Striving yogis see Him dwelling in themselves; but those of unrefined self, though striving, do not see Him, their minds being unsteady.
That radiance which, abiding in the sun, illumines the whole world, and that which is in the moon and in fire—know that radiance to be Mine.
Entering the earth, I sustain all beings by My energy; and becoming the moon, I nourish all plants with sap.
Becoming the fire of digestion, I dwell in the bodies of living beings; united with the inward and outward breaths, I digest the four kinds of food.
I dwell in the heart of all beings; from me arise memory, knowledge, and the loss thereof. I alone am to be known through all the Vedas; I am the author of the Vedānta and the knower of the Vedas.
In this world, there are two kinds of beings: the perishable and the imperishable. All creatures are perishable; the unchanging is called imperishable.
But there is another, the highest person, called the Supreme Self, who, entering the three worlds, sustains them as the imperishable Lord.
Because I transcend the perishable and am even higher than the imperishable, I am proclaimed in the world and in the Vedas as the Supreme Person.
Whoever, free from delusion, knows me as the Supreme Person, that one, knowing all, worships me with all their being, O Bhārata.
Thus this most secret teaching has been declared by me, O sinless one. Knowing this, a person becomes wise and accomplished in all duties, O Bhārata.
Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfastness in knowledge and yoga, generosity, self-control, sacrifice, study of the scriptures, austerity, and honesty—
Nonviolence, truthfulness, absence of anger, renunciation, tranquility, absence of malice, compassion for beings, absence of greed, gentleness, modesty, and lack of fickleness—
Vigor, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, absence of envy, and lack of pride—these are the qualities of one born with divine endowments, O Bhārata.
Hypocrisy, arrogance, self-conceit, anger, harshness, and ignorance—these, O Pārtha, are the qualities of one born with demonic endowments.
Divine endowments lead to liberation; demonic ones are considered to bind. Do not grieve, O Pāṇḍava, for you are born with divine qualities.
In this world there are two types of created beings: the divine and the demonic. The divine has been described at length; now hear from me about the demonic, O Pārtha.
The demonic do not know the path of action or renunciation; in them there is no purity, no proper conduct, nor is there truth.
They say the world is without truth, without foundation, without a Lord, born of mutual union, with desire as its cause—what else?
Holding to this view, lost in themselves, of little understanding, engaging in cruel deeds, these enemies of the world arise for its destruction.
Clinging to insatiable desire, filled with hypocrisy, pride, and arrogance, deluded, they hold fast to false views and act with impure vows.
Bound by countless anxieties ending only with death, convinced that the enjoyment of desires is the highest aim, they are certain of this.
Tied by hundreds of cords of hope, devoted to desire and anger, they strive to accumulate wealth by unjust means for the sake of sensual enjoyment.
This has been gained by me today; I will obtain this desired thing. I have this, and more wealth will come to me again.
That enemy has been slain by me, and I will kill others as well. I am the lord, I am the enjoyer, I am accomplished, powerful, and happy.
I am wealthy and of noble birth; who else is equal to me? I will sacrifice, I will give, I will rejoice—thus are they deluded by ignorance.
Bewildered by many thoughts, enveloped in the net of delusion, attached to sensual pleasures, they fall into impure hell.
Self-conceited, stubborn, filled with pride of wealth and status, they perform sacrifices in name only, with hypocrisy and without proper method.
Relying on ego, strength, arrogance, desire, and anger, they hate Me in their own bodies and in others, being envious.
Those hateful, cruel, lowest among men, I hurl endlessly into evil births in demonic wombs, within the cycle of existence.
Entering demonic wombs, deluded birth after birth, without attaining Me, O son of Kunti, they go to the lowest state.
