सुशर्माणं नरव्याघ्रश्चेकितानो महारथः । अभ्यद्रवत्सुसंक्रुद्धः पाण्डवार्थे पराक्रमी
Cekitāna, the great chariot-warrior and tiger among men, fiercely charged at Suśarman, displaying his prowess for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas.
शुशर्मा तु महाराज चेकितानं महारथम् । महता शरवर्षेण वारयामास संयुगे
But Suśarman, O great king, checked the mighty chariot-warrior Cekitāna in battle with a great shower of arrows.
चेकितानोऽपि संरब्धः सुशर्माणां महाहवे । प्राच्छादयत्तमिषुभिर्महामेघ इवाचलम्
Cekitāna, enraged in the great battle, covered Suśarman with arrows, like a great cloud covering a mountain.
शकुनिः प्रतिविन्ध्यं तु पराक्रान्तं पराक्रमी । अभ्यद्रवत राजेन्द्र मत्तः सिंह इव द्विपम्
The valiant Śakuni charged at the mighty Prativindhya, O king, like a maddened lion rushing at an elephant.
यौधिष्ठिरस्तु संक्रुद्धः सौबलं निशितैः शरैः । व्यदारयत संग्रामे मघवानिव दानवम्
Yudhishthira's son, enraged, pierced Saubala (Śakuni) with sharp arrows in battle, like Maghavan (Indra) piercing a demon.
शकुनिः प्रतिविन्ध्यं तु प्रतिविध्यन्तमाहवे। व्यदारयन्महाप्राज्ञः शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः
Śakuni, the wise one, struck Prativindhya, who was striking back in battle, with arrows whose shafts were well-bent.
सुदक्षिणं तु राजेन्द्र काम्भोजानां महारथम् । श्रुतकर्मा पराक्रान्तमभ्यद्रवत संयुगे
O king, Shrutakarman, the mighty chariot-warrior, charged in battle against Sudakshina, the great car-warrior of the Kambojas.
सुदक्षिणस्तु समरे साहदेविं महारथम् । विद्ध्वा नाकम्पयत वै मैनाकमिव पर्वतम्
But Sudakshina, in the fight, struck Sahadeva, the great car-warrior, yet did not shake him, just as Mount Mainaka is unmoved.
श्रुतकर्मा ततः क्रुद्धः काम्भोजानां महारथम् । शरैर्बहुभिरानर्च्छद्दारयन्निव सर्वशः
Then Shrutakarman, enraged, showered many arrows upon Sudakshina, the great chariot-warrior of the Kambojas, as if tearing him apart completely.
इरावानथ संक्रुद्धः श्रुतायुषमरिन्दमम् । प्रत्युद्ययौ रणे यत्तो यत्तरूपं परंतपः
Then Iravan, filled with wrath, prepared himself and advanced in battle against Shrutayus, the destroyer of enemies.
आर्जुनिस्तस्य समरे हयान्हत्वा महारथः । ननाद बलवान्नादं तत्सैन्यं प्रत्यपूरयत्
Arjuna, the mighty car-warrior, slew the horses of Shrutayus in battle, and roared loudly, filling that army with his sound.
श्रुतायुस्तु ततः क्रुद्धः फाल्गुनेः समरे हयान्। निजघान गदाग्रेण ततो युद्धमवर्तत
Then Shrutayu, enraged, struck Arjuna's horses in battle with the tip of his mace; then the fight continued.
विन्दानिविन्दावावन्त्यौ कुन्तिभोजं महारथम् । ससेनं ससुतं वीरं संसस?ञ्जतुराहवे
Vindha and Anuvindha of Avanti together attacked Kuntibhoja, the great car-warrior, along with his army and son, in the battle.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम तयोर्घोरं पराक्रमम् । अयुध्येतां स्थिरौ भूत्वा महत्या सेनया सह
There we beheld a wondrous sight: those two displayed terrible valor, standing firm and fighting with the great army.
अनुविन्दस्तु गदया कुन्तिभोजमताडयत्। कुन्तिभोजश्च तं तूर्णं शरव्रातैरवाकिरत्
Anuvinda struck Kuntibhoja with his mace, and Kuntibhoja quickly covered him with a shower of arrows.
