By Me, in My unmanifest form, this entire world is pervaded; all beings exist in Me, but I do not dwell in them.
And yet, beings do not exist in Me—behold My divine yoga! Sustaining beings, My Self is not situated in them, and I am the origin of beings.
As the mighty wind, always moving everywhere, abides in space, so understand that all beings abide in Me.
All beings, O Kaunteya, enter My nature at the end of a cycle; again, at the beginning of a cycle, I send them forth.
Holding My own nature, I send forth again and again this entire multitude of beings, helpless, under the control of nature.
But these actions do not bind Me, O Dhananjaya, for I remain detached from those actions, as one indifferent and unattached.
Under My supervision, nature brings forth the moving and the unmoving; by this cause, O Kaunteya, the world revolves.
Fools disregard Me, having assumed a human form, not knowing My higher nature as the great Lord of beings.
Their hopes are in vain, their actions are in vain, their knowledge is in vain, those of confused minds who have embraced the deluding, demonic, and rakshasa nature.
But the great-souled ones, O Partha, taking refuge in the divine nature, worship me with undistracted minds, knowing me as the imperishable origin of beings.
Always singing my praises, striving with firm resolve, bowing to me in devotion, they constantly worship me, ever steadfast.
Others too, performing the sacrifice of knowledge, worship me; some as one, others as many, in various ways, seeing me everywhere.
I am the ritual, I am the sacrifice, I am the offering to the ancestors, I am the medicinal herb, I am the mantra, I am the clarified butter, I am the fire, I am the oblation.
I am the father of this world, the mother, the sustainer, the grandsire; I am the object to be known, the purifier, the syllable Om, and also the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas.
I am the goal, the supporter, the lord, the witness, the abode, the refuge, the friend; I am the origin, the dissolution, the foundation, the treasure, the imperishable seed.
I give heat, I withhold and send forth the rain; I am immortality and also death, being and non-being, O Arjuna.
Those who know the three Vedas, purified from sin by drinking Soma, seek heaven by worshipping me with sacrifices; attaining the world of Indra, they enjoy the divine pleasures of the gods in heaven.
Having enjoyed that vast world of heaven, when their merit is exhausted, they enter the mortal world again; thus, following the path of the three Vedas, desiring desires, they come and go.
But those people who, thinking of me alone, worship me with exclusive devotion, to them, who are ever steadfast, I provide what they lack and protect what they have.
Even those who, devoted to other deities, worship them with faith, O son of Kunti, they too worship me, though not according to the proper method.
For I am indeed the enjoyer and lord of all sacrifices; but they do not know me in truth, therefore they fall.
Those devoted to the gods go to the gods; those devoted to the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship spirits go to the spirits; those who worship me come to me.
Whoever offers me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water, I accept that offering, given with a pure heart.
Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give, whatever austerity you perform, O son of Kunti, do that as an offering to me.
Thus you shall be freed from the bonds of action, with their good and evil results; your mind joined to the yoga of renunciation, liberated, you shall come to me.
I am the same toward all beings; to me there is none hateful or dear. But those who worship me with devotion are in me, and I am also in them.
Even if someone of very bad conduct worships me with undivided devotion, he must be regarded as righteous, for he is rightly resolved.
Quickly he becomes a person of virtue and attains lasting peace; know for certain, O son of Kunti, that my devotee never perishes.
For even those who are born from sinful origins—women, merchants, and laborers—if they take refuge in me, they too attain the highest goal.
How much more, then, the righteous Brahmins and devoted royal sages! Having come to this impermanent and unhappy world, devote yourself to me.
