ततो मद्रेश्वरं राजा शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः । छादयामास संक्रुद्धस्तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्
Then the king, enraged, covered the lord of the Madras with arrows having well-feathered shafts, and cried out, 'Stand, stand!'
धृष्टद्युम्नस्ततो द्रोणमभ्यद्रवत भारत। तस्य द्रोणः सुसंक्रुद्धः परासुकरणं दृढम्
Thereafter, O descendant of Bharata, Dhṛṣṭadyumna rushed at Droṇa, and Droṇa, greatly enraged, firmly resolved to defeat him.
त्रिधा चिच्छेद समरे पाञ्चाल्यस्य तु कार्मुकम् । शरं चैव महाघोरं कालदण्डमिवापरम्
In the battle, Droṇa cut the bow of the son of Pāñcālī into three pieces, and also sent forth a terrible arrow, like another rod of Time.
प्रेषयामास समरे सोऽस्य काये न्यमञ्जत। अथान्यद्धनुरादाय सायकांश्च चतुर्दश
He dispatched it in battle, and it struck his body; then, taking up another bow and fourteen arrows,
द्रोणं द्रुपदपुत्रस्तु प्रतिविव्याध संयुगे । तावन्योन्यं सुसंक्रुद्धौ चक्रतुः शुभृशं रणम्
The son of Drupada struck Droṇa in the fight; both, greatly enraged, engaged in a fierce battle with each other.
सौमदत्तिं रणे शङ्खो रभसं रभसो युधि । प्रत्युद्ययौ महाराज तिष्ठतिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत्
In battle, O great king, Śaṅkha, impetuous in combat, advanced against Saumadatti, and called out, 'Stand, stand!'
तस्य वै दक्षिणं वीरो निर्बिभेद रणे भुजम् । समदत्तिस्तथा शङ्खं जत्रुदेशे समाहनत्
In that fight, the hero struck his right arm, and Saumadatti likewise struck Śaṅkha on the region of the collarbone.
तयोस्तदभवद्युद्धं घोररूपं विशांपते । दृप्तयोः समरे पूर्वं वृत्रवासवयोरिव
There arose between the two a dreadful battle, O lord of men, like that which once occurred between Vṛtra and Indra, both proud in combat.
बाह्लीकं तु रणे क्रुद्ध क्रुद्धरूपो विशांपते। अभ्यद्रवदमेयात्मा धृष्टकेतुर्महारथः
Then, O lord of men, the mighty car-warrior Dhṛṣṭaketu, of unfathomable spirit, rushed in wrath at Bāhlīka, who appeared furious in battle.
बाह्लीकस्तु रणे राजन्धृष्टकेतुममर्षणः । शरैर्बहुभिरानर्च्छत्सिंहनादमथानदत्
But Bāhlīka, O king, enraged in battle, assailed Dhṛṣṭaketu with many arrows, and then roared like a lion.
चेदिराजस्तु संक्रुद्धो बाह्लीकं नवभिः शरैः । विव्याध समरे तूर्णं मत्तो मत्तमिव द्विपम्
The king of the Cedis, enraged, swiftly pierced Bāhlīka in battle with nine arrows, as an intoxicated elephant attacks another intoxicated elephant.
तौ तत्र समरे क्रुद्धौ नर्दन्तौ च पुनः पुनः । समीयतुः सुसंक्रुद्धावङ्गारवबुधाविव
There, in that battle, the two, enraged and roaring again and again, closed in on each other, like two blazing coals.
राक्षसं रौद्रकर्माणं क्रूरकर्मा घटोत्कचः । अलम्बुसं प्रत्युदियाद्बलं शक्र इवाहवे
Ghaṭotkaca, performer of fierce deeds, rushed against the Rākṣasa Alambusa in battle, like Indra against his foe.
घटोत्कचस्ततः क्रुद्धो राक्षसं तं महाबलम् । नवत्या सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैर्दारयामास भारत
Then Ghaṭotkaca, enraged, pierced that mighty Rākṣasa with ninety sharp arrows, O descendant of Bharata.
अलम्बुसस्तु समरे भैमसेनिं महाबलम् । बहुधा दारयामास शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः
But Alambusa, in battle, pierced the mighty son of Bhīmasena in many ways with arrows having well-feathered shafts.
