प्रह्लादश्चास्मि दैत्यानां कालः कलयतामहम्। मृगाणां च मृगेन्द्रोऽहं वैनतेयश्च परिणाम्
Among the Daityas I am Prahlāda, among measurers I am Time; among beasts I am the lion, and among birds I am Garuḍa.
पवनः पवतामस्मि रामः शस्त्रभृतामहम् । झषाणां मकरश्चास्मि स्रोतसामस्मि जाह्नवी
Among purifiers I am the wind, among wielders of weapons I am Rāma; among fishes I am the makara, among rivers I am the Jāhnavī.
सर्गाणामादिरन्तश्च मध्यं चैवाहमर्जुन । अध्यात्मविद्या विद्यानां वादः प्रवदतामहम्
Of all creations, I am the beginning, the end, and also the middle, O Arjuna. Of all branches of knowledge, I am the knowledge of the self; among those who debate, I am the reasoning.
अक्षराणामकारोऽस्मि द्वन्द्वः सामासिकस्य च । अहमेवाक्षयः कालो धाताऽहं विश्वतोमुखः
Among letters, I am the letter A; among compound words, I am the dual. I alone am the inexhaustible time; I am the sustainer, facing all directions.
मृत्युः सर्वहरश्चाहमुद्भवश्च भविष्यताम्। कीर्तिः श्रीर्वाक्क नारीणां स्मृतिर्मेधा धृतिः क्षमा
I am death, the all-consuming, and also the origin of future beings. Among women, I am fame, prosperity, speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness, and patience.
बृहत्साम कतथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम्। मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः
Of the Sāma hymns, I am the Bṛhat-sāman; among meters, I am Gāyatrī. Of months, I am Mārgaśīrṣa; among seasons, I am the spring, the bringer of flowers.
द्यूतं छलयतामस्मि तेजस्तेजस्विनामहम्। जयोऽस्मि व्यवसायोऽस्मि सत्त्वं सत्त्ववतामहम्
Among those who deceive, I am gambling; among the radiant, I am the splendor. I am victory, I am resolve, I am the virtue of the virtuous.
वृष्णीनां वासुदेवोऽस्मि पाण्डवानां धनञ्जयः । मुनीनामप्यहं व्यासः कवीनामुशना कविः
Among the Vṛṣṇis, I am Vāsudeva; among the Pāṇḍavas, I am Dhanañjaya. Among sages, I am Vyāsa; among poets, I am Uśanas the seer.
दण्डो दमयतामस्मि नीतिरस्मि जिगीषताम् । मौनं चैवास्मि गुह्यानां ज्ञानं ज्ञानवतामहम्
Among those who discipline, I am punishment; among those who seek victory, I am policy. Of secrets, I am silence; among the wise, I am knowledge.
यच्चापि सर्वभूतानां बीजं तदहमर्जुन। न तदस्ति विना यत्स्यान्मया भूतं चराचरम्
And whatever is the seed of all beings, that, O Arjuna, am I. There is nothing, moving or unmoving, that can exist without Me.
नान्तोऽस्ति मम दिव्यानां विभूतीनां परंतप । एष तूद्देशतः प्रोक्तो विभूतेर्विस्तरो मया
There is no end to My divine manifestations, O scorcher of foes. What I have spoken to you is only a brief indication of the extent of My glories.
यद्यद्विभूतितत्सत्त्वं श्रीमदूर्जितमेव वा। तत्तदेवावगच्छ त्वं मम तेजोंशसंभवम्
Whatever being is glorious, prosperous, or powerful, know that to be born from but a fraction of My splendor.
अथवा बहुनैतेन किं ज्ञातेन तवार्जुन । विष्टभ्याहमिदं कृत्स्नमेकांशेन स्थितो जगत्
But what is the need for all this detailed knowledge, O Arjuna? With a single portion of Myself, I sustain this entire universe.
मदनुग्रहाय परमं गुह्यमध्यात्मसंज्ञितम्। यत्त्वयोक्तं वचस्तेन मोहोऽयं विगतो मम
Through Your grace, the supreme and secret teaching concerning the self that You have spoken has dispelled my delusion.
भवाप्ययौ हि भूतानां श्रुतौ विस्तरशो मया। त्वत्तः कमलपत्राक्ष माहात्म्यमपि चाव्ययम्
The origin and dissolution of beings have been heard by me in detail, and also Your imperishable greatness, O lotus-eyed One.
एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वमात्मानं परमेश्वर। द्रष्टुमिच्छामि ते रूपमैश्वरं पुरुषोत्तम
So it is, as You have declared Yourself, O Supreme Lord. Yet, O Best of Men, I desire to see Your divine form.
मन्यसे यदि तच्छक्यं मया द्रष्टुमिति प्रभो। योगेश्वर ततो मे त्वं दर्शयात्मानमव्ययम्
If, O Lord, You think it possible for me to see it, then, O Master of Yoga, reveal to me Your imperishable form.
पश्य मे पार्थ रूपाणि शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः । नानाविधानि दिव्यानि नानावर्णाकृतीनि च
Behold, O Pārtha, My forms by the hundreds and thousands, of various kinds, divine, and of many colors and shapes.
पश्यादित्यान्वसून्रुद्रानश्विनौ मरुतस्तथा। बहून्यदृष्टपूर्वाणि पश्याऽश्चर्याणि भारत
See the Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, the two Aśvins, and also the Maruts; behold many wonders never seen before, O Bhārata.
इहैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं पश्याद्य सचराचरम् । मम देहे गुडाकेश यच्चान्यद्द्रष्टुमिच्छसि
Here, gathered in My body, behold today the entire universe, both moving and unmoving, and whatever else you wish to see, O Guḍākeśa.
न तु मां शक्ष्यसे द्रष्टुमनेनैव स्वचक्षुषा । दिव्यं ददामि ते चक्षुः पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम्
But you are not able to see Me with your own eyes as they are; I grant you divine sight—behold My sovereign yoga.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजन्महायोगेश्वरो हरिः। दर्शयामास पार्थाय मरमं रूपमैश्वरम्
Having spoken thus, O King, the great Lord of yoga, Hari, then revealed to Partha His supreme, divine form.
अनेकवक्रनयनमनेकाद्भुतदर्शनम् । अनेकदिव्याभारणं दिव्यानेकोद्यतायुधम्
With many mouths and eyes, displaying many wondrous sights, adorned with many divine ornaments, and holding many uplifted divine weapons.
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरं दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनम् । सर्वाश्चर्यमयं देवमनन्तं विश्वतोमुखम्
Wearing divine garlands and garments, anointed with heavenly fragrances, all marvelous, godly, endless, and facing in every direction.
दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता । यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भासस्तस्य महात्मनः
If the radiance of a thousand suns were to rise at once in the sky, that might resemble the splendor of that great soul.
तत्रैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं प्रविभक्तमनेकधा । अपश्यद्देवदेवस्य शरीरे पाण्डवस्तदा
There, within the body of the God of gods, the son of Pandu then saw the entire universe gathered together, yet divided in many ways.
ततः स विस्मयाविष्टो हृष्टरोमा धऩञ्जयः । प्रणम्य शिरसा देवं कृताञ्जलिरभाषत
Then, overwhelmed with wonder, his hair standing on end, Dhananjaya bowed his head to the god, joined his palms, and spoke.
पश्यामि देवांस्तव देव देहे सर्वांस्तथा भूतविशेषसङ्घान् । ब्रह्माणमीशं कमलासनस्थ- मृषींश्च सर्वानुरगांश्च दिव्यान्
I see all the gods, O God, within Your body, and also all the hosts of beings; Brahma, the lord seated on the lotus, all the sages, and the divine serpents.
अनेकबाहूदरवक्रनेत्रं पश्यामि त्वां सर्वतोऽनन्तरूपम् । नान्तं न मध्यं न पुनस्तवादिं पश्यामि विश्वेश्वर विश्वरूप
I see You everywhere, with many arms, bellies, mouths, and eyes, of infinite form; I see no end, no middle, and no beginning in You, O Lord of the universe, O cosmic form.
किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रिणं च तेजोराशिं सर्वतो दीप्तिमन्तम् । पश्यामि त्वां दुर्निरीक्ष्यं समन्ता- द्दीप्तानलार्कद्युतिमप्रमेययम्
I see You crowned, wielding the mace and discus, a mass of radiance shining on all sides, hard to behold, blazing like burning fire and the sun, immeasurable in every direction.