कुन्तिभोजसुतश्चापि विन्दं विव्याध सायकैः । स च तं प्रतिविव्याध तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
And the son of Kuntibhoja pierced Vinda with arrows, and he in turn struck him back; it was a marvelous sight.
केकया भ्रातरः पञ्च गान्धारान्पञ्च मारिष । ससैन्यास्ते ससैन्यांश्च योधयामासुराहवे
O best of men, the five brothers of Kekaya fought the five Gandharas, each with their armies, in the battle.
वीरबाहुश्च ते पुत्रो वैराटिं रथसत्तमम् । उत्तरं योधयामास विव्याध निशितैः शरैः
Virabahu, your son, fought Uttara, the foremost of chariot-warriors from the Matsyas, and pierced him with sharp arrows.
उत्तरश्चापि तं वीरं विव्याध निशितैः शरैः । चेदिराट् समरे राजन्नुलूकं समभिद्रवत्
Uttara also pierced that hero with sharp arrows; and the king of Chedi, in battle, rushed against Uluka.
तथैव शरवर्षेण उलूकं समविद्ध्यत । उलूकश्चापि तं बाणैर्निशितैर्लोमवाहिभिः
In the same way, he struck Uluka with a shower of arrows, and Uluka in turn pierced him with keen, flesh-tearing shafts.
तयोर्युद्धं समभवद्धोररूपं विशांते । दारयेतां सुसंक्रुद्धावन्योन्यमपराजितौ
Their battle became fierce and terrible to behold, as both, greatly enraged and undefeated, wounded each other.
एवं द्वन्द्वसहस्राणि रथवारणवाजिनाम् । पदातीनां च समरे तव तेषां च संकुले
Thus, thousands of duels took place among charioteers, elephants, horsemen, and foot-soldiers, in that tumultuous battle between your forces and theirs.
मुहूर्तमिव तद्युद्धमासीन्मधुरदर्शनम् । तत उन्मत्तवद्राजन्न प्राज्ञायत किंचन
For a moment, that battle appeared pleasing to the eye, O king; then, like madmen, nothing could be distinguished any longer.
गजो गजेन समरे रथिनं च रथी ययौ । अश्वोऽश्वं समभिप्रायात्पदातिश्च पदातिनम्
In battle, elephant met elephant, chariot-warrior faced chariot-warrior, horse confronted horse, and foot-soldier engaged foot-soldier.
ततो युद्धं सुदुर्धर्षं व्याकुलं समपद्यत। शूराणां समरे तत्र समासाद्येतरेतरम्
Then a most fierce and tumultuous battle arose, as the heroes confronted each other on the field.
तत्र देवर्षयः सिद्धाश्चारणाश्च समागताः । प्रेक्षन्त तद्रणं घोरं देवासुरसमं भुवि
There, divine sages, perfected beings, and celestial bards assembled, watching that terrible battle on earth, equal to one between gods and demons.
ततो दन्तिसहस्राणि र्थानां चापि मारिष। अश्वौघाः पुरुषौघाश्च विपरीतं समाययुः
Then, O great one, thousands of elephants, chariots, torrents of horses, and masses of men approached from both sides.
तत्रतत्र प्रदृश्यन्ते रथवारणपत्तयः । सादिनश्च नरव्याघ्र युध्यमाना मुहुर्मुहुः
Here and there were seen chariots, elephants, and infantry, as well as horsemen, O tiger among men, fighting again and again.
राजञ्शतसहस्राणि तत्रतत्र पदातिनाम् । निर्मर्यादं प्रयुद्धानि तत्ते वक्ष्यामि भारत
O king, tens of thousands of foot soldiers fought everywhere without restraint; I shall tell you of them, O descendant of Bharata.
न पुत्रः पितरं जज्ञे पिता वा पुत्रमौरसम् । न भ्राता भ्रातरं तत्र स्वस्त्रीयं न च मातुलः
There, a son did not recognize his own father, nor a father his true-born son; neither did a brother know his brother, nor a maternal uncle his nephew.