व्यभ्राजेतां ततस्तौ तु संयुगे शरविक्षतौ। यथा देवासुरे युद्धे बलशक्रौ महाबलौ
Then those two, wounded by arrows in the fight, shone forth as the mighty Indra and Bali did in the battle between gods and demons.
शिखण्डी समरे राजन्द्रौणिमभ्युद्ययौ बली । अश्वत्थामा ततः क्रुद्दः शिखण्डिनमुपस्थितम्
In battle, O king, the powerful Śikhaṇḍin advanced against Droṇa's son; then Aśvatthāman, enraged, confronted Śikhaṇḍin.
नाराचेन सुतीक्ष्णेन भृशं विद्ध्वा ह्यकम्पयत् । शिखण्ड्यपि ततो राजन्द्रोणपुत्रमताडयत्
Striking him hard with a very sharp iron arrow, he made him tremble; but then, O king, Śikhaṇḍin struck Droṇa's son in return.
सायकेन सुपीतेन तीक्ष्णेन निशितेन च। तौ जघ्नतुस्तदान्योन्यं शरैर्बहुविधैर्मृधे
With well-feathered, sharp, and keen arrows, they struck each other then with many kinds of shafts in battle.
भगदत्तं रणे शूरं विराटो वाहिनीपतिः। अभ्ययात्त्वरितो राजंस्ततो युद्धमवर्तत
Virata, the commander of the army, swiftly advanced against the valiant Bhagadatta in battle, O King, and then fighting ensued.
विराटो भगदत्तं तु शरवर्षण भारत। अभ्यवर्षत्सुसंक्रुद्धो मेघो वृष्ट्या इवाचलम्
In great anger, Virata showered Bhagadatta with a rain of arrows, O Bharata, like a cloud pouring rain upon a mountain.
भगदत्तस्ततस्तूर्णं विराटं पृथिवीपतिम् । छादयामास समरे मेघः सूर्यमिवोदितम्
Then Bhagadatta quickly covered King Virata in battle, like a cloud covering the risen sun.
बृहत्क्षत्रं तु कैकेयं कृपः शारद्वतो ययौ । तं कृपः शरवर्षेण च्छादयामास भारत
Kṛpa, son of Śaradvat, advanced against Bṛhatkṣatra of the Kaikeyas, and Kṛpa covered him with a shower of arrows, O Bharata.
गौतमं कैकयः क्रुद्धः शरवृष्ट्याऽभ्यपूरयत् । तावन्योन्यं हयान्हत्वा धनुश्छित्वा च भारत
The enraged Kaikeya filled Gautama with a torrent of arrows; and the two, having slain each other's horses and broken their bows, O Bharata—
विरथावसियुद्धाय समीयतुरमर्षणौ । तयोस्तदभवद्युद्धं घोररूपं सुदारुणम्
Both, deprived of their chariots, approached each other for a duel with swords, their battle then became fierce and terrible.
द्रुपदस्तु ततो राजन्सैन्धवं वै जयद्रथम् । अभ्युद्ययौ हृष्टरूपो हृष्टरूपं परंतपः
Then Drupada, O King, the scorcher of foes, joyfully advanced against Jayadratha, the Sindhu king, who was also delighted.
ततः सैन्धवको राजा द्रुपदं विशिखैस्त्रिभिः । ताजयामास समरे स च तं प्रत्यबिध्यत
Thereupon, the Sindhu king struck Drupada in battle with three sharp arrows, and Drupada struck him back.
तयोस्तदभवद्युद्धं घोररूपं सुदारुणम् । ईक्षणप्रीतिजननं शुक्राङ्गरकयोरिव
Their battle became fierce and dreadful, pleasing to the eyes of the onlookers, like the conjunction of Venus and Mars.
विकर्णस्तु सुतस्तुभ्यं सुतसोमं महाबलम् । अभ्ययाञ्जवनैरश्वैस्ततो युद्धमवर्तत
Vikarna, your son, advanced with swift horses against the mighty Sutasoma, and then battle was joined.
विकर्णः सुतसोमं तु विद्ध्वा नाकम्पयच्छरैः । सुतसोमो विकर्णं च तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Vikarna struck Sutasoma with arrows, but he did not waver; likewise, Sutasoma struck Vikarna, and it was wondrous to behold.
