जनेश्वर । भीममभ्युद्ययौ तूर्णं तव पुत्रस्य शासनात्
Thereupon, that vast army of the Kaliṅgas, O lord of people, swiftly advanced against Bhīma at your son's command.
पाञ्चाल्यमथ संत्यज्य द्रोणोऽपि रथिनां वरः। विराटद्रुपदौ वृद्धौ वारयामास संयुगे
Droṇa, the foremost of chariot-warriors, then left the son of Pāñcālī and began to check the aged Virāṭa and Drupada in battle.
धृष्टद्युम्नोऽपि समरे धर्मराजानमभ्ययात्। ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तुमुलं रोमहर्षणम्
Dhṛṣṭadyumna also, in the battle, approached King Yudhiṣṭhira; then a fierce and hair-raising fight broke out.
कलिङ्गानां च समरे भीष्मस्य च महात्मनः । जगतः प्रक्षयकरं घोररूपं भयावहम्
Between the Kaliṅgas and the great-souled Bhīṣma, a dreadful, terrifying battle began, bringing destruction upon the world.
मम पुत्रसमादिष्टः कलिङ्गोः वाहिनीपतिः। कथमद्भुतकर्माणं भीमसेनं महाबलम्
Commanded by my son, how did the commander of the Kaliṅga army engage the mighty Bhīmasena, who performs wondrous deeds?
चरन्तं गदया वीर दण्डहस्तमिवान्तकम् । योधयामास समरे कलिङ्गः सह सेनया
That hero, wielding his mace like Death himself with a staff in hand, was fought in battle by the Kaliṅga king along with his army.
पुत्रेण तव राजेन्द्र स तथोक्तो महाबलः । महत्या सेनया गुप्तः प्रायाद्भीमरथं प्रति
Then, O king, your son, thus addressed, mighty as he was, set out against Bhīma's chariot, protected by a great army.
तामापतन्तीं महतीं कलिङ्गानां महाचमूम्। रथाश्वनागकलिलां प्रगृहीतमहायुधाम्
That vast force of the Kaliṅgas, advancing, filled with chariots, horses, and elephants, and armed with great weapons—
भीमसेनः कलिङ्गानामार्च्छद्भारत वाहिनीम् । केतुमन्तं च नैषादिमायान्तं सह चेदिभिः
Bhīmasena attacked the Kaliṅga army, O Bhārata, as well as Ketumat, the Niṣāda king, who was advancing with the Cedis.
ततः श्रुतायुः संक्रुद्धो राज्ञा केतुमता सह। आससाद रणे भीमं व्यूढानीकेषु चेदिषु
Then Śrutāyu, enraged, together with King Ketumat, confronted Bhīma in battle, as the Cedis formed their ranks.
रथैरनेकसाहस्रैः कलिङ्गानां नराधिप । अयुतेन गजानां च निषादैःक सह केतुमान्
With many thousands of chariots of the Kaliṅgas, ten thousand elephants, and the Niṣādas, Ketumat surrounded Bhīmasena on all sides in battle.
भिमसेनं रणे राजन्समन्तात्पर्यवारयत् । चेदिमत्स्यकरूषाश्च भीमसेनपदानुगाः
The Cedis, Matsyas, and Karūṣas, followers of Bhīmasena, also rushed upon the Niṣādas and their kings in battle.
अभ्यधावन्त समरे निषादान्सह राजभिः । ततः प्रववृते युद्धं घोररूपं भयावहम्
Then a dreadful and terrifying battle broke out, as the warriors, intent on slaying each other, could no longer distinguish friend from foe.
न प्राजानन्त योधाः स्वान्परस्परजिघांसया । घोरमासीत्ततो युद्धं भीमस्य सहसा परैः
Thus, a fierce battle suddenly arose between Bhīma and his adversaries.
यथेन्द्रस्य महाराज महत्या दैत्यसेनया। तस्य सैन्यस्य संग्रामे युध्यमानस्य भारत
Just as, O great king, Indra faced the mighty army of the Daityas, so too did that army, engaged in battle, fight, O descendant of Bharata.
बभूव सुमहाञ्शब्दः सागरस्येव गर्जतः। अन्योन्यं स्म तदा योधा विकर्षन्तो विशांपते
A tremendous sound arose, like the roaring of the ocean; at that time, O lord of men, the warriors dragged each other fiercely.
महीं चक्रुश्चितां सर्वां शशलोहितसन्निभाम् । योधांश्च स्वान्परान्वापि नाभ्यजानञ्जिघांसया
They made the entire earth appear as if covered, resembling the color of rabbit's blood; and the warriors, whether their own or others, did not recognize each other in their desire to kill.
स्वानप्याददते स्वाश्च शूराः परमदुर्जयाः। विमर्दः सुमहानासीदल्पानां बहुभिः सह
Even the mighty, invincible heroes seized their own men, and their own forces; a great struggle arose between the many and the few.
कलिङ्गैः सह चैदीनां निषादैश्च विशांपते । कृत्वा पुरुषकारं तु यथाशक्ति महाबलाः
Along with the Kalingas, the Cedis, and the Nishadas, O lord of men, those of great strength exerted themselves with all their might, displaying their valor.
भीमसेनं परित्यज्य संन्यवर्तनक्त चेदयः। सर्वैः कलिङ्गैरासन्नः सन्निवृत्तेषु चेदिषु
Abandoning Bhimasena, the Cedis turned back; all the Kalingas drew near as the Cedis withdrew.
स्वबाहुबलमस्थाय अभ्यवर्षन्त पाण्डवम् । न चचाल रथोपस्थाद्भीमसेनो महाबलः
Relying on the strength of their own arms, they showered the Pandava with attacks; yet Bhimasena, of immense strength, did not move from his chariot.
शितैरवाकिरद्बाणैः कलिङ्गानां वरूथिनीम् । कालिङ्गस्तु महेष्वासः पुत्रश्चास्य महारथः
With sharp arrows, he struck the ranks of the Kalingas; and the Kalinga, a mighty archer, together with his son, a great chariot-warrior,
शक्रदेव इति ख्यातो जघ्नतुः पाण्डवं शरैः। ततो भीमो महाबाहुर्विधुन्वन्रुचिरं धनुः
Known as Shakradeva, they attacked the Pandava with arrows; then Bhima, of mighty arms, brandished his splendid bow.
योधयामास कालिङ्गं स्वबाहुबलमाश्रितः। शक्रदेवस्तु समरे विसृजन्सायकान्बहून्
He fought with the Kalinga, relying on the strength of his own arms; while Shakradeva, in battle, released many arrows.
अश्वाञ्जघान समरे भीमसेनस्य सायकैः। तं दृष्ट्वा विरथं तत्र भीमसेनमरिन्दमम्
He struck the horses of Bhimasena in battle with arrows; seeing Bhimasena deprived of his chariot there, the destroyer of enemies,
शक्रदेवोऽभिदुद्राव शरैरवकिरञ्सितैः। भीमस्योपरि राजेन्द्र शक्रदेवो महाबलः
Shakradeva rushed forward, showering him with sharp arrows; upon Bhima, O king, Shakradeva, of great strength,
